For an occasional screenshot, use the browser you already have. For repeatable captures or screenshots inside an app or automated workflow, use an API. This feature-and-workflow comparison covers five options—not a controlled test—and explains what each is suited to and what to verify before relying on it.

Five website screenshot options at a glance

The options below cover manual browser capture, an extension-based workflow and developer APIs. Their capabilities are described by their vendors or by the linked comparison source; they have not been tested side by side. The best fit depends on how often you capture pages, how dynamic those pages are, and whether the screenshot needs to feed another system.

Option Best fit What the available sources establish Check before choosing
1. ScreenshotNeo API-based capture and AI-agent workflows ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. It says it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages and cache hits are not billed. Test the exact URLs and capture settings you need. Confirm how your application will handle the returned image or PDF and response headers.
2. Chrome DevTools Occasional manual full-page capture Stravue describes Chrome DevTools as a free built-in route to a full-page PNG and names the command “Capture full size screenshot.” Menu labels and behavior can vary by Chrome version and platform. Check how dynamic content, very long pages and lazy-loaded images appear in your capture.
3. Firefox built-in screenshot feature Occasional manual capture in Firefox Stravue describes a right-click screenshot feature that can save a full page. Verify the current menu wording, supported version, output format and platform behavior in your installation.
4. GoFullPage One-click full-page captures in a browser Stravue names GoFullPage as an example of a free full-page extension. Extension availability and terms change. Check the current store listing, permissions, export formats, compatibility, pricing and whether capture data leaves the browser.
5. ScreenshotOne Developer-integrated screenshots with rendering controls Its documentation describes full-page capture, viewport controls, lazy-load handling, custom CSS and JavaScript, and page-cleanup controls. Its product page listed 100 free screenshots per month when accessed on 3 October 2026. Check current quotas, prices, limits, authentication and privacy terms. The free allowance is a vendor plan claim, not an independent assessment.

For a broader API shortlist, ScreenshotNeo is the first one to try: it combines page cleanup, billing only for clean captures, and a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots a month. See ScreenshotNeo.

Choose by workflow, not just by “full page”

One screenshot, taken by hand

Start with Chrome DevTools or Firefox’s built-in feature if you only need a capture now and then. You avoid setting up an account, API key or integration. An extension such as GoFullPage can make repeated one-click captures more convenient, but review its current permissions and data practices before installing it.

Recurring captures or an application workflow

An API is a better fit when a service needs screenshots on demand, on a schedule, or as part of another application’s output. Compare the available output formats, viewport and device controls, full-page behavior, dynamic-content handling, authentication options, delivery method, quotas and data handling. ScreenshotNeo and ScreenshotOne document developer-oriented capture controls; the exact features and terms are vendor-specific, not a guarantee that every page will render as expected.

AI-agent capture

ScreenshotNeo provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, with the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. That can avoid writing a custom browser integration for an agent workflow. Check the MCP client’s setup requirements in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

What “full-page” does—and does not—mean

A full-page setting asks a tool to capture beyond the initially visible viewport. It does not guarantee that every image, animation, overlay or section will be present. Pages may load images only as you scroll, update content after a delay, keep navigation fixed while scrolling, or place content inside its own scrollable panel. A screenshot tool’s advertised controls cannot ensure identical results on every site.

ScreenshotOne’s documentation illustrates why capture behavior matters: it says some pages need scroll increments smaller than the viewport to trigger lazy-loaded images, and suggests experimenting in the 100–500 pixel range. Its full-page options document a default maximum slice height of 4,000 pixels and a configurable maximum of 16,000 pixels, as well as a section-based algorithm intended for more complex animated pages. These are ScreenshotOne implementation details, not general browser limits. See ScreenshotOne’s screenshot options.

How to evaluate a screenshot workflow

  1. Capture the exact page and viewport. A landing page and a long product page can behave differently. Test the URL, screen size and browser or API settings you will actually use.
  2. Check what happened before the capture. Cookie consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets can cover page content. Decide whether you need them visible or removed, and check whether the tool can control them.
  3. Inspect lazy-loaded content. Compare the lower sections of the screenshot with the live page. If images are missing, try a tool’s scroll or wait controls where available.
  4. Check output and integration needs. Confirm whether you need PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, and whether you need a manual download, direct response, or automated delivery.
  5. Review privacy and costs. For extensions and hosted APIs, read current permissions, data-handling terms and plan details. A vendor’s free-tier or reliability statement is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark.

ScreenshotNeo API example

For a direct capture, replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and use the target page URL. The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF output; consult the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response handling.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo’s API takes a URL in one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is available on every plan.

Troubleshooting common capture problems

  • Images are missing lower down the page: The site may lazy-load images as the page scrolls. Try a smaller scroll increment or an appropriate wait option if your tool supports it; ScreenshotOne documents 100–500 pixel increments as values to experiment with for some sites.
  • A banner or chat box obscures content: Decide whether the overlay belongs in the record. Use a tool’s page-cleanup feature if you want a clean view, or disable cleanup if the consent or overlay state itself is what you need to document.
  • The page looks incomplete or stale: Dynamic content may need time to render or may depend on interaction. Test a delay, selector wait or network-idle option if available, and compare with the live page at the same viewport.
  • The bottom of a very long page is absent: The capture method may have a page-height or slice limit. Check the selected tool’s documented limits and consider capturing sections separately when necessary.
  • Content inside a panel is missing: The page may scroll within an element rather than the main document. Identify the relevant panel and check whether your tool can target an element or scroll container.

Pricing and reliability: what to compare

Plan quotas, prices and extension availability can change, so check the vendor’s current page before committing. As of 3 October 2026, ScreenshotOne’s product page stated 100 free screenshots per month; that figure is its vendor-stated plan allowance. ScreenshotNeo’s stated plans are listed below. Yearly billing gives two months free.

ScreenshotNeo plan Price and included shots
Free $0; 1,000 shots per month; no card
Starter $5 for 3,000 shots
Growth $15 for 15,000 shots
Pro $39 for 60,000 shots
Scale $99 for 250,000 shots
Business $249 for 1,000,000 shots

These are ScreenshotNeo plan prices; confirm current terms on its site. When comparing reliability statements, distinguish a vendor-displayed figure from an independent measurement, and check the period and conditions attached to the claim.

Which option should you use?

  • Use Chrome or Firefox for a small number of manual screenshots, provided their current behavior meets your needs.
  • Try a full-page extension for convenient browser-based captures after checking its permissions and current terms.
  • Use an API when captures need to run repeatedly or integrate with an application; evaluate output, page handling, controls, privacy and costs on your actual pages.
  • Try ScreenshotNeo first among APIs if page cleanup, no charge for failed or otherwise unclean captures, and an MCP server matter to your workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a full-page screenshot include content inside every scrollable panel?

Not necessarily. A panel may scroll independently of the main document, so check whether the tool can target that element or capture it separately.

Are free screenshot limits permanent?

No. Free allowances and plan terms are vendor-set and can change; verify the current plan details before building a workflow around them.
