For most desktop creators, OBS Studio is the best place to start streaming on Kick: Kick provides setup instructions for it, and OBS is free, open source, and flexible. Choose Streamlabs Desktop instead if you prefer an integrated workflow with built-in alerts, widgets, and overlays. Kick also lists XSplit and MELD as supported applications, but its available setup information does not establish a feature or price winner among them.
Choose software for the way you want to produce your stream

Kick’s Help Center guide dated May 22, 2026 lists OBS, XSplit, Streamlabs Desktop, and MELD among supported applications. That list is not an exhaustive ranking. There is no evidence here of a universal performance winner: choose based on the production controls and integrated tools you actually need, then confirm that your computer and network can handle your chosen settings.

Check system requirements before installing
Requirements differ by product and can change. Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage as minimum requirements. OBS’s current download page lists Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux. Check each vendor’s current download page for your operating system before installing.
Connect OBS Studio to Kick
- Get the server URL and stream key. Find the streaming details in your Kick dashboard. Treat the key like a password: Kick warns that anyone who has it can broadcast to your channel.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose Custom…, and enter the server URL and stream key from the dashboard.
- Set an encoder configuration Kick accepts. Open OBS’s output and video settings and use the limits below as ceilings, not targets you must always reach. The right bitrate depends on your available upload capacity and encoder.
- Start the broadcast. Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and select Start Streaming. Kick says the VOD is saved to your channel page after you stop streaming.
Connect Streamlabs Desktop to Kick
- Open the Stream tab in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Connect your Kick account using the account-connection workflow shown in the application.
- Configure the encoder within Kick’s published limits, then start streaming from Streamlabs Desktop.
Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide lists minimum requirements of Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB RAM, and 10 GB storage. Check the current vendor page in case requirements or the connection workflow have changed.

Use settings within Kick’s published limits
Kick’s connection troubleshooting guide dated May 6, 2026 publishes these encoder constraints. They are maximums and compatibility requirements, not a promise that a particular computer, encoder, or internet connection can sustain the highest setting.

For a Mac, Kick specifically says to use x264 to enable CBR. If your setup struggles, reduce the workload rather than treating every maximum as a recommended setting: lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until your encoder and connection can sustain a stable stream. The official guidance does not prescribe one universal bitrate for every resolution and connection.

Fix common connection problems
- The encoder will not connect: Update OBS or Streamlabs, confirm that the server URL and current stream key are correct, and check whether your computer or network is blocking the connection.
- Kick rejects the stream or it fails to start: Verify that the encoder uses x264 or H.264 with CBR, not H.265 or VBR, and that bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and audio remain within Kick’s published limits.
- You reset the stream key: Replace the old key in the encoder with the newly issued one. Resetting the key invalidates the saved old key.
- You suspect someone else has your key: Reset it in the Kick dashboard and update the encoder. Do not share or publish the key.
