For most people, the safest choice is not to install an app from an unverified developer. If you have a specific reason to proceed, Google’s current Android flow requires turning on Developer options, enabling Allow apps from unverified developers, waiting through a one-time 24-hour security delay, and then reviewing Android’s installation warning. The exact menu labels can vary by Android version and device maker.
Before you install: verify the app and the person asking you to install it
An “unverified developer” warning is a reason to pause, not a routine prompt to dismiss. Google recommends apps from verified developers and warns that scammers may pose as bank-fraud agents, technical support staff, or delivery services to persuade people to install fake apps. If someone contacted you and urged you to install an app, do not use the links or phone numbers in that message to check their story.
- Get the app from the developer’s genuine official site or a trusted app store. A search ad, file-sharing link, unsolicited message, or lookalike web address does not prove that a download is authentic.
- Confirm the app name and developer with the relevant organization using a separate, trusted channel—for example, the organization’s official website or a phone number you already know is genuine. Be especially cautious with banking, delivery, workplace, and support apps.
- Keep Google Play Protect on. It can check for potentially harmful apps, warn you, and remove apps if needed, but a clean scan does not prove that the download came from the real developer or that the app is safe.
Google says that apps installed outside Google Play may cause the device to send information to Google to help protect against harmful apps. The information may include app-related URLs, log information, device ID, Android version, and IP address. See Google’s Android app-download guidance for details.
Install through Android’s current unverified-developer flow
Google’s documented advanced flow uses a one-time 24-hour security delay. Complete the setup only if you have independently checked the app and accept the risk of installing it.

- Open Settings and turn on Developer options. The route to Developer options varies by device and Android version; follow your manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find it.
- Go to System > Developer options. Enable Allow apps from unverified developers, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Wait for the 24-hour security delay to finish. This delay is part of Google’s setup process; it is not an indication that the app itself has been checked or approved.
- Choose how long to keep the advanced flow enabled. Google’s flow offers seven days or indefinitely. Choose the shorter period if you need the feature temporarily and do not want it to remain enabled.
- Start the app installation and read Android’s warning. Tap Install anyway only if you have checked the developer and download source, understand the risk, and still want to proceed. Do not let urgency from a caller, message, or app page make the decision for you.
Google describes the setup and delay in its instructions for allowing app installs from unverified developers. If you no longer need the advanced flow, turn it off in Developer options.
How this differs from the older “Install unknown apps” setting
The unverified-developer flow is not the same as Android’s older sideloading permission. For the older installation route, the setting depends on Android version:

| Android version | Older sideloading control | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Android 8.0 (API 26) and newer | Permission for a particular source, managed in the Install unknown apps system settings screen | Installation permission is granted to a specific source rather than through one device-wide “Unknown sources” switch. |
| Android 7.1.1 (API 25) and lower | Unknown sources in Security settings | Some older devices show a confirmation for each installation. Android Developers advises allowing one installation at a time when that option is available. |
Manufacturers can change menu placement and wording. Android Developers explains the older distribution options in its alternative distribution guidance; use your device maker’s instructions if your menus differ.
What Play Protect can—and cannot—tell you
Play Protect adds a built-in scanning and warning layer. It does not authenticate the website or message where you found an app, certify the developer, or eliminate the risks of sideloading. Do not turn it off to make an installation warning disappear.

Also distinguish app scanning from device certification. Certification means a device passed Android compatibility testing and is eligible to include licensed Google apps. To check certification, open Play Store > profile icon > Settings > About and look for the Play Protect certification status. Google says an uncertified device may not receive Android system or app updates, may have apps or features that do not work correctly, and may lack secure backups. Turning off Play Protect does not fix an uncertified-device issue. See Google’s certification-status instructions.
Developer verification is rolling out by region
Google’s user-help page says that, starting in September 2026, apps downloaded from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand must be registered by a verified developer to install and receive updates. It names Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps as the initial participating stores. The page describes a global expansion across all install sources as planned for 2027, and says the requirement applies to certified devices running Android 8 and newer, with exceptions including AOSP and non-certified devices, places where Google Mobile Services are unsupported, and territories subject to trade sanctions. See Google’s user guidance on Android developer verification.

Google’s Developer Console help page instead says protections go live on September 30, 2026, in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, and also describes an expansion to all apps on certified Android devices in 2027. It lists the same initial app-store group. Because Google’s two pages differ on the initial country list and start wording, treat this as a staged, region-specific rollout—not a rule that already blocks unverified apps on every Android device worldwide. The Console page says verification checks developer identity and app registration, not app content or download location, so verification is not a guarantee that an app is harmless. Android Debug Bridge (ADB) can be used by developers and power users to install modified or unverified apps on their own devices. Google describes this as a developer or testing route, not the normal consumer installation walkthrough. If you are simply trying to install an app for everyday use, follow the consumer flow above rather than treating ADB as a shortcut around a warning.
