You can turn a Twitch clip into a YouTube Short by creating and framing the clip in Twitch, then either sharing it directly to YouTube Shorts or downloading it and uploading it yourself. Twitch clips are limited to 60 seconds; YouTube’s separate Shorts limit is up to three minutes for square or vertical videos, so the longer YouTube limit does not extend a Twitch-created clip.
Choose the right route
| Route | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Twitch direct share | The clip has a YouTube Shorts sharing option and you want the quickest handoff. | Availability depends on clip and account settings. Twitch may prefill recommended title and description text, which you can replace. [Twitch Help] |
| Download, then upload | You want to review the exported portrait file or control YouTube’s upload details yourself. | If Twitch does not offer a portrait download, create and save the portrait layout first, then allow it to render. [Twitch Help] [Twitch Help] |
| YouTube Studio Clips and Shorts | Your broadcast or source video is already on YouTube. | This creates a Short from the YouTube video; it is not an import of a Twitch clip file. [YouTube Help] |
There is no documented performance advantage for one route over another. Choose based on whether direct sharing is available, how much control you want over the file and metadata, and where the source video lives.

Create and frame the clip in Twitch
- Open the live stream or past broadcast and launch Twitch’s Clip Creator.
- Select the moment you want. Twitch’s clip creator allows a clip of up to 60 seconds.
- Choose landscape (16:9) or portrait (9:16). For a Short, select portrait and inspect Twitch’s suggested framing. You can adjust or dismiss the suggestion rather than relying on it to compose every scene correctly.
- In portrait editing, choose a stacked or full layout. Adjust the crop so the important gameplay and camera content remain visible, then preview it.
- Add a title and publish or save the clip. If you plan to upload a portrait file, make sure the portrait version is applied and saved so Twitch can render it. [Twitch Help]
Share the Twitch clip directly to YouTube Shorts
- Open Twitch’s Clips Manager and select the clip.
- Use the sharing controls and choose YouTube Shorts if the option appears for that clip and account.
- Review the suggested title and description; edit them to accurately describe the moment.
- Complete YouTube’s publishing details, including visibility and audience settings, then publish.
Sharing options vary with settings and account context. A channel owner may see options that a viewer does not, and sharing another creator’s clip depends on that streamer allowing it. The presence of an export or share option does not grant rights to copyrighted material in the clip. [Twitch Help]
Download the portrait clip and upload it yourself
Download from Twitch
- In Clips Manager, find the clip and choose the portrait download if it is available.
- If portrait download is missing, return to the clip editor, apply and save a portrait layout, then wait for Twitch to render it before checking again.
- Preview the downloaded file. Confirm that the crop keeps the key action on screen and that the video and audio are the intended versions.
Upload on a computer
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Upload videos.
- Select the downloaded square or vertical file. YouTube classifies qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes as Shorts.
- Complete the title, visibility, and audience details; check the preview and publish when ready. [YouTube Help]
Upload in the YouTube app
- Start an upload in the YouTube app and select a square or vertical video.
- Use the editor to trim if needed. YouTube’s mobile guidance supports trimming videos up to three minutes.
- Enter the title, privacy, and audience settings, then publish. [YouTube Help]
The three-minute YouTube limit applies to qualifying Shorts uploads, not Twitch’s Clip Creator. A Twitch-created clip begins with Twitch’s limit of up to 60 seconds; the longer YouTube allowance is relevant when you upload a longer eligible source or edit outside Twitch. Make a Short from a video already on YouTube
If your broadcast has already been uploaded to YouTube, use YouTube Studio’s separate Clips and Shorts workflow instead of exporting a Twitch clip file.
- In YouTube Studio, open the eligible source video and choose Clips and Shorts.
- Select a segment using transcript text, timestamps, or an available AI suggestion.
- Preview the selection and create a draft.
- Complete the Short’s upload details and publish it. In eligible circumstances, YouTube automatically links the original source video as a related video. [YouTube Help]
Check copyright and upload details before publishing
- Confirm rights to the video and audio. Twitch prohibits sharing copyrighted material you do not own or have permission to share; examples include another artist’s songs and background music. A clip being available in Twitch does not clear every element for use on YouTube. [Twitch Community Guidelines]
- Check game and music permissions. Make sure your intended use is allowed by the relevant rights holders; do not assume that live-stream use automatically authorizes a separately published Short.
- Understand YouTube’s copyright consequences. Externally created Shorts using protected material need approval for use and may receive a Content ID claim. A valid takedown can remove a Short and lead to a copyright strike. [YouTube Help]
- Set audience and privacy deliberately. Complete YouTube’s title, visibility or privacy, and audience fields rather than treating the transfer from Twitch as a completed YouTube upload. [YouTube Help]
Fix common problems
YouTube Shorts is missing from Twitch’s share options
The option depends on the clip and account settings. Check that you are in Clips Manager and that the channel or clip permits the relevant sharing action. If it remains unavailable, download the portrait version and upload it in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app. [Twitch Help]

The clip is longer than 60 seconds
Twitch’s Clip Creator supports clips up to 60 seconds. The YouTube allowance of up to three minutes does not change that Twitch limit. To use a longer segment, work from an eligible longer source video or edit the broadcast outside Twitch, then upload a qualifying square or vertical video to YouTube. [Twitch Help] [YouTube Help]
The upload draws a claim or is removed
Review the rights for every video and audio element, especially music. A Twitch export is not proof of YouTube clearance. If YouTube identifies protected material, consult the claim or removal details and only dispute it when you have a valid basis. [YouTube Help]
