The right website analytics tool is the one that can measure your important traffic sources and the specific actions you count as conversions—and that your team can operate responsibly. Matomo and Plausible both offer traffic and conversion features, but differ in hosting choices and feature sets. Microsoft Clarity focuses on behavior analysis such as heatmaps and recordings, so it can complement an analytics platform rather than replace one. Choose by measurement needs, privacy and governance, operational workload, and current plan limits—not by a universal “best” ranking.
What website analytics needs to measure
Start with the decisions you want the data to inform. A traffic report can show page views and acquisition sources, but it does not by itself tell you how many people signed up, submitted a lead form, or completed a purchase. Those actions need to be defined and captured as events, goals, or conversions in the platform you choose.
Write down the measurements before comparing tools
- Traffic: Which pages, sources, and campaign parameters do you need to report on?
- Conversions: Which exact actions count—such as a completed checkout, a submitted form, or a registration? Decide how each action will be recorded.
- Revenue: Do you need revenue or ecommerce conversion reporting, and can the product and chosen plan support that workflow?
- Analysis: Are aggregate reports enough, or do you need funnels, segmentation, visitor journeys, heatmaps, or session recordings?
Do not treat page views as a count of people, visits, leads, or sales. Likewise, a conversion rate is only meaningful when its conversion event and denominator are defined consistently. Verify how your chosen implementation records and attributes each action before using the figures to make decisions.
How the main options differ
| Tool | Useful for | Hosting and operational tradeoff | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matomo Analytics | Traffic sources, events and conversions, funnels, segmentation, heatmaps, and session recordings. | The vendor describes both cloud and on-premise options. With an on-premise deployment, your team operates the installation. | Current pricing, hosting requirements, privacy configuration, and which features are included in the plan or deployment you select. |
| Plausible Analytics | A simple traffic dashboard, campaign measurement, goals, custom events, revenue tracking, funnels, and journeys. | The hosted service is vendor-managed. Its Community Edition is self-hosted, so the operator is responsible for infrastructure; the vendor says some premium features are absent from that edition. | Current plan limits and whether the hosted or Community Edition feature set covers your conversion workflow. See the vendor’s self-hosting and Community Edition comparison. |
| Microsoft Clarity | Session recordings, heatmaps, and behavior clues such as click or scroll patterns. The vendor also lists conversion insights and Google Analytics integration. | The vendor’s pricing page describes Clarity as free. It is best considered for behavior analysis alongside traffic and campaign reporting. | Current feature availability, privacy settings, and whether its behavior reports address the question you need to answer. |
| Google Analytics (GA4) | A general analytics option to evaluate if your team already works in the Google ecosystem. | Hosting and operational details are not established here. | Confirm current event, conversion, integration, privacy, and plan details in the official documentation, including the page on events. |
Choose based on the work your team needs to do
Choose Matomo if you need deployment choice and broader analysis features
Matomo lists traffic sources, events and conversions, funnels and flows, segmentation, A/B testing, heatmaps, and recordings, and describes both cloud and on-premise deployments. That breadth may suit teams seeking more than aggregate traffic reports or wanting to choose between vendor-hosted and self-operated deployment. The vendor advertises a 21-day cloud trial and free self-hosting; confirm the current terms, hosting requirements, and feature availability before committing.

#1 Best Overall
Choose Plausible if you want a focused dashboard or are prepared to self-host
Plausible lists campaign tracking, goals, custom events, revenue tracking, funnels, and journeys. Its hosted service shifts infrastructure operations to the vendor. The Community Edition shifts those responsibilities to you, and the vendor says it does not include every premium feature. Compare the live feature and plan details against the actions you need to measure rather than assuming the two editions are interchangeable.
Add Clarity when interaction patterns are the missing piece
Traffic and conversion reports can show that visitors leave a page or fail to complete a flow, but may not explain what they did on the page. Clarity’s recordings and heatmaps are intended to surface interaction patterns such as clicks and scrolling. The vendor lists Google Analytics integration, making it a possible complement when you need behavior clues in addition to traffic reporting. Check current availability and privacy settings before deployment.

Evaluate GA4 against your existing setup
Google Analytics is a major general-purpose option, particularly worth evaluating when your organization already uses Google’s ecosystem. The official pages linked here identify how it works and explain events, but confirm the current documentation for the exact event and conversion workflow, integrations, privacy configuration, and any plan details relevant to your implementation before deciding.
Compare privacy, control, and operating effort
Privacy labels are not legal determinations. Matomo lists cookieless tracking and anonymization features. Plausible describes its approach as cookie-free and says its hosted data is processed on European-owned infrastructure. These are vendor descriptions of their products, not proof that a particular implementation meets every legal obligation.

Assess what your site actually collects, where it is processed, which controls you can configure, and whether consent or other obligations apply to your jurisdiction and implementation. Analytics is only one part of a site’s data processing: review the behavior of other scripts and services as well.
Hosting changes who does operational work. A managed service reduces the infrastructure responsibilities your team handles directly; self-hosting gives your team responsibility for deployment, security, capacity, backups, and updates. Matomo offers cloud and on-premise choices, while Plausible distinguishes its managed hosted service from its self-hosted Community Edition. Choose self-hosting only if someone can maintain it reliably.

A practical selection checklist
- Define the conversion. Write down each action that matters and how it should be recorded, including any revenue attribution you need.
- Match the reporting depth. Decide whether traffic and campaign dashboards suffice or whether your team also needs funnels, segmentation, journeys, heatmaps, or recordings.
- Check the implementation. Confirm that the chosen tool and plan support the events, goals, and reporting workflow you intend to use.
- Review governance. Identify collected data, processing location, available privacy controls, and applicable consent or legal requirements for your implementation.
- Assign operations. Choose who will handle hosting, security, backups, capacity, and updates if the deployment is self-hosted.
- Compare current total cost and limits. Verify traffic allowances, feature tiers, retention, seats, support, and infrastructure costs on current vendor pages; do not rely on an old plan comparison.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an analytics platform: it does not measure traffic or conversion rates. It is the alternative to try first when the adjacent task is capturing a site’s visual state—for example, creating screenshots for a visual review. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Those capabilities do not replace event tracking or analytics reports.
Or skip the browser setup:
ScreenshotNeo API documentation
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a screenshot or PDF. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Each response indicates the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the documentation for API details and sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Is a cookie-free analytics tool automatically compliant with privacy law?
No. A vendor’s description of its product does not establish whether your specific site configuration and data processing meet the rules that apply to you. Review the implementation and applicable obligations.
Can screenshots tell me how much traffic or how many conversions my site gets?
No. A screenshot records a visual page state; measuring traffic and conversions requires analytics instrumentation that records visits or defined actions.
