Each points to a different fix. For a single local video, check the OBS Media Source’s Loop setting; for a playlist, check VLC Video’s Loop Playlist. If the source is still playing but OBS stutters, investigate rendering or encoding load. If OBS reports dropped frames, troubleshoot the connection to YouTube’s ingest server instead.
Identify which part is freezing
“Freezing” can describe several different failures. Check what you can observe before changing settings:

- Only the video stops or fails to restart: Check the media source and its loop setting.
- The OBS preview or interface stutters: Investigate local rendering and encoding workload.
- OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises: Investigate the connection to the stream server; this does not by itself mean the media loop failed.
- Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames: Follow the viewer-delivery branch. The issue may be on viewers’ networks or devices, rather than in the local source.

One local video: Media Source
OBS documents Media Source as its built-in source for local media files. Open the source’s properties and verify that Loop is enabled. That setting makes the file play again after playback completes.

Do not confuse Loop with the other playback options. Restart playback when source becomes active controls what happens when the source becomes active; it is not the setting that repeats a completed file. Show nothing when playback ends controls what appears at the end of playback; it does not enable looping.
A playlist: VLC Video
For a playlist, OBS describes VLC Video as an alternative and documents Loop Playlist as on by default. Confirm VLC is installed. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Check the source properties against the official OBS Media Sources documentation. If the file or playlist advances but the overall preview stutters, proceed to rendering and encoding checks rather than changing loop behavior.

Reduce OBS rendering and encoding workload
If the preview or output is choppy, or OBS indicates performance overload, reduce the work OBS must do. OBS notes that even sources that are not visible may use resources, so hiding a source is not always enough to remove its cost.
- Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary sources and effects, and avoid keeping resource-intensive sources active when they are not needed.
- Reduce source demands. Where possible, use fewer or lower-resolution sources.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. These changes reduce workload but also reduce output detail or smoothness. OBS gives reducing 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick troubleshooting step for some GPU-overload cases; it is not a guaranteed fix or a setting required on every system.
Make one change at a time and observe whether the same symptom improves. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers these measures; they are diagnostic options, not proof of a particular cause.
Consider a compatible hardware encoder
If software encoding is the bottleneck, a compatible hardware encoder may move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Support depends on the operating system and available hardware, and encoder generations can differ in image quality at the same bitrate. It is a possible workload adjustment, not a universal fix for a media source that stops looping.

Dropped frames in OBS
OBS attributes dropped frames to an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate. If the counter rises, investigate connection stability and whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Changing the media source’s loop setting will not repair an unstable network path.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide for this branch. The symptom alone does not establish whether the cause is your local network, internet connection, or path to the ingest server.

Buffering reported by viewers, without dropped frames
If OBS is not dropping frames, do not assume the local video source is frozen. Viewers use different networks and devices, and delivery or transcoding conditions can affect playback. Consult OBS’s viewer buffering guide and compare reports across viewers before changing local encoding settings.

There is not enough information in the symptom alone to name a root cause. To narrow it down, note:
- Your operating system and OBS version.
- Whether you use Media Source or VLC Video, plus the file’s container and codec if known.
- When the freeze occurs: during playback, at the loop point, after a scene change, or at irregular intervals.
- Whether the OBS interface and preview remain responsive.
- Whether OBS’s dropped-frame counter increases, and whether viewers report buffering.
- Your hardware and encoder choice, along with the output resolution and frame rate.
Meeting OBS’s baseline system requirements does not guarantee smooth performance for every workload. OBS says CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Consult the OBS System Requirements page alongside the relevant troubleshooting guide.
