Start a remote browser session with Selenium Grid, navigate to the page, and call Selenium Java’s TakesScreenshot interface. The standard screenshot represents the current browsing context—not necessarily the entire document—and an OutputType.FILE result is temporary, so copy it to a durable location before the Java process exits.
What you need
- Java 11 or higher, browsers, and browser drivers, as listed in Selenium’s getting-started guide.
- A running Selenium Grid and its URL as reachable from the Java test process.
- Selenium Java dependencies in your project, plus Apache Commons IO if you use the file-copy example below.
For a local Standalone Grid, Selenium’s guide starts the server with java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone; the default endpoint is http://localhost:4444. For a containerized or remote Grid, use the endpoint the client machine can reach. Grid routes WebDriver commands from the client to a browser on a remote computer, enabling remote and parallel browser testing. See the Selenium Grid overview.
Capture and save a screenshot
Create a RemoteWebDriver using the Grid URL and browser options, navigate to the target, then request a screenshot. This example follows Selenium’s documented Java pattern; it is illustrative and is not a claim that this exact program has been executed.
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.net.URL;
import org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils;
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.RemoteWebDriver;
public class GridScreenshot {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
URL gridUrl = new URL("http://localhost:4444");
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
WebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(gridUrl, options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
File temporaryScreenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
FileUtils.copyFile(temporaryScreenshot, new File("screenshot.png"));
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The RemoteWebDriver constructor takes the Grid address and browser options; the options tell the remote session which browser to launch. Replace the example URL with your page and the Grid URL with the address available to your test client. See Selenium’s remote WebDriver documentation.

The official screenshot call is ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE). Selenium describes it as capturing the screenshot for the current browsing context. OutputType.FILE returns a temporary file that the Java API says will be deleted when the JVM exits, so copy it before shutdown. The example uses Apache Commons IO’s FileUtils.copyFile; use your project’s preferred file I/O method if you do not use that library. See Selenium’s screenshot documentation and the Java OutputType API.
Use bytes or Base64 instead
If your workflow does not need a temporary file, request the screenshot as raw bytes or Base64 data. Write the bytes to your desired destination, or pass the encoded value to the part of your application that consumes it.

byte[] imageBytes = ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.BYTES);
String imageBase64 = ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.BASE64);
These are alternative output representations; choose one rather than making multiple screenshot calls when you only need one image.
Know what the screenshot includes
The generic WebDriver screenshot operation captures the current browsing context. Do not assume it produces a reliable full-document, top-to-bottom image. If you need an image of one element, Selenium documents a separate element screenshot operation. Full-page capture behavior can depend on the browser and API path, so verify the specific method and browser support you intend to use rather than treating it as a property of the generic call.

Common problems and fixes
- Could not connect to Grid: Check that the server is running and that the URL is reachable from the Java test runner. A hostname that works inside a Grid container may not resolve from the host running the test.
- Session creation fails or the wrong browser starts: Pass browser options, such as
ChromeOptions, toRemoteWebDriverand confirm the Grid can provide that browser. - The screenshot file disappears: An
OutputType.FILEresult is temporary. Copy it to a durable path while the JVM is running, or retrieve bytes and persist them using your normal I/O workflow. - The saved file is not on the browser node: The example copies the returned temporary file on the Java client process’s filesystem. It is not a browser-node download-directory operation.
- The image omits content farther down the page: The standard operation is for the current browsing context; it does not by itself establish full-page capture. Use a verified browser-specific full-page method if that is a requirement.
- A Grid session remains allocated after an error: Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so the client attempts to close the remote session whether navigation or saving succeeds or fails.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a screenshot rather than a Selenium Grid session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call API. Its consent handling can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Java example take a full-page screenshot?
No. The generic WebDriver screenshot call captures the current browsing context; full-page behavior requires a verified browser-specific method.
