If Linux does not detect your drawing tablet, first find out which layer is failing: USB connection, driver access, OpenTabletDriver’s virtual device, or desktop input recognition. Check USB enumeration before changing drivers, then follow the diagnostic branch for the driver you intend to use.
1. Check whether Linux sees the tablet over USB
Connect the tablet and check whether it appears in USB device listings. OpenTabletDriver’s FAQ recommends checking lsusb and watching dmesg or udevadm monitor as you connect it. See the OpenTabletDriver FAQ for its connection checks.
- Run
lsusbbefore and after connecting the tablet; look for a newly listed device. - Watch
dmesgorudevadm monitorwhile connecting it, and note whether Linux reports a new USB event or an error. - If no device or event appears, try another USB port. If the tablet has a removable cable, check the connection and try a compatible cable that supports data, not charging alone.
For OpenTabletDriver specifically, USB is the reliable supported connection route described in its FAQ. Bluetooth tablets are not currently supported by that project, and wireless-dongle support is partial. A USB check that finds nothing is a connection or enumeration problem to investigate before OpenTabletDriver settings.
2. Confirm the model and choose one driver route
USB detection does not prove that a particular driver supports the tablet. Identify the exact model and connection method, then check the driver’s own compatibility information. OpenTabletDriver directs users to its supported tablet list; support depends on both model and connection.

Decide whether you are setting up OpenTabletDriver or using Linux’s native Wacom/kernel input route. Their module and permission requirements differ. Do not apply instructions to disable or unload a module just because another driver’s guide calls it a conflict: the module may be required for the native route.
3. If USB sees it but OpenTabletDriver does not
OpenTabletDriver’s Linux FAQ recommends checking its logs for warnings and errors. Two common problems are another tablet driver being found and insufficient access to a raw HID device such as /dev/hidrawX.

- Another tablet driver found: Follow OpenTabletDriver’s Linux guidance for the competing module only if you have chosen OpenTabletDriver. Its permissions documentation identifies
wacomandhid_uclogicas possible conflicts; these may be part of a different native-driver setup. - Permission or access error: Follow the project’s instructions for your installation method. OpenTabletDriver needs access to
/dev/uinputand other system paths; access to/dev/hidrawXmay also be relevant.
Use the exact error and package-specific instructions rather than applying a generic command from a different distribution or installation. OpenTabletDriver documents the relevant requirements on its permissions page.
4. Distinguish tablet detection from virtual-device setup
OpenTabletDriver can see the physical tablet yet fail to create or use its virtual input device. Its FAQ maps several errors to different causes:

These errors do not necessarily mean the tablet is absent from USB. Work on the layer named by the error instead of replacing a cable or changing tablet support settings without evidence.
5. If the desktop input stack ignores the tablet
A device may enumerate and still fail to qualify as a tablet to libinput. The libinput tablet-debugging documentation explains that libinput ignores devices missing required tablet capabilities and recommends using libinput record to verify device details.

- Missing X/Y axes: This can indicate that a device was incorrectly given a tablet udev tag.
- Missing pen or stylus-button capability: This can point to a kernel driver issue or a problem with the device’s HID descriptor.
- Missing axis resolution: A hwdb entry may provide the needed metadata.
Use the diagnostic output to identify which capability is absent before changing configuration. As libinput’s documentation puts it, “When these capabilities are missing, libinput ignores the device and prints an error to the log.”

If you are using the native Wacom stack rather than OpenTabletDriver, follow the Linux Wacom Project’s guidance for that route. Its project site explains that Wayland input is processed by libinput and advises installing or updating libinput if applications do not recognize tablet events.

Wacom’s developer documentation says input-wacom may be needed if a connected tablet does not work at all. If you use a custom kernel, check that current kernel Wacom HID support is enabled. Apply module or kernel changes only according to the instructions for your distribution and chosen driver.
