What the MIT license lets you do
The BackstopJS repository license grants permission to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and sell copies of the software. That includes using it in a commercial project; the license does not restrict use to personal or noncommercial work. Read the license text.
BackstopJS is visual regression testing software for web applications. Its documented workflow creates reference screenshots, captures later screenshots, compares them, and presents visual differences for review. The project describes npm installation and CI workflows. Project homepage · README
What you must retain when distributing it
The MIT License requires the copyright notice and permission notice to be included in copies or substantial portions of the software. The repository license names Garris Shipon and a 2014 copyright year. If you distribute BackstopJS or include substantial portions in a product, keep those notices with the applicable copies or materials.
The license also disclaims warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and limits liability. This is a software license grant, not a promise that the software is suitable for a particular business use.
Check the exact release and its dependencies
The repository-level MIT license answers whether BackstopJS itself may be used commercially. For a specific deployment or redistributed bundle, inspect the LICENSE file for the exact release you use and review notices for dependencies and separately distributed components. GitHub notes that its repository license detection does not account for dependency licenses. GitHub Docs: Licensing a repository

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alternative for capturing screenshots through an API
If your need is website screenshots rather than visual regression testing, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for BackstopJS’s reference-and-comparison workflow: it returns screenshots or PDFs from a URL. Its clean-capture flow removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
