It is most useful when people must visit untrusted sites or when a web-based compromise could have serious consequences. It is a containment layer—not a substitute for browser updates, web filtering, identity controls, or endpoint security.
What browser isolation does
A browser loads code and content from websites. If a site is malicious or compromised, that content may try to exploit the browser or reach data and resources available to it. Browser isolation creates a boundary around that activity: the browser session runs in a sandbox, virtual machine, or remote environment rather than having ordinary access to the device.
The goal is to limit the impact of hostile web content, not to prove that a site is safe. The NSA describes isolation as a way to limit malicious code to an ephemeral environment, reducing the impact of exploits. It also warns that zero-day vulnerabilities can defeat many browser defenses, which is why isolation belongs alongside other security controls. NSA, Steps to Secure Web Browsing
How the main types differ
| Approach | Where web content runs | What is separated | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local browser isolation | On the user’s device, typically in a sandbox or virtual machine | Browser activity from the operating system or other local environment | Creates a local containment boundary; uses endpoint resources and requires management. |
| Remote browser isolation (RBI) | In a remote virtualized or cloud-hosted environment | Active web content from the endpoint and, depending on design, the corporate network | The remote service processes the site and sends an interactive representation back to the user. Latency, availability, privacy, and data-transfer controls matter. |
| Browser site isolation | Locally, within the browser’s process architecture | One website’s process from another website’s process | A browser feature that helps prevent one site from accessing another site’s data; it is not a remote browsing service. |
CISA describes local isolation as typically using a sandbox or virtual machine, and remote isolation as moving web-data processing to a secure virtualized or cloud environment. Google describes Chrome site isolation as separating pages from different websites into different processes. CISA browser security guidance Google Chrome: Protect your data with site isolation

When browser isolation is worth considering
Isolation is most relevant when users need access to web content that is unknown, risky, or frequently changing, or when a successful web attack could expose sensitive systems or data. It can also be useful for contractors, remote users, or managed-device users who need a more contained path to the web.
Organizations can apply it selectively—for example, to risky categories, links, downloads, or attachments—or more broadly when policy requires that web content not run directly on endpoints. CISA describes policies ranging from isolating part of web traffic to applying isolation to every download, attachment, and link. A preliminary NIST zero-trust example discusses full-time isolation as an option when an organization does not want to grant implicit trust to web traffic; it is an example, not a universal recommendation. How site isolation fits in
Chrome’s site isolation is a complementary local-browser control, not remote browser isolation. Google’s administrator documentation says desktop site isolation is enabled by default from Chrome 76, and on most Android devices for sites users sign into from Chrome 77. Administrators can require site isolation and configure additional origins through policy. These are Chrome-specific version details; they do not describe every browser or guarantee that a local session is isolated from the device. Google Chrome administrator documentation
What isolation does not protect against by itself
Isolation reduces direct exposure of the endpoint to active web content, but residual risks remain. A browser or isolation-platform vulnerability, a misconfiguration, weak identity controls, or an allowed transfer of sensitive data can still create exposure. Continue to patch browsers and operating systems, filter traffic, enforce access policies, protect endpoints, and monitor for incidents.

Remote isolation can add controls over how people interact with sites, but the exact options depend on the service and configuration. Palo Alto Networks documents controls for keyboard input, copy and paste, uploads, downloads, and printing. Cloudflare documents ways to restrict user input on risky sites and control data transmission to sensitive web applications. These are examples of vendor capabilities, not features guaranteed in every RBI deployment. Palo Alto Networks RBI documentation Cloudflare Browser Isolation documentation
Operational and privacy tradeoffs
A remote service becomes part of the browsing path, so assess its performance and resilience as well as its security. The NSA identifies cost, usability, potential single points of failure, and throughput capacity as issues to consider. Their impact depends on the provider, network path, workload, and policy. Test the applications people actually use, including media, authentication, file transfers, and failover behavior.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Review how the provider handles encrypted traffic, logs, session data, retention, geographic processing, and administrative access. For example, Cloudflare states that its Browser Isolation service decrypts internet traffic using its root certificate authority for transparent isolated browsing and threat blocking, with traffic logs retained according to its Zero Trust documentation. That disclosure is specific to Cloudflare; review the terms and configuration of whichever provider you consider. Cloudflare Browser Isolation documentation NSA browser security guidance

- Execution boundary: Does content run in a local sandbox, a remote session, or separate browser processes?
- Traffic scope: Will isolation cover selected destinations and file flows, or all browsing?
- Allowed actions: Can users type, copy and paste, upload, download, print, and complete authentication workflows as needed?
- Data handling: How are traffic decryption, logs, session persistence or deletion, retention, processing location, and provider access handled?
- Availability and performance: What latency, throughput, media compatibility, capacity, and failover behavior does the service provide for your workload?
- Integration and administration: How does it work with identity, endpoint, web gateway, DNS, data-loss prevention, and network policies?
- Cost and user impact: Include licensing or infrastructure, support, workflow friction, and exception handling.
These are comparison criteria, not a ranking of providers; no provider was independently tested. Product availability and licensing are provider-specific and can change. How to decide
- Consider remote isolation when users must reach untrusted web content and reducing its direct contact with endpoints is worth the service, privacy, and workflow tradeoffs.
- Consider local isolation when a managed, endpoint-based sandbox or virtual machine meets the security requirement and remote-service dependencies are undesirable.
- Use browser site isolation as a complementary control for local browsing, while recognizing that it separates site processes rather than moving the session off the device.
- Do not rely on isolation alone: maintain patching, filtering, identity and endpoint controls, and monitoring whatever model you choose.
