If your Logitech MX Keys backlight is off, first check the battery and room brightness: the keyboard can shut off its lighting automatically when the room is bright or the battery is at 10% or lower. Then test the brightness keys and the Backlighting setting in Logi Options+. These checks help separate expected behavior from a setting problem before you contact Logitech support.

Why your MX Keys backlight may be off

The original MX Keys uses an ambient light sensor to adjust its backlighting. Logitech’s examples for that model show L2 (25%) below 100 lux, L4 (50%) between 100 and 200 lux, and L0 (off) above 200 lux. Logitech says the keyboard has eight brightness levels. These are the original MX Keys’ published examples; behavior and available controls may vary across MX Keys models.

Low battery is another normal reason for the light to go out: Logitech says backlighting turns off at 10% battery, and the battery LED is red at 10% and below. If the keyboard has enough charge and you are testing in a dim room, the brightness keys or Logi Options+ settings may be responsible.

How to troubleshoot the MX Keys backlight

  1. Check the battery and charge the keyboard

Look for a red battery LED or a battery reading around 10%. Connect the USB-C cable to the port at the keyboard’s top right and allow it to charge, then test the backlight again. You can continue typing while the keyboard charges. Because Logitech’s general guidance notes that proximity-based backlighting may be disabled while some keyboards are charging, unplug the cable and retry if the light still behaves unexpectedly.

  2. Test in a dim room

Move the keyboard away from bright light and try again. You can briefly shade the ambient-light sensor as a diagnostic; Logitech identifies the sensor alongside the battery-status LED on the original MX Keys. If the backlight returns in dim conditions, its earlier shutoff in a bright room was consistent with automatic sensor behavior, not necessarily a fault. See Logitech’s MX Keys setup and behavior guidance.

  3. Use the brightness keys

Press the key marked with the illuminated-key or backlight symbol to increase brightness. Use its paired decrease key to cycle down through the levels. Logitech describes two backlight keys on MX keyboards and eight levels on the original MX Keys. Check the symbols printed on your particular keyboard; the exact key behavior can depend on the model and its Fn setting.

  4. Check Backlighting in Logi Options+

Open Logi Options+, select your MX Keys keyboard, and choose Backlighting. Make sure the backlighting switch is on. Review brightness, duration, and battery-saving settings as well; which controls appear can depend on the model and app version. Logitech’s keyboard backlight guide recommends checking the software settings when lighting has been turned off.

  5. Check for software updates, then retest

After checking the settings, use Logi Options+ to check for available software updates and test the light again. Logitech says its older Firmware Update Tool for the original MX Keys is no longer supported or maintained, and recommends Logi Options+ for supported devices. Logitech does not say that a firmware update is a guaranteed fix for a backlight problem, so do not treat one as a repair promise.

When to contact Logitech support

If the battery is charged, the room is dim, the brightness controls have been tried, and Backlighting is enabled in Logi Options+, but no light appears, the basic published guidance does not establish whether the cause is a component or another fault. Contact Logitech support and check warranty options. The cited MX Keys guidance does not provide an owner repair procedure for the backlight hardware.
