To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a cloud desktop, run OBS Studio on a cloud virtual machine, add the video as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, and connect OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The VM must stay running, OBS must remain active, and its internet connection must sustain the stream. This setup can keep your computer at home off, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting or automatic recovery after every failure.
Before you start: YouTube access and cloud desktop requirements
Check that your channel can go live
Your channel must be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions. If this is its first live broadcast, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live to create or schedule a broadcast and retrieve its stream settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it, share it in screenshots, or put it in a public script or repository. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Choose a VM that can keep OBS running
You need a cloud desktop with a usable graphical interface, enough storage for the video, and reliable outbound bandwidth. Check the provider’s suspension, restart, and session-disconnect behavior before relying on it. A remote desktop disconnect is not necessarily the same as logging out, but the behavior depends on how the VM and desktop session are configured.

- Make sure the VM will not shut down or suspend while the broadcast is running.
- Confirm the OBS session continues after you disconnect from the remote desktop, if that is your intended operating method.
- Transfer the video to storage available to the VM and confirm the account running OBS can read it.
- Budget for compute, storage, and network usage. VM prices and policies vary by provider and configuration; there is no single cost or restart policy for a “cloud desktop.”
Set up the looping video in OBS
- Open OBS in the cloud desktop. Install or launch OBS Studio in the VM’s graphical session. OBS is free and open source; its Help Portal says it may be used commercially without restrictions.
- Create a scene and add the file. In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Media Source. Choose the video file stored on the VM.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS documents that this setting restarts a file after playback completes and is off by default. Check the preview and audio, then watch through the end of the video to confirm playback returns to the beginning. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- For multiple files, use a playlist source. Add a VLC Video source, create the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
OBS’s loop setting repeats media; it does not supervise the OBS process or guarantee that a broadcast will restart if OBS crashes, the VM reboots, or YouTube ends the event.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live and configure the event in Live Control Room.
- Copy the encoder details. In the broadcast’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS’s Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, or choose the custom/server option and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Labels can vary by OBS version.
- Start the encoder feed. Click Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for YouTube Live Control Room to receive the feed and show its preview.
- Publish only after checking the preview. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears. Check the public watch page and, if practical, confirm playback in a separate viewer session. YouTube’s Live Streaming API overview also describes testing a monitor stream.
Choose output settings and watch stream health
There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every video and VM. The useful target is a stable output the VM’s connection can sustain. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for basic settings; review its choices and confirm the result in YouTube’s preview before publishing.

- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source where practical; unnecessary upscaling increases the work and bandwidth demand without adding source detail.
- Choose a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate, while leaving headroom for connection variation. If OBS shows dropped frames, the connection may be unstable or unable to keep up with the selected bitrate.
- Check the OBS dropped-frame indicator and YouTube’s preview/status during the broadcast. A rising dropped-frame count is a cue to investigate the VM’s outbound connection or reduce output demands.
- Verify that the file’s audio is audible and that the scene remains composed correctly at the loop boundary.
OBS identifies unstable or inadequate upload connectivity as a cause of dropped frames. Lowering output demands or fixing the VM’s network path may help, but the right settings depend on resolution, frame rate, content, and host. The OBS Help Portal explains the dropped-frame indicator and basic configuration guidance.
Plan for long broadcasts, recovery, and YouTube policy
Long sessions and archives
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. Do not assume a single live session longer than that will produce a complete replay. If a replay matters, plan around the stated duration boundary and verify the resulting archive after the event. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

YouTube’s current help guidance also gives limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are platform limits, not recommendations for how many simultaneous broadcasts to run; check the current live-streaming help page when planning multiple feeds.
Continuity requires a recovery plan
A cloud desktop removes the need to leave your home computer on, but it does not make OBS or the VM failure-proof. Decide how you will respond to an OBS crash, VM reboot or suspension, network failure, changed stream key, or YouTube broadcast ending. Standard OBS media looping covers the file ending and restarting; it does not by itself restart a failed OBS process or a finished YouTube event.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions
Only stream material you have the rights to use. A successful technical loop does not establish permission, avoid copyright claims, or guarantee monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and says content should be original and authentic. Its July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible; this does not mean every loop is automatically disallowed. Eligibility depends on the channel and content. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and review the copyright safety checklist before streaming.

| Approach | What it means | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and let the service loop it from the cloud. It is the first option to consider for a hands-off YouTube loop: it runs without your computer at home, streams any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. | It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Check the plan length and storage allowance below. |
| OBS on a cloud desktop | You control the OBS scene and settings while OBS encodes from a remote VM. | You manage the VM, file transfer, outbound bandwidth, OBS session, and recovery plan; the total compute and network cost depends on the provider and configuration. |
| OBS on a local computer | OBS runs on your own computer and sends the encoder feed to YouTube. | The computer and home connection must stay available, so power or network interruptions can stop the feed. |
| Other hosted services | A provider may manage upload, scheduling, and continuous playback without requiring you to maintain OBS on a VM. | Check supported formats, schedule and restart controls, account permissions, rights handling, price, cancellation and export terms, and verified partner status. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams; the listing is not an endorsement of other vendors’ current terms or performance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Quick Recap
Troubleshooting
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm OBS is streaming, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the channel is eligible to go live. A first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Replace an exposed or changed key in OBS.
- The video does not repeat: Open the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. If it is a playlist, check the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist setting and confirm VLC is installed in the version matching OBS’s architecture.
- OBS reports dropped frames: Check the VM’s outbound connection and lower output demands if needed. The counter can indicate instability or insufficient capacity for the selected bitrate.
- The stream stops when you disconnect: Check the VM provider’s desktop-session behavior and confirm OBS continues running after remote disconnect. Adjust session handling or use a setup designed to keep the application active.
- The broadcast ends but OBS keeps running: OBS may still be sending or waiting, but media looping does not automatically recreate a YouTube event. Check Live Control Room and your recovery procedure before starting another broadcast.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to encoder streams under 12 hours. Confirm the event duration and check the archive in YouTube Studio.
