You can install the Brave Android browser from Brave’s official F-Droid-compatible repository, then use the F-Droid client to check for updates. Brave Origin is different: Brave describes it as an upgrade within the existing Android Brave app, not as a separate F-Droid app. Install the browser first; activate Origin inside Brave if that is what you mean.
What you can install from F-Droid
Brave announced its F-Droid-compatible Android browser repository on June 27, 2025. Brave’s release repository currently serves one app, the Brave browser. Brave says its F-Droid and Google Play builds come from the same source code; that does not establish that every build is byte-for-byte identical. Brave’s announcement explains the distribution, and the official release repository provides its repository address.

Brave’s Origin page describes Android Origin as an upgrade to the existing Brave app (Android 1.91 and above), rather than a separate standalone Android download. In other words, first install Brave; Origin activation is a separate in-app flow.

- Install the F-Droid client. Follow F-Droid’s official installation instructions. F-Droid recommends installing its APK for most users. Android may ask you to allow the app opening the APK to install unknown apps, and later ask you to allow F-Droid to install apps. On first launch, F-Droid downloads repository data; its documentation says this can take 2 to 10 minutes depending on connection speed.
- Add Brave’s official release repository. In the F-Droid client, add this repository: https://brave-browser-apk-release.s3.brave.com/fdroid/repo. Brave’s repository page also provides a QR code. F-Droid’s current documentation does not establish a screen-by-screen label sequence, so the precise menu wording may vary by client version.
- Check the repository fingerprint. Compare the release repository’s SHA-256 fingerprint with Brave’s published release fingerprint:
3C 60 DE 13 5A A1 9E C9 49 E9 98 46 9C 90 8F 71 71 88 5C 1E 28 05 F3 9E B4 03 DD B0 F3 7B 4B D2. Brave also lists separate beta and nightly fingerprints; do not use either of those to verify the release repository. See Brave’s signing-key page. - Install Brave from the repository. Find Brave in F-Droid after its repository index has loaded, then choose install and approve Android’s prompt if one appears. Use Brave’s repository rather than an unrelated source if you want this installation path.
Check whether Brave has an update
Use the F-Droid client’s updates feature or its update notifications, then check whether it offers an update for the installed Brave app. F-Droid says its client tracks available updates, can notify you, and can optionally install updates automatically. It also checks repository index signatures and APK hashes. For the available update state, the client is the practical place to look; a directly downloaded APK is not tracked by F-Droid and does not provide its update notifications. See F-Droid’s client information and update guidance.

- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
If no update notification appears
No notification does not necessarily mean that no newer build exists. F-Droid explains that a newer version can appear in an app’s versions list without an update notification if it is not the repository’s recommended version; test or beta builds may be newer than the recommended one. Its general guidance also notes that third-party repository maintainers may not update metadata. This describes F-Droid’s client behavior generally, not Brave’s current release cadence. Check the app’s version list in F-Droid if you need to understand what versions are available, and distinguish a recommended stable update from a newer test build. F-Droid’s update documentation describes this distinction.
F-Droid client versus direct APK
| Route | Update tracking and alerts | Integrity information | What you manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| F-Droid client with Brave’s repository | The client tracks available updates and can notify you; automatic installation is optional. | F-Droid checks repository index signatures and APK hashes. Verify the repository identity against Brave’s release fingerprint. | Use the client’s update feature and interpret recommended-version status. |
| Directly downloaded APK | F-Droid does not provide update notifications for a directly downloaded APK. | The F-Droid client’s repository and APK checks do not apply to an APK installed outside that client. | You must find and install updates yourself through the APK source. |
F-Droid recommends using its client; the table describes the distinction in F-Droid’s own update guidance, not a recommendation to use an unofficial APK mirror. F-Droid update guidance.

Activate Brave Origin on Android
If you mean Origin rather than the browser package, open Brave’s mobile settings and follow the current Origin instructions: go to All Settings > General > Origin. Brave’s flow may route a purchase to the Play Store; if you have already purchased Origin, use the verification option. Restart Brave after activation. These are steps for enabling Origin in Brave, not for installing a separate Origin app from F-Droid. See Brave’s Origin availability and activation information.
