Chrome Extension vs. DevTools for Full-Page Screenshots

Chrome can capture a full-size webpage screenshot without an extension. Learn when DevTools is enough, when an extension may help, and what to check first.

For an occasional full-page screenshot in Chrome, start with DevTools: it has a built-in Capture a full size screenshot command, so you do not need to install an extension. Choose an extension when its toolbar action or listed export and save options suit a frequent workflow. This is a feature-based comparison, not a controlled test of speed or reliability.

Chrome’s built-in full-page screenshot option

Chrome distinguishes a screenshot of the visible viewport from one of the entire page. In DevTools Device Mode, open the More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot to capture the page beyond the area currently on screen. Choose Capture screenshot for the viewport only. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation; menu placement can change between browser versions, so look for the command labels.

Because this option is built into Chrome, it is a straightforward default for occasional captures. That is a convenience recommendation based on the documented workflow, not a measured speed comparison.

When a Chrome extension is more convenient

An extension may make full-page capture more direct from its toolbar or a configured keyboard shortcut, and some list additional export or file-handling options. For example, the GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing advertises full-page capture and PNG, JPG, and PDF output (GoFullPage listing). These are vendor-listed capabilities, not independent verification or a reliability comparison.

Before installing one, check the permissions it requests and its privacy disclosures. Chrome’s debugger API requires an extension to declare the debugger permission and provides access to a restricted subset of DevTools Protocol domains. This is relevant context for extensions that use that API; it does not establish that every screenshot extension uses it.

How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome with DevTools

  1. Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools, then turn on the device toolbar.
  3. Open the device toolbar’s More options menu.
  4. Select Capture a full size screenshot. Use Capture screenshot instead if you only need the currently visible viewport.

The documented command captures content outside the viewport as part of the full-size page image. Exact menu placement may vary by Chrome version.

What extensions may handle differently

Some page structures can complicate full-page capture, but limitations vary by extension and should not be treated as universal Chrome limits. The FullPageShot listing identifies virtualized or infinite-scroll feeds, some editor preview shells, and lazy content inside embedded frames as problem cases for its extension. It also says its extension cannot capture Chrome internal pages or the Chrome Web Store and requires Chrome 118 or later. These are claims and constraints from that listing, not a blanket statement about all extensions (FullPageShot listing).

If a page uses infinite scrolling or loads content only as it is approached, check whether the extension supports that page structure and whether the desired content has loaded before capture. An extension’s listing is the right place to verify its stated export formats, save behavior, and browser requirements.

Which method should you choose?

  • Use DevTools for occasional captures when the built-in full-size command meets your needs.
  • Consider an extension if you capture often and value a toolbar action, shortcut, or export options advertised by that particular extension.
  • Review permissions and privacy information before installing an extension, especially one requesting debugger access.
  • Check page-specific constraints when capturing infinite feeds, embedded content, or browser-internal pages; an extension’s limitations may not apply to other tools.

If you need screenshots through an API rather than Chrome’s capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a page; replace the sample URL with the one you need. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server offers screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
