Its flexibility takes setup: you choose sources, audio routing, canvas and output dimensions, and recording settings. For a basic tutorial, OBS’s help portal points new users toward Simple output mode and presets.
Which open-source recorder fits your YouTube workflow?
| Software | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | A reusable setup with scenes, multiple capture sources, microphone controls, and recording or streaming in one application. | Free and open-source; available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official site lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer; check the current download page for requirements and Linux installation guidance. OBS official site · OBS project repository |
| ShareX | Windows users who want quick, configurable area captures and automation. | The project describes screen-area capture, video or GIF recording, hotkeys, and automated post-capture actions. It is a Windows application, not a cross-platform alternative. ShareX project |
| Kdenlive | Creators who want screen capture inside an editing workflow. | Its 26.08 manual documents ScreenGrab capture through FFmpeg. The manual cautions that screen capture with the “x246-with-audio” setting may crash, so check the guidance and capture settings before relying on it. Kdenlive audio capture manual |
These are different kinds of tools, not a measured performance ranking. Choose based on your operating system, desired capture sources, audio controls, and whether recording or editing is the main job. The sources do not establish which is easiest or fastest on every computer.
Why OBS is the best general-purpose choice
OBS combines screen and application capture with scene composition, audio controls, recording, and streaming. That range makes it a practical choice if you expect your recording setup to grow—for example, from a single screen and narration track to multiple sources or a repeatable scene layout. OBS describes itself as free and open-source recording and live-streaming software, and its project repository lists capture, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming among its core functions.
The trade-off is the number of decisions at setup. You need to select the right capture source, microphone and system audio, output dimensions, and recording format. If you want only a quick region capture on Windows, ShareX may be more direct; if you already edit in Kdenlive, its capture capability may fit your workflow better.

Set up an OBS recording for a YouTube video
OBS labels and available options can change between releases and vary with operating system and hardware. Use these steps as a workflow, and verify current requirements on the official OBS site.
- Install OBS for your operating system. Download it from the official site and check the requirements for your version of Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Create a scene and add capture sources. Add the display or application you want to show, then arrange any additional visual sources. Preview the scene so menus, dialogs, or other windows do not obscure the content.
- Choose and check your audio devices. Select the microphone you will narrate into and, if needed, the system audio source. Watch OBS’s audio meters while speaking and playing a sound. A built-in microphone can be enough to begin; a separate USB microphone is optional, not a requirement.
- Set the canvas and output dimensions. Match the recording to the intended video layout and the content you are capturing. OBS’s available settings depend on the installation; avoid choosing dimensions or quality settings your computer cannot handle reliably.
- Choose a recording format and quality. OBS recommends MKV for resilience if recording stops unexpectedly. If your editing or upload workflow needs MP4, OBS can remux an MKV recording to MP4 after capture. See the format decision below before a long recording.
- Make a short test recording. Check that the picture is legible, narration and system audio are present at sensible levels, and the resulting file works in your editor. This catches source, routing, and compatibility problems before you record a full lesson.
- Record, review, then upload. Start recording in OBS, check the result before publishing, and upload the finished video through YouTube Studio. Recording locally is separate from going live: you do not need a YouTube stream key to make an ordinary recorded video.
Choose a recording format and quality deliberately
MKV for recovery; remux to MP4 when needed
OBS’s recording guide recommends MKV because an unexpected stop does not corrupt the whole recording. Its formats guide says MKV supports OBS encoder combinations and is recoverable after an interrupted recording. MP4 and MOV generally work better with editing software and upload workflows, but a recording may be unrecoverable if writing is interrupted. That makes this a reliability-versus-compatibility choice, not a universal best format.

Balance quality against file size and computer load
OBS documents high-quality, indistinguishable-quality, lossless, and same-as-stream recording presets. Higher quality can mean larger files and greater resource demands; lossless recordings can be especially large and may affect performance. The appropriate setting depends on your material, available storage, editing workflow, and hardware. A short test on your own setup is more useful than assuming one preset suits every computer. Keep the recording usable and the channel safe
- Check audio and picture before the real session. Listen to a short sample with headphones and confirm that the screen content is readable at the size viewers will see it.
- Make sure you have rights to what you record and publish. Screen capture does not grant permission to reuse music, footage, software demonstrations, or other copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance before publishing third-party content.
- Make the video meaningfully yours. A recording that repackages other people’s material without sufficient original contribution may raise reused-content concerns for monetization. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions; check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies.
- Keep an eye on file size and storage. High-quality and lossless settings can produce large files. Leave enough disk space for the recording and any remuxed or edited copy.
Troubleshoot common OBS recording problems
| Symptom | Likely place to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Recording has no narration | Microphone selection or audio routing. | Confirm the intended microphone is selected and that its meter moves while you speak; make a short test clip and listen back. |
| Recording has no system sound | System-audio source or routing. | Check that the intended audio source is enabled and active, then verify playback in a test recording. |
| Screen is missing or shows the wrong window | Capture source or selected display/application. | Check the source in the scene and confirm that the preview shows the content you intend to record. |
| File will not open after an interrupted recording | Container choice. | For future sessions, consider recording to MKV and remuxing to MP4 when compatibility requires it. A damaged file is not guaranteed to be recoverable. |
| File is unexpectedly large or recording feels demanding | Recording quality and encoder workload. | Review the quality preset, reduce demands if necessary, and make another short test before a long take. |
| Kdenlive screen capture crashes with audio | The manual flags the “x246-with-audio” capture setting as a possible cause. | Consult the Kdenlive manual and avoid relying on that setting without testing your configuration. |
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS and the other recorders above make videos on your computer; they are not a way to leave a pre-recorded YouTube livestream running after you shut that computer down. If your next goal is a continuous YouTube channel stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day.
