If YouTube’s live-streaming option is missing, check YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility first. Live streaming requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. After enabling it for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile live streaming—not every way to stream.
Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio
- Confirm the channel. Make sure you are signed in to the correct Google account and have selected the channel where you want to stream. If you manage multiple channels or a Brand Account, eligibility is channel-specific.
- Open Feature eligibility. On a computer, go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility. YouTube says this page shows which features are available; look for the live-streaming feature and its status. YouTube’s Feature eligibility help describes this page.
- Verify the channel if prompted. YouTube requires channel verification for live-stream access. Follow the verification prompt in Studio or use YouTube’s phone verification instructions. For a Brand Account channel, an owner or manager can verify a phone number; for a non-Brand Account channel, only the owner can do so.
- Check for a restriction notice. YouTube requires no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Review Studio notifications and any restriction notice on the channel. If a live-stream restriction is active, wait until it ends and follow YouTube’s instructions; do not try to get around it by streaming from another channel.
- Wait for initial activation. If you have just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours before trying to start your first stream. YouTube’s guidance says first-time activation can take that long.
YouTube Help summarizes the baseline this way: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
Make sure the requirement matches how you want to stream
The subscriber threshold depends on the streaming method. Do not assume that a low subscriber count explains a missing live-streaming option on a computer.
| Method | Eligibility detail relevant to a missing option | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | At least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days, and live-stream activation. | Starting a live stream from the YouTube mobile app. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements. |
| Computer webcam | Verified channel and no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. | Streaming directly from a computer webcam. See YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions. |
| Encoder | Channel eligibility still applies; an encoder does not replace verification or remove a restriction. | Using streaming software or hardware for a more produced stream. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming guidance. |
YouTube also lists mobile and console among its live-streaming methods. Choose a method only after confirming the channel is eligible; buying a webcam or encoder cannot unlock an unavailable account feature.

Check the age requirement
YouTube’s current general guidance sets the minimum age to start a live stream at 16. For streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult, YouTube warns that live chat may be disabled or other features may be temporarily limited. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
If the feature says enabled but the button is still missing
- Recheck that Studio is open for the intended channel, not another channel under the same Google account.
- Confirm the verification process has completed and that any first-activation wait has passed.
- Look for current restriction notices; published requirements do not let an outside guide identify the status of an individual account.
- If Feature eligibility says the feature is enabled, the requirements are met, and the initial activation period has passed, send feedback or contact support through YouTube’s in-product help path. YouTube’s public help does not promise a resolution time for an individual account.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you can go live but want a pre-recorded video to keep your YouTube channel live, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and does not solve channel eligibility or an active restriction. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
