APITemplate.io also documents a REST POST route for applications that prefer to send structured data to a template.
How the Direct URL method works
Direct URL turns a reusable APITemplate.io image template into a GET-style image URL. Query parameters set properties on named template elements, so the same layout can produce different page previews. APITemplate.io says each page can have a unique preview image by changing the query parameters. See the Direct URL Image Generation documentation.

The basic workflow is: build the template, configure its Direct URL authorization code, generate a URL with the values for a particular page, then place that URL in that page’s Open Graph metadata.

- Create the template. In APITemplate.io, create an image template in the visual editor. Add the background, headline, images, and other design elements you need. Set the dimensions using a preset or custom size. Give elements that will change descriptive names, such as
headlineandbackground. The Image Template Editor documentation covers the editor and template workflow. - Enable Direct URL. Open the template’s Direct URL tab, create an auth code, set its quota and expiration, and save the configuration. The tab’s URL-generation aid can show available element properties.
- Build the image URL. Use the current documented endpoint and provide the template ID, auth code, and any element-property values your template needs.
- Add the URL to your page. Put the generated URL in an
og:imagemeta tag in that page’s HTML head, using your site’s normal metadata mechanism. - Inspect the published result. Check the page and image using the sharing preview or debugging tool for the social platform you care about.
Build a Direct URL for a page
The documented pattern is:
https://rest.apitemplate.io/v2/create-image-url/{template_id}?auth={auth_code}&{element.property}={value}

For example, if your template has a text element named headline, the query parameter headline.text sets its text. An image element can use a property such as background.src. Replace the example values below with your template ID, the auth code configured for that template, and the page’s content:

Encode values for use in a URL. Spaces may be represented as %20 or, in form-style query encoding, +; for instance, the docs show headline.text=Summer+Sale. Encode reserved characters in titles and image URLs rather than inserting them raw, or they may be interpreted as query-string syntax. Include a parameter for each dynamic property your design needs.

Use the current rest.apitemplate.io URL shown in the documentation. An older official post describes a prior API host; do not copy its older host into a new implementation. The current Direct URL guide is the reference for the present pattern.
Add the generated image to Open Graph metadata
Set the page’s og:image content to the generated Direct URL. A minimal example is:

The HTML source uses & to encode the ampersand between query parameters. Your framework or metadata library may handle this escaping when it renders the tag; inspect the final HTML head to confirm the output is valid and that the content value is the intended image URL. Generate a separate URL for each page by supplying that page’s text and image values.

APITemplate.io says generated images are cached and a new image is generated when query parameters change or the template is updated. Its reviewed documentation does not specify a cache lifetime. Social platforms also control their own fetching and caching behavior, so a changed template or URL is not proof that every platform has refreshed a previously fetched preview. Validate the rendered image and the page metadata with the target platform’s current sharing preview tool.

The REST route and template editor are described in the official editor documentation; the provider’s first-image guide covers onboarding and integrations. These are different integration patterns, not evidence that one is universally faster or less expensive.
Common problems and fixes
- The URL does not generate the expected image: Confirm the template ID, auth code, and endpoint against the template’s Direct URL tab. Check that every query parameter uses the exact element name and property exposed by the editor.
- Text or image values are truncated or malformed: URL-encode the parameter value, especially spaces, ampersands, question marks, and other reserved characters. An unencoded ampersand can start a new query parameter instead of remaining part of the value.
- A page shows an old preview: Confirm the page outputs the intended current
og:imageURL, then use the target platform’s sharing preview/debugger to inspect what it fetched. APITemplate.io documents image caching but gives no fixed cache duration; platform refresh behavior is separate. - The generated design is wrong despite a valid URL: Check the template’s element names, property types, dimensions, and values in the visual editor. The Direct URL tab’s generator can help identify supported properties.
- The image appears in a browser but not in a social share: Verify the final page HTML includes the
og:imagetag and that its content points to the intended generated image URL. Check the platform’s current crawler and image requirements; the reviewed APITemplate.io pages do not establish platform-specific requirements or guaranteed refresh times.
