You do not need to connect a phone to use the car’s built-in AAOS system, though a vehicle with AAOS may also support Android Auto.
How Android Auto and Android Automotive differ
| Question | Android Auto | Android Automotive OS (AAOS) |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | On a compatible Android phone; the experience appears on a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. | On the vehicle’s own computing system as its infotainment operating system. |
| How do apps get to the display? | The phone connects to the car system, which presents supported phone apps in a driving-oriented interface. | Users install supported apps directly onto the vehicle. |
| Is an Android phone needed? | Yes. Google’s Android Auto overview lists phones running Android 9 (API level 28) or higher, as well as a compatible car or stereo: Android for Cars overview and Android Auto overview. | No phone projection is required to run the built-in infotainment system. Google says vehicles with Android Automotive OS run Android 9 or higher; that is a vehicle-platform statement, not the Android Auto phone requirement: Android for Cars overview. |
| Where is it available? | In a vehicle or aftermarket stereo that supports Android Auto. | Only in vehicles equipped with AAOS. Check the specific vehicle’s official specifications. |
| Can a car have both? | Yes. | Yes. Android Developers (Google) explicitly says the systems are not exclusive: Android Automotive OS overview. |
Do you need an Android phone for Android Automotive?
No. Android Automotive OS is installed in the vehicle, so the car’s infotainment system does not depend on projecting apps from your phone. You may still choose to connect a phone for other supported features, but phone projection is not what makes AAOS run.
Android Auto is different: it uses a compatible Android phone connected to a compatible car display or stereo. Google’s current developer documentation lists Android 9 (API level 28) and higher as the Android Auto phone baseline. That requirement applies to the phone, not to a car’s AAOS version.
How app access works on each system
Android Auto uses supported phone apps
Android Auto brings supported apps from the phone into an interface designed for use while driving. It does not mirror every app on the phone. Google limits in-car apps by category and driver-distraction rules; see its Android for Cars overview and car app quality and distribution guidance.

AAOS apps are installed in the vehicle
With AAOS, users can install compatible apps on the car itself. Google describes supported media, templated, and parked-app categories, with availability depending on the platform and whether the vehicle is moving or parked. The car’s app library is therefore curated, not a copy of the full Android phone app library. Google’s Android for Cars overview explains the distinction.
App rules also differ by platform. Google’s distribution guidance says communication apps are not supported on AAOS; calls and messages may instead be available through a manufacturer’s companion integration where the vehicle supports it: car app quality and distribution guidance.

Can a vehicle support both?
Yes. Android Auto and AAOS are not competing labels where choosing one rules out the other. A car can use AAOS as its built-in infotainment operating system and also offer Android Auto phone projection. Android Developers (Google) states that “Android Automotive OS and Android Auto are not exclusive” in its Android Automotive OS overview.

- You want to use your current Android phone on the car display: Check that the phone meets Google’s Android Auto baseline and that the vehicle or stereo specifically supports Android Auto.
- You want Android built into the infotainment system: Look for “Android Automotive OS” or “Google built-in” in the vehicle maker’s official specifications. Google associates Google apps and services with cars identified as Google built-in; do not assume every AAOS vehicle includes them.
- Your current car does not support Android Auto: A compatible aftermarket stereo may be an option. Confirm vehicle fit, installation needs, wired or wireless behavior, and the stereo’s exact compatibility before buying; these details vary by product.
Google’s overview explains the platform terms but does not provide a current model list by region or model year, so verify the exact vehicle configuration with its manufacturer.

What “Android Automotive” means in a car listing
Android Automotive OS names the built-in operating system. “Google built-in” is a vehicle description associated with Google apps and services, but the available features can vary by automaker and vehicle configuration. For a purchase decision, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model, trim, market, and model year rather than inferring features from the Android name alone.
