To moderate YouTube Live Chat, prepare chat filters and trusted moderators in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, then use message actions and participation controls while you broadcast. Afterward, you can turn off chat replay or review chat history. Exact controls can vary by device and stream type, so confirm the options shown for your stream before it starts.
Before you go live: prepare chat controls
Open the stream’s live chat controls in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room and check which options are available for your device and stream type. YouTube’s live chat moderation guide describes these controls:
- Potentially inappropriate messages held for review: YouTube may hold messages its system identifies. An owner or managing moderator can show or hide them; if nobody acts, they remain hidden. This is a review aid, not a guarantee that every harmful message will be caught. YouTube cautions, “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.”
- Blocked words: Add terms you want filtered. Messages containing or closely matching those terms can be blocked from live chat.
- Slow mode: Add a delay between messages from each user. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are not subject to this limit.
- Subscriber-only chat: Limit messages to subscribers, optionally requiring a minimum subscription duration. Viewers are told that the restriction is active and how long they must have been subscribed. It can be used alongside slow mode.
- Members-only chat: Limit messages to channel members. You cannot enable members-only chat and subscriber-only chat at the same time.
Choose the least restrictive control that fits
As a practical escalation ladder, begin with proportionate filters and a trusted moderator. If the volume becomes difficult to follow, add slow mode. If the stream needs a narrower audience, consider subscriber-only or members-only chat. For an individual disruptive user, use a timeout or hide them from the channel. If you cannot manage the conversation, turn chat off. This is a practical approach, not a sequence YouTube requires.
Appoint moderators and agree on expectations
Choose people you trust and agree beforehand on what warrants removing a message, issuing a timeout, hiding a user, or escalating to you. YouTube does not prescribe a moderator-to-viewer ratio, so plan around the pace and subject of your own chat rather than a universal number.

YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. The moderator role guidance describes their capabilities:
| Role | What the role can do | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard moderator | Inspect a participant’s public channel; remove a message; put a user in timeout; hide a user from the channel; review held messages. | Does not have the additional settings and moderator-management powers listed for managing moderators. |
| Managing moderator | Do standard moderation tasks and change settings such as chat availability, participant mode, message delay, and blocked words; manage standard moderators or approved users. | Cannot access YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, and cannot assign other managing moderators. |
YouTube’s Android Help page lists timeout intervals from 10 seconds up to 24 hours. Check the actions and duration choices available in your own interface.

While streaming: respond to messages and changing volume
Use message actions for individual problems
Select a message to open its moderation actions. Remove a message when the content should disappear from chat. A timeout temporarily prevents that user from sending messages. Hiding a user makes their chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers without notifying them, according to YouTube’s moderator guidance.
Review held messages as a queue
Check messages held for review and choose whether to show or hide them. Unreviewed held messages stay hidden. Because the system can miss harmful content or hold messages that merit a human decision, keep a moderator watching the conversation rather than relying on filtering alone.

Adjust controls if chat becomes difficult to manage
A managing moderator can change participant mode or message delay, or turn live chat off, according to YouTube’s role guidance. If those controls are needed and no managing moderator is available, the channel owner should use the relevant controls in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
Keep in mind that YouTube sets viewer-side limits, not adjustable creator settings: viewers can send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, and each message can be up to 200 characters. Live chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players, according to YouTube’s viewer guidance.

After the broadcast: manage replay and history
Live chat replay is on by default for stream archives. To disable it, open the archived video’s customization settings and turn off chat replay; the exact path or label may vary in the current interface. Viewers can inspect chats they participated in through Live chat history.
If you delete a Super Chat message after the stream, it does not result in a refund. Also, a video set to a “made for kids” audience does not have live chat or live chat replay available, among other disabled features; in that case there is no live chat to moderate. See YouTube’s made-for-kids feature guidance.
