Firefox Split View displays two tabs side by side inside one browser window. Use it when you want to compare or refer to two pages together; use separate windows when you prefer independent window management or need to arrange more than two pages.
What Firefox Split View does
Split View places two open tabs in left and right panes within the same Firefox window. You can keep both pages visible together and adjust the space each pane uses. Mozilla describes it as useful for tasks such as checking a calendar while booking, comparing options, reading while taking notes, or copying details between web pages. These are Mozilla’s examples, not reported usability-test results. Mozilla’s feature announcement says the feature began rolling out to all Firefox users with Firefox 149 on March 24, 2026; the announcement was published March 23, 2026.
How Split View differs from two Firefox windows

The practical distinction is grouping: Split View keeps a two-page task together in Firefox; separate windows leave each page in its own window. The more-than-two-pages guidance follows from Mozilla’s documented two-tab limit for each split.
How to open tabs in Split View
Start from one tab
- Right-click a tab, or Control-click on Mac, and choose Add Split View.
- The selected tab appears on the left. Choose another open tab for the other pane, or select the right pane and enter a website address.
Choose two tabs
- Select two tabs in the tab bar.
- Right-click or Control-click the selection and choose Open in Split View. If the tabs are far apart in the tab bar, Firefox creates the split next to the active tab.
Use the keyboard selection method
With one tab active, hold Alt on Windows or Linux, or Option on Mac, and click another tab in the same window. Firefox opens the two tabs together in Split View.

Adjust or end a split
- Resize: Drag the vertical divider to change the width of either pane.
- Reverse the pages: Use the Split View controls to swap which tab appears on each side.
- Separate the tabs: Use the controls to end the pairing while leaving both tabs open.
- Close the pair: Choose the control to close both tabs. Closing either tab also dissolves the split.
Limits and restoring Split View
- Each Split View contains two tabs, though Mozilla says you can create an unlimited number of separate split views.
- Pinned tabs cannot currently be added to a Split View.
- Find in Page searches only the active pane.
- If Open previous windows and tabs is enabled, Firefox restores splits with their window. It also restores them when you reopen a recently closed window.
- Reopening a closed tab with Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac, does not restore a Split View.
- If the active tab is in a tab group, the split is created within that group. If the two selected tabs are in different groups, the split is created within the active tab’s group.
