Without it, approval promotes every changed image in the most recent test batch.
Approve selected screenshots step by step

Run
backstop testto capture the current pages and compare them with the approved references. -
Open the visual report and find the exact filenames for the changed screenshots you want to accept. BackstopJS filenames normally include scenario and viewport names; use the report rather than guessing at the naming.

Build a regular expression that matches only those filenames. For example, if the report filenames fit the pattern, you could run
backstop approve --filter='checkout.*desktop'. This is an illustrative pattern, not a guaranteed filename: adapt it to the names in your report.The Tool Desk

If you ran the test with a non-default configuration file, pass the same config path to approval, for example
backstop approve --config=backstop.config.js --filter='checkout.*desktop'. Replace the example path and expression with the values used by your project. -
Review the updated references or run the test again to check that the intended captures now compare against the accepted baseline.

The official BackstopJS README documents --filter=<image_filename_regex> for restricting approval to matching image filenames.
What the approval filter does—and does not do
backstop approve updates the reference collection from the most recent test batch. If you omit its filter, BackstopJS promotes all images with changes from that batch. With the filter, it promotes only captures whose image filenames match the regular expression.
Do not confuse the approval filter with the test filter. backstop test --filter=<scenarioLabelRegex> selects scenarios to run. backstop approve --filter=<image_filename_regex> selects captures to promote. Filtering the test run does not itself express which of its changed captures you want to approve; inspect the report and use the approval filter when accepting only part of the batch.
Keep comparison thresholds separate from approval selection
BackstopJS comparison options determine how image differences are judged, not which images become references. The README lists misMatchThreshold with a default of 0.1, and documents requireSameDimensions (default true) for whether a screenshot dimension change causes a failure. Changing either setting does not replace the filename filter when you need selective approval.

Troubleshooting selective approval

More screenshots were approved than intended: the expression may match more filenames than expected, or approval may have been run without
--filter. Check the report’s exact filenames and narrow the regular expression before approving. -
The intended screenshot was not approved: check that the filename matches the expression, including its scenario and viewport portions, and that the capture is from the most recent test batch.

Approval uses the wrong configuration: if the test used a custom config path, supply that same
--configpath tobackstop approve. -
A visual difference still fails: approval selection and comparison thresholds are separate. Confirm that the capture was promoted; then review the comparison settings if the remaining issue concerns how differences or dimension changes are evaluated.
