To make a chosen website open in a new Microsoft Edge tab, set it as the homepage and then select it for new tabs if that option appears in your version of Edge. The Home button, the page shown when Edge starts, and the New tab page are separate settings, so changing the Home button alone may not change new tabs.
Set a homepage in Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge and select the Settings and more (…) menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings, then Start, home, and new tab page.
- Turn on Show home button.
- Choose the option to enter a URL and type or paste the address of the website you want as your homepage.
Microsoft’s desktop instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Setting names and choices can vary between Edge versions. Microsoft’s home page instructions show the Home button and URL steps.

Choose what opens in a new tab
In the same Start, home, and new tab page settings area, look for the new-tab behavior. If your version offers an option to open new tabs with your homepage, select it. Microsoft’s home-page instructions describe this choice, but its wording and availability may differ in your installed version.

Understand the three page settings
- Homepage: The website associated with the Home button. Enable the button and specify a URL to use a custom homepage.
- New tab page: The page Edge displays when you open a new tab. Its controls are separate from the Home button setting.
- Startup page: What Edge displays when the browser launches. Set this separately if you want a particular page to appear at startup.
Microsoft groups these controls under Start, home, and new tab page; its Edge overview identifies this settings area.
Confirm the change
Open a new tab and check which page appears. If you still see Edge’s built-in New tab page, return to the settings and check the new-tab choice: setting a homepage URL does not necessarily change that behavior.
