Use ChatGPT to preview eligible clothing from its shopping results—or ask it to visualize an item whose image you upload. Use a retailer’s fitting-room feature when it is available on the product you are considering and you want to preview that item alongside its product information. Neither kind of image can tell you reliably what size to buy: check the garment’s size guide, fit notes and return policy before ordering.
What each kind of virtual try-on does
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page describes a “Try on” button on eligible clothing and accessory listings. Select it, then take or upload a selfie to view a generated preview. You can also upload an image of clothing or an accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. Try-on images can be saved in the ChatGPT Library; reference photos can be managed under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. OpenAI’s instructions for Shopping with ChatGPT Search explain the feature and its limitations.

Retailer apps
A retailer’s feature is accessed from supported products in its app, and the available inputs depend on the retailer and item. ASOS describes a choice between uploading a personal photo and selecting a virtual model. Its customer-care page says the feature is being tested with selected users on the iOS app and is available on a limited set of products. ASOS announced an initial launch with AIUTA on February 17, 2026, covering around 10,000 products; that was a launch figure, not a verified current catalog count. ASOS customer-care details describe the current test, while ASOS’s launch announcement gives the initial rollout context.
Walmart describes a “try on room” on eligible apparel pages in its iOS app. Depending on the item and options shown, shoppers may be able to upload a photo, use live video or select a model. Walmart lists women’s clothing, men’s clothing, sportswear, shapewear and jeans as examples. Its virtual try-on help page advises checking size guides, fit information, fabric details and customer feedback too.

How to choose between ChatGPT and a retailer app
| Decision point | ChatGPT | Retailer app examples | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you start | An eligible clothing or accessory listing in ChatGPT, or an image you provide in a conversation. | A supported product page in the retailer’s app. | Start with the product you are considering. Retailer tools may cover only selected items. |
| Photo or model options | A selfie or photo for the try-on flow. | ASOS documents an uploaded photo or virtual model; Walmart describes photo, live video or model options when available. | Check the choices shown for that product and account. |
| Availability | The Try on control appears on eligible clothing and accessory listings. | ASOS describes a limited iOS test; Walmart describes eligible apparel in its iOS app. | Do not assume the feature is available for every account, retailer or item. |
| What the preview is for | A visual impression of how an item could look. | ASOS calls its result general guidance; Walmart calls it a visual guide. | Use the image to consider appearance, not to settle on a size. |
| Purchase checks | Merchant measurements, product details and return policy. | ASOS size guides, fit notes and product details; Walmart size guides, fit notes, fabric details and customer feedback. | Use the retailer’s item-specific information for fit decisions. |
Can ChatGPT or a retailer app tell you what size to buy?
No. OpenAI says its try-on images “may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” ASOS similarly describes its feature as general guidance that will not show your exact body shape, proportions, colour or size. Walmart recommends combining its visual guide with size and fit information, fabric details and customer feedback. These are product instructions, not evidence that either type of preview measures fit.
For a size decision, compare your measurements with the retailer’s size guide and read the product’s fit notes and garment details. Check the return policy before ordering if uncertainty remains. The official descriptions reviewed do not provide a controlled, like-for-like accuracy test of ChatGPT and retailer apps, or evidence that either reduces returns or improves purchase outcomes; there is no basis here for calling one more accurate.

What happens to the photos you provide?
ChatGPT reference photos
OpenAI says reference photos are saved for future try-ons and can be changed or removed under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. OpenAI’s general consumer data-use policy says conversations may be used to improve models unless you opt out. That policy does not establish that a reference photo by itself is used for training, so review your current data controls before sharing personal material. See OpenAI’s explanation of how data is used to improve model performance.

ASOS says an input photo is shared with its third-party Virtual Try-On tool to create the visual. The company says uploaded and generated images are stored on the user’s device within the ASOS App for 28 days, and that uploaded images are used only to generate the visual, with possible small adjustments such as lighting or posture. This describes ASOS’s feature; it should not be assumed to apply to other retailers. ASOS’s customer-care page provides its image-handling details.
