To stream vertically on YouTube, go live from the YouTube mobile app in portrait orientation, or set up a vertical 9:16 output in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before broadcasting. If you use an encoder for a simultaneous horizontal and vertical stream, map the vertical output to its own stream key. Plan the layout before you start: YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has begun.
What you need before going live
YouTube supports livestreaming by mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. The eligibility requirements vary by method, so the 50-subscriber threshold is not a universal requirement for every YouTube livestream.
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- For mobile livestreaming, YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers and a compatible device. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the event.
- For an encoder or Studio workflow, check the current eligibility and setup information in YouTube’s livestreaming requirements.
These requirements and interface details are from YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026; they can change.
How do I go live vertically from a phone?
- Prepare the channel. Verify the channel, confirm it has no livestreaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and meet the mobile requirements. Enable livestreaming early in case activation takes up to 24 hours.
- Open the YouTube app. Tap Create, then Live. Choose portrait orientation for a vertical stream. You can use the app’s private practice mode to rehearse before broadcasting publicly.
- Set up the phone. Charge it, enable Do Not Disturb, and lock rotation in portrait so the image does not turn if you move the device. Check that your upload connection is stable. A stand or tripod can help keep framing steady; it is a convenience, not a YouTube requirement.
- Check picture and sound. Make a test stream, ideally unlisted, and verify the framing and audio on another device. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking network and stream quality.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Confirm the live image is portrait, the subject is framed as intended, and viewers can hear you clearly.
YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” For a longer phone stream, an external battery pack is optional. YouTube’s guidance gives roughly 1% battery use per minute as an estimate, not a guaranteed rate for every phone or stream. How to create vertical and horizontal versions in YouTube Studio
YouTube Live Control Room can provide horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions of the same live stream. The vertical version initially uses a center crop, so check whether it keeps the important subject matter in frame. The two versions share one go-live notification, URL, and chat: Shorts-feed viewers on mobile see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal one.
- Set up the live stream in Live Control Room before going live. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream starts.
- Open the scheduled stream’s layout controls. In the Manage tab, select the scheduled stream and choose Edit layout.
- Choose and adjust the vertical layout. Select center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. Use the canvas to adjust zoom and position. Preview the result to ensure faces, text, and other important details remain visible.
- Review the output before starting. If you set the layout through the editing canvas, YouTube allows you to adjust it while live; establish the format before the broadcast either way.
See YouTube’s instructions for vertical live streams for the current Live Control Room workflow.
Can I stream vertical from a computer or encoder?
Yes. For simultaneous horizontal and vertical versions using a third-party encoder, configure the vertical output in Live Control Room and use RTMP(S). The two formats use separate stream keys, so verify that each output is sent to the matching key.

Treat stream keys like credentials: YouTube describes them as the password and address an encoder uses to send a feed. Do not expose them in a public post or recording. YouTube’s dual-stream setup instructions cover the vertical preview and encoder selection; general key and encoder setup is in YouTube’s encoder livestreaming guide.

Vertical is designed for full-screen mobile viewing and discovery while people browse Shorts. Horizontal remains useful when viewers need a conventional presentation on desktop or TV, or when your production depends on features YouTube lists for horizontal streams rather than the vertical live feed.

Preflight checks for a reliable vertical stream
- Eligibility: Verify the channel and confirm method-specific requirements and restrictions before the broadcast.
- Orientation: Decide on portrait framing, lock phone rotation, or set the Studio canvas layout in advance.
- Power: Start with a charged phone; consider an optional smartphone power bank for a long mobile stream.
- Connection: Test upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; this is a recommendation, not a fixed minimum speed.
- Audio and picture: Test with an unlisted stream and inspect the result on mobile. For an encoder, preview the feed before starting.
- Encoder mapping: Confirm the correct portrait and landscape feeds reach their corresponding stream keys.

Check channel verification, livestreaming restrictions in the last 90 days, and the requirements for your chosen method. Mobile streaming has additional subscriber and compatible-device requirements. If livestreaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.

The vertical version is missing after the stream starts
YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after a stream has begun. Stop and plan the correct format in Live Control Room before starting the next broadcast.
The encoder sends the wrong orientation or no vertical feed
Check that the vertical output is configured as an encoder in the vertical preview’s Auto menu, uses RTMP(S), and is sent to the second stream key. Confirm the horizontal output uses its own corresponding key, then inspect both previews before going live.
The stream stutters or drops
Check upload stability and bitrate, and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Reduce the stream’s demands if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again before broadcasting publicly.
