A mismatch, unexplained charge, or delayed withdrawal deserves investigation, but one problem alone does not prove fraud. What matters is whether the firm gives a clear, verifiable explanation and resolves the issue.
What are the main red flags in an investment account?
Compare each account statement and trade confirmation with your own records. FINRA advises investors to question unexpected cash changes, missing securities, unfamiliar trades, unexplained charges, and transfers or withdrawals they did not authorize. SIPC’s instruction, quoted in FINRA’s December 19, 2019 guidance, is: “If you ever discover an error in a trade confirmation or brokerage statement, you should immediately bring the error to the attention of the brokerage firm in writing.”

Reconcile the account activity
As a practical check—not a universal regulator-prescribed formula—start with the opening balance, add deposits and transfers in, subtract withdrawals and fees, then account for investment activity to see whether it explains the closing balance. Check dates, holdings, quantities, prices, cash movements, and charges. Ask the firm in writing to explain or correct any discrepancy.
Check what a performance figure actually means
A dashboard number may not tell you what happened to your money. Ask what dates the figure covers, whether it is a dollar gain or a rate of return, how deposits and withdrawals are treated, whether fees are deducted, and whether unrealized gains appear alongside realized results. There is no single performance-display standard established here for every platform and jurisdiction, so verify the calculation rather than assuming two platforms report returns the same way.

What fees should a broker or investment platform explain?
Ask for the complete fee schedule, including charges to open, maintain, and close the account. For a defined period—such as the past month, quarter, or year—request the total commissions and transaction costs, and ask what return would have been needed to cover them. The SEC notes that statements, confirmations, and online accounts may not show every fee.
Look at trading activity as well as account value
Frequent buying and selling that does not fit your stated goals or risk tolerance, unauthorized trading, and excessive charges are warning signs identified by the SEC. An account can increase in value while trading costs or unnecessary activity remain a concern. Ask the firm to explain why the trades fit your goals and risk tolerance, and how the person recommending or placing them is compensated. The SEC’s investor guidance notes that compensation can depend on the amount invested or number of transactions, and may be higher for a firm’s own products.

Why can’t I withdraw money from my investment account?
A delayed or blocked withdrawal is a reason to check the account and preserve evidence, not by itself proof of fraud. Review the account terms and the stated withdrawal method and timing. Find out whether the request is pending, rejected, or awaiting identity verification. There is no universal normal withdrawal time established across firms and jurisdictions.
Contact the firm using contact details you independently verify through its official regulator record—not details in an unexpected message. Keep the request confirmation and dated replies. An unexpected transfer or withdrawal should be questioned promptly.

When service behavior becomes a pattern
Escalate concern if messages go unanswered, explanations conflict, staff offer reassurance without correcting the account, promised fixes never arrive, or someone asks you to settle the matter privately through a personal email or other off-the-books channel. FINRA recommends keeping dated notes, names, and copies of communications.
How do I know if an investment platform is legitimate?
Before depositing, verify the firm’s legal name, website domain, regulator, and permission to provide the particular service you intend to use. Registration is not a guarantee of good performance, protection from losses, or suitability of every product. A firm may face different rules depending on its services and where you live, so use the regulator for your jurisdiction.

- United States: The SEC points investors to FINRA BrokerCheck for brokers and IAPD for investment advisers. The SEC also warns that it does not approve or endorse particular securities, firms, services, or individuals; claims of SEC endorsement are a red flag.
- United Kingdom: The FCA directs consumers to its Firm Checker to verify both authorization and permission for the service. Its September 26, 2025 statement cautions: “If something looks too good to be true, it usually is.”
- Other countries: Use the relevant local regulator’s official register and contact details. The SEC Nigeria’s January 30, 2026 notice about ModMount Services Limited is a dated, Nigeria-specific example: it reported withdrawal difficulties and aggressive solicitation, stated that the entity was not registered or licensed to operate in Nigeria’s capital market, and advised investors to verify registration. It is not a universal status check or evidence about other platforms.
Understand what protections do—and do not—cover
Protections depend on the country, firm, service, account, and eligibility rules. In the United States, SIPC provides limited customer protection if a brokerage firm becomes insolvent; it does not insure losses from falling market prices. The FCA says that dealing with an unregulated firm can leave fewer complaint and compensation routes, including likely loss of access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme in the situations it describes. Check the rules that apply to your own account rather than treating registration or compensation coverage as a promise that an investment is safe.

- Pause additional payments while you check. This is especially important if an unsolicited offer, social-media promotion, or request to deposit more accompanies the problem.
- Save the evidence. Download statements and confirmations; keep withdrawal records, dated messages, names, and notes about calls.
- Write to the firm through a verified channel. Identify the specific transaction, balance, fee, or withdrawal at issue and ask for an explanation or correction in writing.
- Escalate unresolved complaints. Contact the appropriate local regulator or relevant dispute-resolution route. The SEC advises written complaints to a firm and to the SEC or FINRA for suspected excessive trading or other broker problems; FINRA recommends contacting the firm first and escalating if it does not resolve the matter.
- Do not pay a recovery fee to a stranger. The FCA warns that people who have already lost money may be targeted with follow-up offers to recover it in exchange for a fee.
The FCA describes online trading scams promoted with fake celebrity endorsements, glossy websites, and social media. In reported patterns, investors may initially see returns and then be urged to deposit more or recruit others; later, returns stop, access is suspended, and the firm becomes unresponsive. These are warning patterns, not proof that any one symptom establishes fraud.
