You can turn your own eligible public YouTube video into a Short in the YouTube mobile app: open its watch page, tap Remix > Edit into a Short, select up to 60 seconds, then add finishing touches and upload. In YouTube Studio, a separate Clips and Shorts tool lets you select a segment using transcript text or a timeline. To make a Short from someone else’s video, use Remix only when that source is eligible and remixing is allowed.

YouTube’s general Shorts guidance allows Shorts up to three minutes, and vertical videos can be uploaded from a computer or smartphone. That general format limit is different from the mobile Edit into a Short tool’s documented selection of up to 60 seconds. Check the current in-app instructions if labels or limits have changed.

Make a Short from your own video in the YouTube mobile app
- Open the YouTube mobile app and go to the watch page of a public long-form video you uploaded.
- Tap Remix, then tap Edit into a Short.
- Choose the section you want, up to 60 seconds, then tap Next.
- Add any available creative touches, such as text or filters, and finish the upload flow.
YouTube says a Short made from your video links back to the original video, helping viewers discover it. The mobile tool is limited to public long-form videos you uploaded: private and unlisted videos, as well as videos with third-party copyright claims, cannot be used this way. You also cannot add music or other sounds from YouTube’s Audio Library within this own-video workflow.

If “Edit into a Short” is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that uploaded the video and that the video is public and long-form.
- In YouTube Studio, review the video’s Shorts remixing setting and whether sampling is allowed.
- Check whether a third-party copyright claim or another eligibility restriction applies.
- Try the separate Clips and Shorts workflow in Studio if the video is eligible there.
Use YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts tool
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Videos.
- Select the video, then choose Clips and Shorts and start creating a Short.
- Choose a section by selecting transcript text or by setting its start and end points in the timeline editor.
- Adjust the selection, then create the Short and complete the publishing flow.
Studio may offer AI-powered suggestions and an AI-generated outline, but those features are available only in selected countries and languages. The listed countries are Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The listed languages are English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Availability of these AI features does not change the basic transcript- or timeline-selection workflow.

Remix another creator’s video or Short
- In the YouTube mobile app, open an eligible source video or Short.
- Tap Remix and choose an option that is actually offered for that source, such as Cut, Green Screen, Collab, or Use this sound.
- Make the Short using the selected source material and follow the app’s upload steps.
The available options depend on the source and its eligibility. A creator can restrict remixing, and privacy settings or copyright restrictions can make a source unavailable. YouTube attributes remixed audio or video to its original source, but attribution is not permission to use material in every context and does not remove other rights restrictions. Music licensing can limit use or cause a block.
Uploading a Short made elsewhere with protected material can lead to a Content ID claim or removal after a valid copyright takedown. Use material you own or have permission to use, or rely on an available YouTube remix option while respecting its limits. YouTube’s remix tools do not make every video available or guarantee that a particular use is rights-cleared.

Upload a Short you edited separately
If you prepared a vertical video outside YouTube, you can upload it from a computer or smartphone. On desktop, choose Create > Upload videos, select the video file, complete the draft details, and publish when ready. The separate upload workflow is useful when you need editing controls beyond the native extraction tools; external editing software is optional, not required to make a Short.

Common problems and what to check
- The source video does not appear in Edit into a Short: verify it is your own public long-form video, then check the Shorts remixing or sampling setting and whether a third-party copyright claim applies.
- You cannot select more than 60 seconds in Edit into a Short: that tool’s documented selection limit is up to 60 seconds. The general Shorts format guidance of up to three minutes is not the same limit.
- A remix option is missing: options vary by source. The creator may have restricted remixing, or privacy and copyright restrictions may make the content ineligible.
- Music is blocked or unavailable: music licensing can restrict use. The own-video Edit into a Short workflow does not let you add Audio Library sounds; use only audio available for the workflow and appropriate to your rights and use.
- AI suggestions do not appear in Studio: the AI features have country and language limits. You can still use the documented transcript or timeline selection where available.
- A separately edited upload receives a claim or is removed: review the material’s rights and the notice YouTube provides. A valid copyright takedown can lead to removal; using editing software does not bypass copyright rules.
