To create a PDF invoice from HTML, put the invoice data into an HTML template, style it for printing with CSS, then render the page with a browser PDF API such as Puppeteer. Keep calculations in your application, not in the template, and test the finished PDF with realistic invoice data and page breaks. A PDF is a visual document; it does not automatically meet structured e-invoicing requirements.
Build the invoice from data, not from the PDF
Store authoritative values in your application: seller and buyer details, invoice number and date, line items, quantities, unit prices, applicable tax values, totals, payment instructions, and any fields required for the transaction. The required fields depend on jurisdiction and transaction type, so verify local requirements rather than relying on a universal checklist.
Render those values into a semantic HTML document. Use a clear reading order and a table for line items. Treat customer- or user-supplied values as untrusted: escape or safely encode them before inserting them into HTML. Calculate and verify amounts in application code; the renderer should display the results, not determine them.
Example invoice template
This minimal template shows the structure. In a real application, populate it from validated invoice data and escape dynamic values using the HTML templating system appropriate to your stack.

</html>Prepare the page for print
Screen layouts do not necessarily make good print layouts. CSS print media rules let you hide navigation and interactive controls, adjust spacing and typography, and tune the invoice for paper output. The MDN printing guide covers the print media type and the @page rule for page dimensions, orientation, and margins.
- Set a paper size and margins deliberately. Use a size appropriate for the recipients and relevant jurisdiction; do not assume one regional default fits every customer.
- Decide whether backgrounds and brand colors belong in the PDF. Browser print output may alter colors; Puppeteer documents
-webkit-print-color-adjustfor requesting exact colors. - Check long descriptions, many line items, totals near page boundaries, and headers or footers in the rendered PDF. CSS break controls can express intent, but inspect actual output for your renderer and template.
- Load fonts, logos, and other assets from reliable locations and ensure they have finished loading before capture.
Render the HTML to PDF with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() renders using print CSS by default. Its options include paper format, margins, headers and footers, background printing, page ranges, and whether CSS page sizing takes precedence. It also waits for document.fonts.ready by default. Runnable Node.js example
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Save the template as invoice.html, then run this script in an environment where Puppeteer’s browser can run:

If the invoice uses remote assets or a page that continues making network requests, adjust the navigation readiness strategy to match the page and explicitly wait for the data and assets your document needs. Do not treat “network idle” alone as proof that application data has finished loading.

Do not assume hosted and browser-managed rendering produce identical output or performance. Compare them with the actual template, assets, deployment environment, and data-handling requirements. Avoid sending customer invoice data to a third-party service unless your organization’s privacy and security requirements permit it.

- Long seller and buyer names, multi-line addresses, and long descriptions.
- Many line items, including rows that fall near page breaks.
- Tax, discount, shipping, and adjustment rows where applicable.
- Currency symbols, decimal precision, negative values or credits, and locale-specific formatting.
- Invoices that span pages, ensuring totals and payment instructions remain visible and correctly associated with the invoice.
- Fonts, logos, links, text selection, page size, margins, and backgrounds in the PDF reader your recipients are likely to use.
Verify arithmetic independently in application code, then check that the displayed subtotal, adjustments, tax, and total match those values. Store, deliver, and attach the generated file through the application’s normal document-handling controls.
A PDF invoice is not automatically an e-invoice
A PDF generated from HTML is a visual document. In the context of Directive 2014/55/EU, the European Commission defines an eInvoice as invoice data issued, transmitted, and received in a structured format that supports automatic electronic processing; its guidance says unstructured PDF invoices and HTML invoices are not eInvoices under that definition. The Commission’s standards guidance describes EN 16931’s semantic data model as defining core invoice business terms, their meanings, and rules for their use. If a customer, procurement process, or local law requires structured e-invoicing, generate the required structured payload and transmission alongside or instead of the human-readable PDF as applicable. The obligation and accepted format depend on jurisdiction and use case; verify the relevant current requirements locally.

Can I use the same HTML template to show an invoice in the app and generate its PDF?
Yes. Keep the invoice data and template shared, then use screen and print styles to adapt presentation. Validate both outputs because screen layout and print pagination have different constraints.
Does creating a PDF from HTML make an invoice legally compliant?
No universal compliance conclusion follows from the file format. Required fields, tax treatment, archiving, and any structured e-invoice obligations depend on the jurisdiction and transaction.
