Windows Terminal vs. PowerShell vs. Command Prompt: Which Should You Use?

PowerShell is the best default for new Windows automation, Command Prompt remains useful for legacy workflows, and Windows Terminal can host both.

For new Windows automation and administration, use PowerShell. Use Command Prompt (cmd.exe) when a legacy command, batch file, or set of instructions specifically requires it. Windows Terminal is different: it is a graphical host that can run either shell, so you can use PowerShell or Command Prompt inside it.

What is the difference between a terminal and a shell?

A shell interprets commands. PowerShell and Command Prompt are shells; Windows Terminal is an application that displays command-line programs and provides the window around them. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Windows Terminal FAQ.

That means these are not three mutually exclusive choices. You might open PowerShell in Windows Terminal, open Command Prompt in the same app, or run either shell through another supported console host. Windows Terminal can also host WSL distributions, Azure Cloud Shell, Git Bash, and other command-line applications.

Which one should you use?

Choose PowerShell for new Windows automation

PowerShell is the strongest default for system administration and new Windows scripts. It supports PowerShell cmdlets as well as Windows commands, and Microsoft recommends it for robust, up-to-date Windows automation. Its commands and scripting model differ from traditional Command Prompt, so CMD-specific instructions may need adapting.

Choose Command Prompt when compatibility calls for it

Use cmd.exe when a guide explicitly says to run a command in Command Prompt, when you need to run an existing .bat workflow, or when a legacy tool expects the traditional Windows command shell. Command Prompt runs Windows commands but does not run PowerShell cmdlets directly. See Microsoft’s Windows commands reference for its shell guidance.

Choose Windows Terminal for the interface

Use Windows Terminal when you want one customizable window for multiple command-line applications. It offers profiles, tabs, panes, themes, custom shortcuts, Unicode and UTF-8 support, and GPU-accelerated text rendering. Those features change how you work with a shell; they do not replace the shell or determine which commands it understands. Microsoft’s Windows Terminal overview describes its features.

Option What it is Best reason to choose it Key distinction
Windows Terminal Graphical terminal host Run several command-line applications in a window with tabs, panes, and customization Choose a shell or other command-line profile to run in it

Command Prompt (cmd.exe) Traditional Windows command shell Existing batch workflows or instructions that require CMD It does not run PowerShell cmdlets directly

Windows Terminal and the two shells occupy different layers, so you can combine them rather than choosing just one. Microsoft covers the distinction in its FAQ and shell capabilities in its Windows commands reference.

How to set up Windows Terminal

Windows Terminal includes profiles for Windows PowerShell, Command Prompt, and Azure Cloud Shell by default. It can also create profiles automatically for installed WSL distributions; Microsoft’s tips and tricks explain its profile behavior.

What to know about elevated tabs

If you run commands as an administrator, note that Windows Terminal cannot mix administrator-level and non-administrator tabs in the same window, according to Microsoft’s FAQ.
