If Make cannot parse a screenshot API response, first check the HTTP status, Content-Type, and raw response body in the module’s run output. The body may be JSON, an image or PDF file, a redirect, or a JSON error—not necessarily the JSON fields you expected. Then configure the next step for the response the provider actually returns.
Inspect the response before changing the parser
- Run the scenario once, then open the HTTP module’s output bundle or run details.
- Record the HTTP status,
Content-Typeheader, and raw body or file output. - Compare those values with the exact endpoint’s documentation, checking its success response and error response separately.
Make’s HTTP app has a Parse response option. Make describes selecting Yes as a way to structure output data so it is easier to map, and the module must run once before its output fields are available for mapping. Parsing helps expose data in a supported response; it does not turn arbitrary image or PDF bytes into JSON. See Make’s HTTP documentation for the current module details. The current documentation covers HTTP Version 4; if your scenario uses the legacy app, Make says to select Version 3. Labels and settings may differ by version.
Choose the next step based on the body
If the response is JSON
Enable Parse response in the HTTP module and run it again. If valid JSON is still present as raw text rather than mappable fields, try Make’s JSON parsing tools on that raw body. Confirm the body is actually valid JSON and not a quoted string, HTML error page, or JSON surrounded by other text.
If the response is an image or PDF
Pass the response as a file or binary value to a module that accepts that kind of input, or save it using the appropriate file-handling step. A JSON parser cannot extract ordinary JSON fields from raw PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF bytes. Check the provider’s documentation for how it represents a successful capture.

If the response is a redirect or hosted URL
Check whether the provider expects Make to follow a redirect or whether it returns a URL in its response. Configure redirect handling as documented by the provider, or map the returned URL into the next step. Do not assume the response contains the screenshot bytes just because the request succeeded.
Check status and content type for mismatches
A parser error may be a symptom of a failed request. Check the HTTP status before treating the body as a successful screenshot result. A 4xx or 5xx response can contain a JSON error even when a successful capture returns binary bytes; correct the endpoint, authentication, or request parameters before trying to process it as a screenshot.

Make’s standard HTTP module can be configured to return an error for 4xx or 5xx responses. That can be useful for routing failures separately, but inspect the run output and provider documentation to understand the error body. Authentication methods and error formats vary by service.
Content type matters too. Make’s custom-app documentation says automatic response parsing uses the Content-Type header and lists recognized types including text/plain, application/json, application/x-www-form-urlencoded, application/xml, and text/xml. If a provider sends valid JSON with an unexpected media type, automatic parsing may not expose fields as anticipated. Where possible, request the appropriate media type from the provider, or explicitly parse the raw body if it is valid JSON. The custom-app response-type setting described in that documentation is for custom app development; it is not a setting guaranteed to exist in every standard HTTP module. Why screenshot APIs can behave differently
There is no universal screenshot API response format. For example, ScreenshotEngine’s documentation describes raw file bytes for successful captures and JSON for errors, and advises checking HTTP status before using a response as an image. Allscreenshots’ documentation describes binary output by default, base64 data inside JSON when responseType is base64, and a download URL in URL mode. Screenshot API’s documentation describes JSON as its default response and a redirect option to the image or PDF. These are provider-specific contracts, not defaults for every service.
When a provider offers response modes, choose based on what the Make scenario needs: structured metadata, a file to pass downstream, base64 data, or a hosted URL. Also check how errors are represented and whether redirects need to be followed. Use that endpoint’s own API reference rather than assuming another provider’s behavior applies.

Refresh Make’s mapping after changing the response
- Save the HTTP module settings and run it again with a representative request.
- Confirm the new output bundle has the expected fields or file data.
- Refresh or remap downstream modules using the fields from that run.
- Test both a successful capture and a failure path if the provider returns different response shapes for each.
