Running PC Games on Android: Local Streaming vs. Cloud Gaming

Local streaming runs PC games on your own computer; cloud gaming runs supported titles on provider servers. Compare the requirements, performance factors, costs and best fit for your Android setup.

You can play PC games on an Android phone or tablet without installing the PC version on Android itself. With local streaming, your own PC runs the game and sends its picture and sound to your device. With cloud gaming, a service runs supported games on remote servers. The right choice depends on whether you have a gaming PC, which games you want to play, and how good your connection is.

Local streaming and cloud gaming are different

Both approaches stream video to Android and send your input back over a network, but the game runs in a different place.

  • Local PC streaming: your PC renders and runs the game. Your Android device acts as a display and input client. Steam Link and Moonlight are apps for this arrangement, not cloud gaming services. Valve explains that Remote Play sends video and audio from the gaming PC while returning input to it (Steam Remote Play).
  • Cloud gaming: a provider’s servers run supported games and stream the result to Android. You do not need to own a gaming PC, but you do need service access, a supported game, and a suitable connection.

Streaming does not make an Android phone run a demanding PC game natively. In either case, the phone receives a video stream; the host PC or cloud server does the game rendering.

Three ways to play PC games on Android

Steam Link: stream from a PC running Steam

Steam Link connects an Android device to a computer running Steam. Valve says the Android app supports many phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer. Its setup begins with Steam open and signed in on the host PC; then connect the phone to the same network and follow the app’s pairing prompts. Valve lists a 5 GHz wireless router among the equipment to use. See Valve’s Steam Link Android support page.

GameSir X5 Lite Mobile Gaming Controller for Android,Hall Effect Joystick
  • WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
  • MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
  • HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.

Steam Link is a natural option if your games are in Steam and you want to stream at home. The host PC still needs to be able to run the game, and it must be available during play. The app is free, but the PC and its power use are not accounted for by that fact.

Moonlight with Sunshine: stream from a PC, including games from other stores

Moonlight is an Android client for streaming games, programs, or the desktop from a PC over a local network or the internet. Its Google Play listing supports NVIDIA GeForce Experience host software on NVIDIA GPUs or Sunshine, which the listing describes as supporting all GPUs. It says games from any store can be streamed when they run on the host PC. The listing describes Moonlight as free and open source (Moonlight on Google Play).

For a Sunshine setup, install Sunshine on the PC, secure its configuration interface, then pair the client by entering the PIN it displays. The Moonlight setup guide recommends first testing on the same home network and also documents remote-access setup. It notes that installation may require a PC reboot and that additional apps can be added to Sunshine.

Moonlight advertises support up to 4K/120 FPS HDR under suitable configurations. That is a capability ceiling, not a guarantee for a particular phone, PC, game, network, or codec. Its listing says HDR depends on an HDR10-capable client, host encoding support, an HDR-enabled game, and in some cases an HDR display connected to the host.

GeForce NOW: play supported games from provider servers

GeForce NOW runs supported games on NVIDIA’s infrastructure and supports Android. You connect a supported game store and play eligible titles; the game itself runs remotely. NVIDIA’s FAQ says paid games must be owned or purchased from a supported store, while supported free-to-play games are also available. Listed connected stores include Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, and GOG. Supported games can synchronize cloud saves. Check the GeForce NOW FAQ for catalog, account, and regional availability details; NVIDIA says it offers the service directly in North America, Europe, Japan, and India, with Alliance partners serving other regions.

GeForce NOW has Free, Performance, and Ultimate membership options and day passes, but current prices and availability vary. Check the membership page for your region rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere (GeForce NOW memberships).

What you need: PC, games, accounts, and connection

Factor Steam Link or Moonlight GeForce NOW
Where the game runs Your PC Provider infrastructure
Hardware requirement A PC capable of running the selected game, with Steam for Steam Link or supported host software such as Sunshine for Moonlight A compatible Android device and access to the service; no gaming PC required
Game access Games the PC can run; Steam Link is built around a computer running Steam, while Moonlight says it can stream games from any store that runs on the PC Supported games linked through supported stores, plus supported free-to-play titles
Network path Between the PC and Android; remote play also depends on the internet route and host upload connection Between Android and the provider’s data center
App cost in cited sources Steam Link and Moonlight are listed as free Free and paid access types are available; check current regional terms

These requirements make the ownership question important: local streaming cannot help if you do not have a PC that can run the game. Conversely, a cloud service does not mean every PC game you own is available to play; the title must be supported by the service and its store integration.

Performance: the network and the game both matter

There is no universal latency winner. On a home network, local streaming avoids the route to a distant cloud data center, but it still has capture and encoding on the PC, wireless or wired network transport, decoding on Android, display delay, and the return path for input. The PC must also render the game well enough. Remote streaming from your own PC adds internet routing and depends on the host connection’s upload capacity.

Cloud gaming removes the need for your own gaming PC but depends on the path from your location to the provider’s data center, as well as service settings and network stability. NVIDIA’s Android requirements list these targets and conditions (GeForce NOW system requirements):

NVIDIA-listed Android streaming mode Bandwidth target
HD up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps
FHD at 60 FPS 25 Mbps
QHD at 120 FPS 35 Mbps

NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and specifies latency under 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. These are provider requirements and recommendations, not a promise of a particular image quality or response time. NVIDIA also says 1440p/120 FPS on Android requires an Ultimate membership.

Moonlight likewise says results vary with the client device and network setup, and recommends strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi to Android and preferably Ethernet between the PC and router. None of these vendor figures is an independent, controlled comparison of real-world Android latency or image quality. Test the actual phone, game, location, and network you plan to use.

Cost: compare your situation, not just the app price

If you already own a capable gaming PC and mostly play at home, local streaming may add little beyond optional accessories and electricity; the PC’s purchase cost is already incurred. That is a conditional way to think about your costs, not a published total-cost finding. If you do not own a gaming PC, cloud gaming can avoid buying one, but access may involve a membership or day pass, and paid games may still need to be purchased.

For a fair comparison, choose a time horizon and include the costs that apply to you:

  • For local streaming: the PC purchase or upkeep if you need one, electricity, any controller or phone clip, and home-network equipment.
  • For cloud gaming: the current regional service price over the same period, any game purchases, and any optional controller or clip.

The cited services do not provide a complete cost-of-ownership comparison, and an individual’s hardware, electricity, accessories, and local plan price are not established here. Check your regional plan price before comparing totals.

Which option fits your situation?

  • You already own a PC that runs the game and usually play at home: start with Steam Link for a Steam-focused setup, or Moonlight if you want a broader host-PC and storefront approach.
  • You do not own a gaming PC: try GeForce NOW if the games you want are supported in your region and through your connected stores.
  • You want to play away from home: either approach can work, but local streaming requires your PC to remain available and your remote network setup to function. Cloud gaming requires a good connection to the service where you are.
  • Your internet connection is unreliable: local streaming on a strong home network may avoid dependence on the internet route to a data center, but it still needs a capable host and stable local Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • You want the highest possible stream settings: compare the actual device, game, host or membership tier, and network. A feature ceiling such as Moonlight’s advertised 4K/120 FPS HDR is not a prediction of what your setup will sustain.

Controller and phone setup

Touch controls may work for some games, but many PC titles are easier to play with a controller. Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or later, and Razer Kishi/Raiju Mobile among supported Steam Link controllers; its support page says other input devices may work without official support (Steam Link Android controller information). NVIDIA lists supported controller families and recommends a gamepad clip to attach a controller to a phone. Check compatibility with your Android device and chosen app before buying an accessory.

A practical first-test checklist

  1. Confirm the game path. For local streaming, check that the host PC runs the game and that Steam Link or Moonlight suits its store and host software. For GeForce NOW, confirm that the title and store are supported in your region.
  2. Test at home first. With local streaming, put the PC and Android device on the same network for the first connection. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone where possible; Ethernet from PC to router can help stabilize the host link.
  3. Check the phone and controller. Verify Android version and controller compatibility for your selected app or service.
  4. Try the intended game and location. Play from the room or network where you expect to use it, then assess responsiveness, image stability, and whether the controls suit the game.
  5. For remote local play, configure access deliberately. Follow the current Moonlight/Sunshine guide for internet setup and verify that the host remains available and its upload connection is adequate.
