The right amount depends on the tools and projects you run together—not simply whether you call yourself a software or game developer. Vendor figures below are requirements and recommendations, not controlled comparisons across every project and computer.
RAM recommendations by development workload
| Workload | Vendor guidance | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Typical professional Visual Studio solution | Microsoft recommends 16GB; 4GB is the listed minimum. | Use 16GB as a practical starting point rather than treating the minimum as a comfort target. |
| Unity 6.3 Editor | Unity’s official search-result excerpt recommends at least 8GB to run the editor. | This is an editor baseline, not a guarantee for large projects or a full toolchain. |
| Android Studio without an emulator | Google lists 8GB minimum for Android Studio. | Larger projects may need more RAM and CPU resources. |
| Android Studio with an emulator | Google lists 16GB minimum for Studio and Emulator, and recommends 32GB. | For routine IDE-plus-emulator use, 32GB gives more headroom than the minimum. |
| Unreal Engine 5 development | Epic recommends 32GB. | A sensible target for UE5 development workflows, not a guarantee for every project or asset load. |
| Visual Studio 2026 “works best” configuration | Microsoft says 64GB works best, alongside a 16-core-or-better CPU. | This is best-performance guidance, not the IDE’s minimum requirement. |
For a mixed workload that includes ordinary software development and game development, 32GB is the best-supported general target: Google recommends it for Android Studio, including emulator-oriented use, and Epic recommends it for UE5. That is a synthesis of vendor recommendations, not a universal requirement. The detailed figures come from Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 requirements, Google’s Android Studio requirements, Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation, and Unity’s Unity 6.3 system requirements.
Why development work can use more RAM than the IDE alone
Software projects and multitasking
A coding workload may include the IDE, browsers, local services, test tools, build processes, and virtual devices at the same time. The job title does not determine the memory requirement; the size of the project and the combination of tools running together matter. Microsoft’s 16GB recommendation is for typical professional Visual Studio solutions, while its 64GB “works best” guidance is a higher-performance configuration rather than a baseline.
Android Studio and emulators
Google separates Android Studio alone from Studio running with an emulator: its listed minimum rises from 8GB to 16GB, and its recommendation is 32GB. Google also says to allow about 4GB of memory for each concurrently running Android Virtual Device (AVD). Multiple virtual devices can therefore change the amount of headroom you need.

- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Do not confuse IDE heap with total system RAM. Google says Android Studio’s default maximum heap is 1280MB; increasing it may help with large projects or systems with more memory, but assigning too much can degrade performance. See Google’s Android Studio configuration guidance before changing the setting.
Game engines and local builds
Epic lists 32GB RAM as recommended for Unreal Engine 5.8 and describes its hardware guidance as a reasonable guideline for game development with UE5. RAM is only one part of that setup: the same guidance discusses processor and GPU memory requirements, and says a machine with at least 12–16 CPU cores is a practical baseline for local compilation when you are not using a distributed build solution. See Epic’s Unreal Engine hardware and software specifications.

Unity’s official Unity 6.3 search-result excerpt recommends at least 8GB to run the Editor on Windows, macOS, or Linux. That establishes an editor baseline only; it does not establish an ideal amount for a large project or for running other development tools alongside it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a capacity that fits your work
- Choose 16GB if your work is mainly lighter coding or typical Visual Studio solutions, and you do not regularly run emulators or demanding game-engine workflows alongside other tools.
- Choose 32GB if you use Unreal Engine 5, Android Studio with an emulator, or a mix of development tools that compete for memory. It is also the more flexible target for a computer expected to handle both software and game development.
- Consider more than 32GB only when your projects and simultaneous workloads justify it. Microsoft’s 64GB figure is specifically its “works best” guidance for Visual Studio 2026, not a general requirement for developers.
Before buying an upgrade, check the computer’s documentation for supported memory generation, maximum capacity, module format, and available slots. A 32GB total-system target does not mean every 32GB kit will fit every laptop or desktop.
