To capture dynamic content reliably, wait for the application to reach the state you want, then take the screenshot. A requestAnimationFrame (rAF) callback runs before a browser repaint; it is not a signal that network requests, fonts, images, or application updates have finished. For repeatable Playwright snapshots, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). For a specific animation moment, synchronize with the app’s own state and call page.screenshot().
Why requestAnimationFrame is not a screenshot-ready signal
window.requestAnimationFrame() asks the browser to run a callback before its next repaint. It is one-shot: an animation must request another frame to continue. Its cadence generally follows the display refresh rate, and browsers usually pause callbacks in hidden tabs and iframes. These properties make rAF useful for coordinating visual updates, but they do not make it a general page-readiness event. See MDN’s requestAnimationFrame documentation.
A callback—or an arbitrary wait of one or two frames—cannot establish that asynchronous data has arrived or that a chart, image, or other component has reached the state you need. Define that state explicitly, such as a chart-ready flag or an animation progress value, and wait for it. If a final update still needs to pass through the rendering cycle, an additional rAF can be useful after the state condition is met.
Use Playwright for a specific state or a stable snapshot
Capture after the application reaches a known state
Use a real application signal rather than guessing with a timeout. This example assumes the page sets window.chartReady to true only after the desired chart data and rendering state are ready:

The rAF wait is an optional rendering-cycle step, not a substitute for the readiness predicate. If you need an exact point in an animation, have the application expose or set that progress value, wait until it is reached, and then capture.
Compare a stable visual-regression snapshot

This is useful for visual regression, but it is not a way to select a particular point in an animation that never settles. Set the desired application state first, or control or mask the changing region. See the Playwright PageAssertions API.

Be aware that screenshot options differ by API. The animations option for page.screenshot() defaults to allowing animation, while screenshot assertions document disabled animation as their default. Disabling animations can stabilize CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations, but it changes their timing and state; it does not freeze a JavaScript rAF animation at a chosen progress value. With animations disabled, finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled to their initial state and replayed after capture. Check the Playwright Page API for the installed version’s options.

For canvas-only manual frame capture, canvas.captureStream(0) disables automatic frame capture; call requestFrame() on the returned track to request a frame:

track.requestFrame();This produces a video stream, not a general DOM screenshot. MDN documents a SecurityError when the canvas is not origin-clean. Check canvas.captureStream() and CanvasCaptureMediaStreamTrack.requestFrame() along with target-browser compatibility.
The Screen Capture API asks the user to choose a surface. html2canvas reconstructs an image from DOM information and documents rendering and cross-origin constraints, so its output can differ from a literal browser screenshot.

Troubleshooting missed or inconsistent captures
- The screenshot catches an intermediate chart or animation state: wait for an application-owned readiness or progress condition. Do not treat one rAF callback or a fixed short delay as proof that the desired state is ready.
toHaveScreenshot()keeps waiting or does not stabilize: look for continuously changing pixels, such as an animation or live chart. Set the desired state before the assertion, or control or mask the changing region.- Disabling animations gives the wrong frame: Playwright’s animation handling alters CSS and Web Animations; it does not select a precise state for JavaScript animations driven by rAF. Synchronize to the application’s progress instead.
- rAF waits do not run in the test: browsers usually pause rAF in hidden tabs and iframes. Ensure the page is in an appropriate visible context, or use a state-based wait that does not depend on an animation frame.
requestFrame()fails with a security error: check whether the canvas is origin-clean and review the target browser’s support for canvas capture.- A DOM-derived image differs from what the browser displays: html2canvas reconstructs content rather than taking a literal screenshot. Review its documented CSS support and cross-origin image or iframe limitations; use browser automation when the rendered page is what must be captured.
