While a video is playing on Apple TV, press Play/Pause to reveal playback controls, swipe up, then choose Subtitles to turn captions on or Audio to change the spoken language. Those are separate controls, and each only offers tracks available for the current film or programme.
Turn on subtitles for the video you’re watching

Start playing the film or TV programme.

Press Play/Pause on your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote to show the playback controls.

Swipe up, select Subtitles, and turn subtitles on. If language choices are shown, select the subtitle language you want.

When available, you can also adjust subtitle style from the subtitle controls.

Change the spoken audio language

During playback, press Play/Pause to show the controls.

Swipe up and select Audio.

Choose an available audio language.
Audio changes spoken dialogue; it does not change subtitle language. Apple’s current instructions for the Apple TV app are in Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app.

Set default subtitle and audio languages
To choose preferences for future playback on Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio. Set Subtitle Language for subtitles and Audio Language for spoken dialogue. These defaults do not add tracks a particular title does not include; you can still select among that title’s available options during playback.

Apple TV has an Automatic Subtitles setting in Settings > Video and Audio. Apple TV 4K also offers automatic subtitle behavior for different-language content, muted playback, or after skipping back. The exact choices depend on the device and software version; Apple describes them in its Apple TV 4K subtitle guide.

Use Siri to turn subtitles on
On Apple TV 4K, Siri can respond to requests such as “Turn on closed captioning” or “Turn on French subtitles.” Asking “What did she just say?” rewinds playback by 10 seconds and temporarily turns subtitles on. See Apple’s Siri playback guidance for these examples.
If the language or subtitle option is missing
A subtitle or audio language may be absent because the film or programme does not provide that track. Check the options for the title itself before changing device settings; a default preference cannot make an unavailable track appear.

Apple TV (3rd generation) uses a different shortcut
On Apple TV (3rd generation), hold Select on the remote for three seconds during playback to display the Subtitles tab. This is a legacy-device shortcut, not the current Apple TV 4K playback procedure.
