Reliable Cucumber automation starts with scenarios that describe one observable behavior, can run independently, and express examples the team agrees are important. Keep business meaning in Gherkin, implementation mechanics in step definitions and helpers, and scenario-specific setup reproducible. Cucumber makes examples executable; it does not, by itself, make a team practice BDD.
What Cucumber is—and what it does not guarantee
Gherkin feature files can work as executable specifications, automated tests, and documentation of system behavior. Teams typically keep them under version control alongside the software they describe. Their value depends on whether the examples communicate behavior clearly and are maintained with the system.

BDD is a collaborative process: teams discover concrete examples, formulate and agree on them in a shared human- and machine-readable form, then automate them against the system. Cucumber’s BDD documentation puts it plainly: “There’s much more to BDD than just using Cucumber.” Cucumber BDD documentation

Give each scenario one clear purpose: a behavior, its relevant starting conditions, and an outcome a person can observe. Cucumber recommends three to five steps per example as a useful guide—not a rigid limit. A scenario should contain enough detail to explain the behavior without turning into a script of internal mechanics. Cucumber Gherkin reference
Prefer domain language over UI choreography or implementation details. For example, “Then the user will be notified” can remain meaningful if the delivery channel changes. A sequence such as “When I click the bell icon and open the SMS tab” ties the specification to a particular interface. Keep that interaction in the step definition or helper code when it is not itself part of the behavior under discussion.
A useful test is whether a change in implementation, with no change in user-visible behavior, would force you to rewrite the scenario. If so, the wording may be too coupled to internals. Assertions still need to check an observable result; domain language is not a substitute for verification.
Use Given, When, and Then to express a behavior
- Given establishes a known starting state or relevant precondition.
- When describes the event or action being exercised.
- Then asserts the observable outcome.
For example, a notification scenario might say that an account is eligible for an alert, an event occurs, and the user receives a notification. The scenario should state the meaningful precondition and result; helper code can handle the mechanics of creating records or interacting with a browser.
Not every scenario needs all three keywords, but their roles help keep examples understandable. In particular, a Then step should verify a result rather than perform another action that belongs in When.
Make every scenario independent and reproducible
A scenario should arrange the state it needs and be runnable by itself, in any order, or in parallel without relying on another scenario’s side effects. This makes failures easier to interpret and prevents execution order from becoming an invisible requirement. Cucumber FAQ
- Create or reset required data as part of the scenario’s setup path.
- Use shared helper methods for repeated setup behavior, such as logging in, rather than depending on a previous scenario.
- Make meaningful preconditions visible in the feature when that helps readers understand the example.
- Check whether parallel runs share mutable accounts, files, databases, or browser state; isolate those resources when needed.
In Cucumber-JS, parallel lifecycle behavior has implementation-specific details. Its documentation says BeforeAll and AfterAll hooks run once per worker by default in parallel mode; coordinator hooks are for work that should happen once for the run. This behavior is documented as added in cucumber-js v13.2.0. Use worker-local setup for resources each worker needs, such as its own browser, and check the versioned documentation for the exact API. Do not assume the same hook behavior for JVM, Ruby, or another implementation. cucumber-js parallel execution documentation
Keep step definitions unique and explicit
Step definitions connect Gherkin text to executable code. Keep their matching expressions narrow enough that a step maps to one intended implementation. Cucumber ignores the Given, When, or Then keyword when matching step text, so changing a keyword does not make an otherwise identical definition distinct. Duplicate or overlapping patterns can therefore create ambiguity. Cucumber step definitions
Assert outcomes explicitly in the step definition or a helper it calls. A step succeeds when its implementation does not raise an error; returning false or another falsy value does not, by itself, fail the step. Undefined, pending, or failed steps cause later steps in the same scenario to be skipped. Keeping scenarios focused helps ensure that a failure points to one behavior rather than suppressing unrelated checks. Cucumber API documentation
Use Background, hooks, and tags for the right jobs
Background
Use a Background for shared, meaningful context that applies to the scenarios in a feature and belongs in the reader-facing specification. If a precondition helps someone understand why a scenario works, hiding it in a hook may make the feature less clear.
Rank #4
Hooks
Use hooks for lifecycle setup and teardown that need not be part of the business-facing example. Hooks can also make conditional setup possible, but hidden setup can make a feature harder to understand. Choose explicit scenario steps or a Background when they communicate the precondition better. Exact hook APIs and lifecycle semantics vary by Cucumber implementation and version. Cucumber API documentation
Tags
Tags can organize features and scenarios, select which cases run, and restrict hooks to matching scenarios. Keep the tag vocabulary small and tied to a real execution or organization need; tags do not replace a clear scenario or reliable setup. Cucumber API documentation

Do not call scenarios as if they were reusable functions
Scenarios are examples to execute and understand independently, not a library of steps to invoke from other scenarios. When behavior or setup is reused, put it in a shared step definition helper or another appropriate code abstraction. This preserves scenario independence and avoids coupling one example’s meaning or execution to another. Cucumber FAQ

A review checklist for dependable scenarios
- Does the scenario have one clear behavior as its purpose?
- Can it run alone, without depending on a prior scenario?
- Does it establish the state it requires?
- Is the expected result observable and explicitly asserted?
- Would a change to implementation details leave the scenario wording intact if behavior stayed the same?
- Does each step match one intended definition?
- Does parallel execution expose shared mutable state or worker-lifecycle assumptions?
- Are hooks, Background steps, and tags being used for distinct, understandable purposes?
These checks follow from Cucumber’s documented scenario and execution behavior; they are a review aid, not a guarantee that a suite will never be flaky.

If you need screenshots of a page as part of a test workflow, you can make a single GET request to ScreenshotNeo and receive an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target page:

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many steps should a Cucumber scenario have?
Cucumber recommends three to five steps as a useful guide, not a strict rule. Use the number needed to express one behavior clearly.
Can Cucumber tests run in parallel?
Yes, but scenarios must not depend on shared mutable state or execution order. Hook behavior for parallel runs depends on the implementation and version; cucumber-js documents worker and coordinator hooks for its parallel mode.
