It can help you decide whether an investment fits your finances, how much loss you could bear, and which risks you are willing to take. Consider price swings separately from custody, platform, liquidity, lending, regulatory, and fraud risks.
Start with what the money is for—and what you can afford to lose
Before considering a speculative position, decide what the money is meant to do and when you might need it. Money set aside for near-term expenses or emergencies has a different purpose from money you can leave invested without relying on it.

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy put the central constraint plainly in its March 23, 2023, Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities: Investor Alert: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” Treat that as a stress test, not a forecast that a total loss will occur. Ask whether losing the full amount would interfere with essential expenses, debt payments, or other financial goals. If it would, the amount is beyond your capacity for this kind of risk.

There is no universally established portfolio percentage for crypto. The appropriate amount depends on your own financial situation, risk tolerance, and timeframe; the SEC does not prescribe a crypto allocation in its investor guidance. Choose a limit based on your circumstances rather than copying a percentage from someone else.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Consider concentration, not just the number of tokens
A position can become a large part of your overall portfolio if its value rises, even if you did not add money. Decide in advance how you will review that concentration and whether you would rebalance; any such plan should reflect your own goals, costs, and tax circumstances.
Compare crypto exposure with the rest of your assets rather than assessing each token in isolation. The SEC’s Investor.gov Tips for 2026, dated March 31, 2026, describes diversification as “investing in a variety of assets to lower the overall risk of your investment portfolio.” Owning several tokens does not by itself establish meaningful diversification: their prices may move together, and each may share exposure to crypto-market or trading-platform disruptions. The cited guidance does not establish how much diversification any particular mix provides.

Choose how you want exposure—and understand what changes
You can hold crypto directly, rely on a provider to hold it for you, or use an exchange-traded product. These are different ways to access exposure, not interchangeable guarantees of safety. The table summarizes the questions to investigate; actual fees, account terms, liquidity, protections, and recovery options depend on the specific provider or product and jurisdiction.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Route | Control and recovery | Risks to examine | Before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct holding with self-custody | You control the private keys or passcodes used to access the crypto. Recovery may depend on securely keeping the necessary keys or recovery information. | Price and liquidity risk remain. Losing keys or falling for phishing can prevent access; mistakes in handling or transferring assets may be difficult to reverse. | Learn the recovery process and key-handling responsibilities before moving assets. Review any wallet or service terms and fees that apply. |
| Holding through a custodian or platform | The provider controls or safeguards access on your behalf. Access and recovery depend in part on its systems, procedures, and continued operation. | In addition to price risk, consider provider failure, account restrictions, security incidents, withdrawal terms, and the possibility that a market or service becomes unavailable. | Read the custody, withdrawal, fee, and account terms. Determine what happens if the provider suspends withdrawals or fails, and what protections apply to that specific provider and account. |
| Exchange-traded exposure | You hold a product through a brokerage account rather than personally managing the underlying crypto’s keys. You rely on the product’s structure and service providers. | Product fees and terms, market liquidity, and the risks of the underlying asset still matter. The SEC’s discussion concerns spot bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products (ETPs); it does not establish that every listed product or every token has the same structure or protections. | Read the product disclosures and brokerage terms. Check what the product holds, its fees, trading arrangements, and the protections that apply to that particular product in your jurisdiction. |
The SEC says spot bitcoin and ether ETPs can provide exposure without some risks of transacting personally and handling keys. It also describes bitcoin and ether as highly speculative, notes high volatility, and warns of possible fraud or manipulation in underlying markets. An ETP changes some mechanics; it does not remove the investment risk. Do not assume the SEC’s discussion of those products applies to every crypto asset or listed product.

Assess the asset, venue, and ability to exit
Price is only one part of the decision. Before investing in a token, consider whether you can find clear, credible information about the project and its market, and what could prevent you from selling or accessing it when you want. In crypto-asset-securities contexts, the SEC identifies concerns including limited or missing disclosures, concentrated ownership or control, thin liquidity, custody arrangements, and the possibility that trading or a market could disappear. These are useful questions, not a complete screening test and not a claim that every token has the same legal status or risk profile.
- Information: What is disclosed about the project, its operators, and how the asset works? Can you verify important claims independently?
- Control and transparency: Is ownership or decision-making concentrated? Are material changes and conflicts easy to understand?
- Trading and liquidity: Where does trading occur, and might a thin market make it difficult to sell at a reasonable price? Could a venue stop supporting the asset?
- Custody and access: Who controls the keys, and what happens if the provider, wallet, or trading service has a technical or operational problem?
- Legal and product details: What protections and rules apply to the specific asset, service, and jurisdiction? A label such as “crypto” does not settle an asset’s legal classification.
Liquidity can change. A displayed price or past ability to trade does not ensure that a buyer will be available when you want to sell or withdraw. Check the actual venue and product terms rather than treating all crypto markets as equally accessible.

Treat lending and yield as a separate risk decision
An account that pays interest or yield on crypto adds risks beyond simply holding an asset. The SEC cautions that crypto interest-bearing accounts are not equivalent to insured bank deposits. Do not assume a bank-deposit guarantee applies because an account uses words such as “savings,” “interest,” or “yield.”
When you lend or deposit crypto with a provider, you may rely on that provider’s ability to meet its obligations and return assets. The SEC identifies provider failure, illiquidity, disappearing markets, regulatory change, fraud, volatility, and technical problems among the risks to consider. Withdrawal limits or a provider’s financial distress can make access difficult precisely when you want to exit. Read the agreement to understand what the provider may do with assets, when withdrawals can be delayed, and what claims you would have if it fails. The specific terms and legal treatment depend on the product and jurisdiction.

Use a deliberate process before placing an order
- Set the purpose and timeframe. Identify when you may need the money and whether the position could remain exposed through a severe downturn or a period when trading or withdrawals are disrupted.
- Set a loss limit in dollars. Choose an amount you could lose entirely without endangering essential needs or other goals. Do not substitute a universal percentage for this personal assessment.
- Choose the exposure route. Decide between self-custody, a provider, or a specific exchange-traded product, then compare who controls access, what fees and terms apply, and how you could recover or exit.
- Check the asset and venue. Review available disclosures, market liquidity, concentration or control, custody arrangements, and the possibility that the venue or market becomes unavailable. Verify claims independently.
- Decide whether yield is involved. Treat lending or interest-bearing arrangements as an additional counterparty and access risk, not an automatic feature of holding crypto.
- Write down review and exit conditions. Decide what change in your finances, the asset, the provider, or the market would lead you to reassess. A plan can help make decisions less reactive, but it cannot ensure a sale at a chosen price or prevent losses.
Recognize and avoid investment scams
The SEC warns that crypto-related scammers use multiple approaches and that tracing or recovering transferred funds may be difficult. Be especially cautious if someone promises guaranteed high returns, claims an investment has “little risk,” pressures you to act quickly, or asks you to send crypto to a supposed investment manager.
- Pause when a pitch relies on urgency, secrecy, or fear of missing out.
- Verify the seller, platform, and investment claims independently using contact details and sources you find yourself—not just links or documents supplied by the person making the pitch.
- Do not send crypto to unsolicited contacts or to an address supplied by someone claiming they will invest, safeguard, or recover it for you.
- Be wary of anyone who guarantees returns or says a loss is impossible.
If you have already sent funds, do not assume that a person claiming they can recover them is legitimate; recovery can be difficult, and further payment requests may expose you to additional loss.
Protect access if you choose self-custody
Self-custody shifts key-handling responsibility to you. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance said in its December 12, 2025, Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” Anyone who obtains them may be able to access your crypto.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Learn how the wallet’s recovery process works before storing assets in it, and keep recovery information secure and separate from routine account access.
- Never enter a seed phrase or private key in response to an unsolicited message, support request, or unexpected website prompt.
- Check addresses and transaction details carefully before authorizing transfers; blockchain transactions may be difficult or impossible to reverse.
- Use strong, unique account credentials and multifactor authentication where available, and stay alert to impersonation and phishing attempts.
A wallet helps manage access; it does not remove market, token, scam, or service-provider risks. If you use a third-party wallet or related service, review its terms and security practices as well as your own key-management responsibilities.
Keep the limits of any risk plan in view
Rules, investor protections, and product structures vary by asset, provider, product, and jurisdiction. The SEC materials cited here are U.S. investor education guidance; its alerts about crypto-asset securities do not determine the legal status of every token or provide individualized financial advice. A sound plan can help keep a speculative position within limits you can tolerate, but no allocation, custody method, trading rule, or product wrapper can guarantee a return or eliminate loss.
