1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRobot Framework is an open-source, Python-based automation framework that lets you write tests as readable sequences of keywords. To get started, install it in a project-specific Python environment, create a .robot suite, add a library suited to the system you want to test, and run the suite with robot. Robot Framework is the framework; libraries provide the technology-specific interaction with your application or service.
What Robot Framework does—and what it does not
Robot Framework supports acceptance testing, acceptance test-driven development (ATDD), behavior-driven development (BDD), and robotic process automation (RPA). It is open source under the Apache License 2.0. Its keyword-driven test cases describe actions and checks, while libraries connect those keywords to the system under test. See the official Robot Framework site and its versioned User Guide.
That distinction matters when planning a test: installing Robot Framework alone does not provide every browser, API, or RPA interaction. You also need a compatible library for your target and its dependencies.
Check Python compatibility and create an isolated environment
The current-version installation guide documents Python 3.8 or newer. It identifies Robot Framework 6.1.1 as the latest release supporting Python 3.6 and 3.7. These are version-specific details; confirm the requirements in the current User Guide before choosing a runtime.

A virtual environment keeps one project’s Robot Framework and library packages separate from other Python projects. From your project directory, create one with:
python -m venv .venv
Activate it using the command for your operating system:
- Windows Command Prompt:
.venvScriptsactivate.bat - Windows PowerShell:
.venvScriptsActivate.ps1 - macOS or Linux:
source .venv/bin/activate
The official getting-started and installation documentation covers setup details for supported environments. If activation is unavailable or blocked by local policy, use the Python executable inside the environment to run pip rather than installing into a different interpreter.
Install Robot Framework and verify the command
With the environment active, install the package and check that the command is available:

python -m pip install robotframework
robot --version
Use python -m pip to make it clearer which Python interpreter receives the package. For repeatable team or CI runs, pin the version in your dependency management process instead of relying on whichever release happens to be latest. The User Guide documents installation, upgrades, and selecting a particular version.
Choose a library for the system you are testing
Choose the integration before writing detailed test steps. The official documentation points to these library categories as examples:
| Target | Example library | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Web application | Browser Library or SeleniumLibrary | Supported browser and application interfaces, plus compatibility with your Robot Framework and Python versions. |
| API | Requests Library | Supported request and response workflows, and compatibility with your project’s runtime and framework versions. |
| Robotic process automation | RPA libraries | Whether the library covers the applications and interactions in your workflow, and remains compatible with your runtime. |
These are examples, not a universal ranking. Check each library’s current documentation, maintenance status, compatibility, and keyword coverage for your actual system. The official guide navigation links to the relevant library documentation.
Write a first Robot Framework suite
Create a file named first_test.robot. A basic suite uses section headers such as *** Settings *** for imports and *** Test Cases *** for test cases. A test case is a sequence of keywords. For a quick syntax and runner check that does not require an external library, use the built-in keyword Should Be Equal:

*** Test Cases ***
A simple equality check
Should Be Equal Robot Framework Robot Framework
Run it with robot first_test.robot. This checks that Robot Framework can parse and execute a suite, but it does not test a real application. To exercise a real system, import the chosen library and replace the built-in example with that library’s documented keywords.
A suite that imports a library has this general shape; the library name and keywords must match the library you choose:
*** Settings ***
Library YourLibrary
*** Test Cases ***
A test for the target system
A keyword provided by YourLibrary
Do not leave the example names unchanged and expect them to work: YourLibrary and the keyword are explanatory placeholders, not built-in Robot Framework features.
Keep test intent readable and reuse interaction steps
Libraries provide lower-level keywords that interact with the system. You can define higher-level user keywords in a suite or put reusable definitions in a resource file. This lets test cases express intent while shared keywords handle recurring technology-specific steps. The official User Guide explains suite sections, resources, and user keywords.

Run tests and read the results
Run a single suite by passing its filename, or pass a directory to run suites in that directory:
robot first_test.robot
robot path/to/tests/
By default, Robot Framework writes an XML output file plus an HTML report and log in the current working directory. Check those files after execution: the log provides the detailed keyword-level sequence, while the report gives a human-readable overview. The rebot tool can combine or post-process output files; consult the User Guide for its options.
Organize a project as the suite grows
- Keep test cases focused on behaviors and outcomes rather than duplicating low-level interactions.
- Move shared, higher-level keywords into resource files when multiple suites need them.
- Record framework and library versions in the project’s dependency setup so developers and automated runs use compatible packages.
- Choose a CI system, editor, and repository layout based on your team; Robot Framework does not require one particular vendor or structure.
Troubleshoot common setup and test failures
robot is not recognized or not found
The package may have been installed into a different Python environment, or the environment may not be active. Activate the project’s environment, then run python -m pip show robotframework to check whether that interpreter has the package. If necessary, install with python -m pip install robotframework from the active environment.
Python version is unsupported
Check the requirements for the Robot Framework release you installed. The current-version guide documents Python 3.8 or newer; Python 3.6 and 3.7 support is associated with release 6.1.1. Upgrade Python or select a compatible Robot Framework version, then verify that your libraries also support the combination.

A library cannot be imported
Confirm the library package is installed in the same environment used to run robot, and that the name in the Library setting matches its documentation. Then check for dependency or version incompatibilities. The import error in the log often identifies which module or package could not be loaded.
A keyword is unknown or a test fails
Check spelling and whether the keyword belongs to a library that the suite imports. Open the execution log and follow the failing keyword details before changing the test. A syntax-only suite using built-in keywords can help separate a framework installation problem from a target-specific library or application problem.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Robot Framework itself is open-source software under Apache License 2.0, but the documentation cited here does not establish a universal execution speed, a required CI vendor, or a fixed cost for running tests. Runtime and reliability depend on the target system, libraries, environment, and test design. For dependable results, keep dependencies reproducible and inspect logs when a run fails instead of treating every failure as a framework error.
Or skip the browser setup
If your test workflow needs a website screenshot rather than browser automation, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. For example, capture a page as WebP with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
