Yes. Multiple AI agents can control the same smart-home devices when each has an authenticated connection to a shared hub or when compatible smart-home platforms share devices through Matter. Access is not automatic: you must configure the connection, grant appropriate permissions, and check that the device and hubs support the features you need.
Choose how the agents will share access
There are two different setups to consider. If your agents can all connect to one Home Assistant instance, you can expose its LLM API to compatible clients. If you want separate smart-home platforms to control the same Matter device, use Matter multi-admin. These approaches solve related problems but are not interchangeable: one shares access to a hub, while the other adds platform controllers to a device.

| Approach | What is shared | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant LLM API and MCP | Access to selected Home Assistant capabilities through a shared instance | A configured client connection, authentication, and suitable permissions. Home Assistant’s LLM documentation describes the available APIs. |
| Matter multi-admin (also called multi-fabric) | A Matter device is joined to more than one compatible platform controller | A compatible Matter hub for each platform that will control the device, plus the platform’s device-sharing setup. See Google’s Matter setup guidance and Home Assistant’s Matter guide. |
Connect multiple AI clients through Home Assistant
Home Assistant can expose an API that lets an LLM fetch information or control Home Assistant. Its built-in Assist API is limited to the intents and entities available to the built-in conversation agent, and it cannot perform administrative tasks. Integrations can also add tools to an LLM API.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Home Assistant’s MCP server exposes a selected LLM API at /api/mcp; a particular API can be addressed at /api/mcp/<api_id>, including /api/mcp/assist. Clients need an authentication token. Home Assistant documents OAuth and long-lived access tokens as options depending on client support. For APIs other than Assist, the authenticated user must be an administrator, so do not assume every client can connect with identical or restricted permissions.

In practice, configure and authenticate each client that needs access. Then select the API and expose only the entities and capabilities appropriate to that agent. The endpoint and authentication model are documented in Home Assistant’s LLM API guide.
Share a Matter device across platforms
Matter multi-admin lets a compatible device be controlled by more than one certified smart-home platform. Home Assistant describes this as multi-fabric: the same device joins multiple controllers. Google gives Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa as examples of platforms that can use Matter devices across apps.

- Check compatibility first. Confirm that the device supports Matter and that each platform you want to use has a compatible Matter hub. Google notes that each participating Matter-enabled app needs its own compatible hub; Thread devices may also require suitable Thread support. Check the current requirements for the particular device and platform in Google’s setup guide.
- Start sharing from a platform where the device is already set up. Use that platform’s Matter device-sharing flow to make the device available to another controller.
- Complete setup in the second platform. Follow its prompts to add the shared device. Once setup is complete, both platforms can control it, subject to their feature support and permissions.
Home Assistant documents joining devices already set up in Google Home or Apple Home, as well as sharing a Home Assistant Matter device with another platform, in its Matter guide.
Set permissions according to what each agent should do
Sharing a connection is not the same as giving every agent unrestricted control. Home Assistant permissions are assigned through groups, and a user’s group policies combine; the owner always has access to everything. Entity permissions can be scoped by entity, device, area, or domain, with distinctions between reading, controlling, and editing. Its permissions documentation explains these controls.

- Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
For a deployment with agents that need different abilities, use separate accounts or policies where your client and Home Assistant setup support them. Do not assume that an external LLM client automatically maps to a distinct Home Assistant user or that its permissions are isolated just because it is a different agent. For MCP, authentication is required, and non-Assist APIs require an administrator account.

Feature completeness can differ
Matter may expose basic controls without exposing every feature available through a product’s native integration. Home Assistant gives Hue as an example: Matter provides basic light control, while the native integration can expose additional scenes and entertainment functionality. Bridges also differ in which device classes and features they expose; support for one device in an ecosystem does not guarantee support for every device in it. See Home Assistant’s Matter documentation.

Local and remote commands follow different paths
Google says Matter commands issued at home are carried over Wi-Fi or Thread locally. When a command is issued from away, the cloud reaches the home hub, which then communicates locally with the device. This describes the platform’s command path; it is not a general guarantee about what data an AI agent or its service processes.

Use the setup that fits your goal
- Several AI clients, one hub: configure their authenticated access to the appropriate Home Assistant LLM API.
- Separate platforms controlling one device: use Matter multi-admin if the device and every platform are compatible.
- Need advanced product-specific features: check whether the native integration offers controls that Matter does not.
- Buying a hub: verify the current supported hub list for each platform and the requirements of the device, especially if it uses Thread.
Compatibility lists and platform features can change, so confirm current requirements in the relevant platform documentation before setup.
