PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo give PhantomJS more time for a slow resource, set page.settings.resourceTimeout in milliseconds before calling page.open(). If the page opens but its JavaScript-driven content is not ready when the screenshot is taken, add a separate wait before page.render(). A wrapper may also impose its own timeout on the entire job, which requires changing that wrapper’s setting instead.
Identify which timeout you need to change
“Screenshot timeout” can refer to three different clocks. Increasing one does not necessarily affect the others.
| Control | What it times | Unit and start point | What happens at expiry |
|---|---|---|---|
page.settings.resourceTimeout |
An individual requested resource | Milliseconds; applies while the resource is requested. Set it before the initial page.open(). |
The resource stops trying and the page proceeds with other work. PhantomJS can call page.onResourceTimeout. PhantomJS settings API |
| A wrapper or caller’s request timeout | The whole screenshot job or request | Depends on the wrapper; verify its documentation for the unit, default and when the clock starts. | The wrapper may abort the request. For example, the documented screenshot-stream option uses seconds and has a 60-second default. screenshot-stream documentation |
| A post-load delay before capture | Time allowed for page content to settle after load | Depends on the script or wrapper. PhantomJS’s window.setTimeout uses milliseconds; the url-to-screenshot wrapper documents its timeout as a millisecond delay, defaulting to 0 ms. |
The screenshot is captured later; this delay does not extend a resource request’s timeout. url-to-screenshot documentation |
Do not assume two libraries use an option named timeout the same way: one may abort a request, while another may simply wait after load before capturing.
Increase PhantomJS’s per-resource timeout
Set page.settings.resourceTimeout before the first page.open(). The value is in milliseconds, so 30000 means 30 seconds. The PhantomJS API says the setting applies during the initial open; changing it afterward will not extend that open request. See the settings API.

var page = require('webpage').create();
// Milliseconds; configure before the initial page.open call.
page.settings.resourceTimeout = 30000;
page.onResourceTimeout = function (request) {
console.log('Resource timed out: ' + JSON.stringify(request));
};
page.open('https://example.com/', function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.log('Page open failed: ' + status);
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
// Separate wait for asynchronous page content; this does not change
// page.settings.resourceTimeout. The duration here is illustrative.
window.setTimeout(function () {
page.render('screenshot.png');
phantom.exit();
}, 2000);
});
The 2,000 ms delay is an example, not a universal recommendation. The official screenshot example uses page.open() followed by page.render() in its callback and then exits; that pattern does not wait for a particular application condition or asynchronous content beyond the callback. PhantomJS screen-capture example
Wait for JavaScript-rendered content before capturing
If the page reports a successful open but the screenshot is missing content, the resource timeout may not be the problem. The content may be rendered asynchronously after the open callback. Insert a delay before page.render(), or, when your page and script allow it, wait for a meaningful page condition instead of guessing a fixed duration.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- A fixed delay is simple, but can waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones.
- A page-specific condition is more targeted, but depends on identifying a reliable element or state in the page.
- Keep this capture wait separate from
resourceTimeout; it does not make a stalled resource continue loading.
Some wrappers expose a post-load delay under the name timeout. Check that package’s documentation and version before changing it; the same option name can refer to a different clock in another wrapper.
Check wrapper or caller timeouts
If the job ends abruptly, returns a wrapper-specific timeout message, or never reaches your PhantomJS callback, the caller may be stopping the whole request. Inspect the wrapper or service configuration for its timeout value, unit, default and expiry behavior. The screenshot-stream npm documentation, for example, describes a 60-second request timeout measured in seconds; url-to-screenshot describes a millisecond delay before capture instead. Those examples are package-specific, not interchangeable settings.

Troubleshoot a timeout that persists
- Confirm which PhantomJS binary runs. Run
phantomjs --versionand check for multiple installations or a wrapper invoking a different binary. The official CLI documentation covers PhantomJS 2.1.1. PhantomJS command-line documentation - Identify the slow request. Log requests with
page.onResourceRequestedand timeouts withpage.onResourceTimeout; this helps distinguish one stuck dependency from a page-wide failure. Request handler API Resource-timeout handler API - Separate JavaScript errors from network delays. Use
page.onErrorto capture a JavaScript message and stack trace. A script exception is not the same as a resource taking too long. Error handler API - Check HTTPS support if only secure pages fail. Verify the SSL libraries available to the PhantomJS build. PhantomJS troubleshooting
- On Windows, test for proxy delay. PhantomJS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies latency from the default proxy and suggests trying
--proxy-type=none. Troubleshooting guidance - Read the wrapper’s own timeout documentation. Confirm the option’s unit and whether expiry aborts the request or merely delays capture; do not copy a number from a different package.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API if you would rather make a request than configure PhantomJS. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the example below saves a WebP screenshot.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes screenshot, page-info and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Does increasing `resourceTimeout` guarantee a screenshot will be produced?
No. It gives an individual resource longer before PhantomJS stops trying. A wrapper can still abort the overall job, and page-open failures or JavaScript errors require separate diagnosis.
