Why Your Python Function Returns None: Common Causes and Fixes

Python returns None when a function falls through, uses a bare return, or fails to pass a helper result back. Trace each control-flow path to fix it.

If a Python function returns None unexpectedly, trace the path taken through that call. A function returns the value of the last return statement it executes; if it reaches the end without one, or executes a bare return, its result is None. The most common fixes are to return a value on every result-producing path, return a helper’s result from its wrapper, and avoid returning from finally unless replacing an earlier result is intentional.

What does it mean when a Python function returns None?

None is Python’s singleton null object. It is not the same as zero, an empty string, or an empty collection. A call to a user-defined function returns the value from the last return statement executed, unless the call raises an exception. If execution reaches the end of the function without executing return, Python returns None implicitly. A bare return also returns None.

These rules are documented in the Python 3.14.7 Language Reference and the Python 3.14.8 tutorial.

How to find where None is coming from

  1. Inspect the function that is actually called. Confirm that the call reaches the definition you expect, especially if names are reassigned or imported from multiple places.
  2. Trace each route through the function. Follow every if, elif, and else, as well as loop exits, exception handlers, and any finally block. Look for a route that reaches the end without returning a value.
  3. Check what each return says. return result supplies a value; return by itself supplies None.
  4. Inspect calls to helpers. If the function calls another function, check whether it returns that call’s result or merely calls it.
  5. Make the result visible at the call site. Assign the result and inspect its representation: result = function(), then print(repr(result)). In interactive use, a lone None may not be displayed, so explicit inspection helps distinguish it from no visible output.

Common causes and their fixes

A branch reaches the end without returning

A function may return a value for one condition but fall through for another. For example:

def label_for(score):
    if score >= 50:
        return "pass"

result = label_for(20)
print(repr(result))  # None

The function has no return for scores below 50, so that route reaches the end. Add a return for the remaining case if it has a meaningful result:

def label_for(score):
    if score >= 50:
        return "pass"
    return "fail"

If the input is invalid rather than a case with a result, raise a deliberate exception instead of silently falling through.

A bare return exits before the result is produced

A bare return ends the function immediately and returns None. If the caller needs a result, include it in the return statement:

def first_item(items):
    if not items:
        return None
    return items[0]

Here the early None is explicit and may be appropriate if an empty input means “no item.” If that is not the intended behavior, choose a different result or raise an exception.

The function prints instead of returning

print() displays text; it does not make that text the function’s return value. The Python tutorial illustrates the distinction by contrasting a function that prints a Fibonacci sequence with one that returns a list. For a value-producing function, return the data and let the caller decide whether to display it:

def make_greeting(name):
    return f"Hello, {name}!"

greeting = make_greeting("Ada")
print(greeting)

A function that only performs an intended side effect, such as displaying output, need not provide a meaningful result to its caller. The important distinction is whether the caller needs a value or the function’s purpose is the side effect.

A wrapper calls a helper but discards its result

Calling a helper does not automatically pass its result back through the function that called it. The wrapper needs its own return:

def calculate_total(items):
    return sum(items)

def report_total(items):
    calculate_total(items)  # result is discarded

print(repr(report_total([2, 3])))  # None

Fix the wrapper by returning the helper call:

def report_total(items):
    return calculate_total(items)

A return in finally replaces the earlier result

A return executed in a finally block becomes the last executed return and determines the function’s result. That can replace a value returned from try:

def get_value():
    try:
        return 42
    finally:
        return None

print(get_value())  # None

Use finally for cleanup, not to return a value that unintentionally overrides another return. The Python 3.11.17 documentation explains return behavior in compound statements.

Decide whether the function should return a value

Function’s purpose Appropriate design
Compute or retrieve a result for the caller Return the result explicitly on every relevant path.
Perform a side effect, such as displaying output Perform the side effect; the caller should not assume the displayed output is the return value.

Python’s tutorial discusses this distinction between displaying output and returning a value in More Control Flow Tools. The language reference describes the return statement and its default value when no expression is supplied in Simple statements.
