There is no universal winner in the Galaxy S26 Ultra vs. iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison. Choose the Galaxy if you want its S Pen, Samsung DeX, built-in Privacy Display or a dedicated 5x telephoto lens. Choose the iPhone if you prefer iOS, want variable-aperture camera controls, or value the results it posted in Tom’s Guide’s cited performance and battery tests. Those test results reflect that outlet’s methods, not every person’s use.
At a glance
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stylus input or desktop-style use | Galaxy S26 Ultra | It supports the S Pen and Samsung DeX. |
| Camera aperture controls | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Its 48MP Fusion Main camera has a variable aperture and manual aperture controls. |
| Longer optical telephoto reach | Galaxy S26 Ultra | Tom’s Guide notes its dedicated 5x telephoto offers more optical reach than the iPhone’s 4x telephoto. |
| Results in Tom’s Guide’s CPU, GPU and battery tests | iPhone 18 Pro Max | It scored higher in the outlet’s cited Geekbench 6 and 3DMark results and lasted longer in its battery-drain test. |
| Higher score in the cited AI benchmark | Galaxy S26 Ultra | It scored higher in Tom’s Guide’s Geekbench AI 1.7 result, but the reported runtime/backend differs, so this is not a universal AI ranking. |
| Starting price in Tom’s Guide’s comparison | Tie | Both were listed at $1,299 for 256GB; local pricing and offers vary. |
What the displays and privacy features offer
Galaxy S26 Ultra: large adaptive-refresh screen and Privacy Display
Samsung lists a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh. The 6.9-inch diagonal measures the full rectangle; Samsung says it is 6.7 inches when accounting for rounded corners. Samsung calls the S26 Ultra the first phone with a built-in Privacy Display. That is a specific feature to weigh if limiting on-screen visibility in some situations matters to you, not a guarantee of privacy in every setting.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: consider your iOS and Apple Intelligence needs
Apple’s announcement highlights iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, along with the A20 Pro and an upgraded thermal system. If you already rely on Apple devices or services, compatibility and familiarity may matter more to your decision than a display specification alone. Samsung promotes Galaxy AI; the available evidence here does not establish a single best ecosystem for all buyers.

Camera choice: aperture controls or greater telephoto reach?
Choose the iPhone for variable aperture and manual control
The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Tom’s Guide describes manual aperture controls as a distinguishing option. That may appeal if you want direct control over how the main camera handles light and depth of field.

Choose the Galaxy for a dedicated 5x telephoto
Tom’s Guide notes that Samsung’s dedicated 5x telephoto provides more optical reach than the iPhone’s 4x telephoto. That can be useful when you regularly photograph distant subjects. The trade-off is about the shooting options each phone emphasizes; the lens reach alone does not settle overall image quality. Tom’s Guide’s image-quality assessments are its observations, not a universal result for every scene or photographer.
Productivity: S Pen and DeX versus the Apple setup you already use
Galaxy S26 Ultra for stylus work or a desktop-style phone experience
Samsung documents S Pen support and Samsung DeX support on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The stylus can suit people who prefer handwriting, marking up material or drawing directly on a phone. DeX is relevant if you want to use the phone in a desktop-style setup. These named features are reasons to choose the Galaxy only if they fit your actual workflow.

iPhone 18 Pro Max for continuity with Apple devices and services
If your daily devices and services are already Apple-based, staying with iOS may reduce friction in your existing setup. If you rely on Samsung or Android devices and services, the Galaxy may be the more natural fit. The choice depends on your devices, apps and habits; neither ecosystem is best for everyone.
Performance and battery: what Tom’s Guide measured
The following numbers come from Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison. They describe results under that publication’s protocols, not guaranteed performance in every app, game, network condition or day of use.

| Tom’s Guide test (2026) | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6, single-core | 4,741 | 3,785 |
| Geekbench 6, multi-core | 12,789 | 11,563 |
| 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited, frame rate / score | 67.9 fps / 17,850 | 49.37 fps / 12,984 |
| Geekbench AI 1.7 | 71,974 | 83,047 (TensorFlow Lite QNN) |
| Battery-drain test duration | 18 hours 27 minutes | 16 hours 40 minutes |
The iPhone led in the listed CPU and graphics results and in Tom’s Guide’s battery-drain test. The Galaxy’s AI score was higher, but its result is labeled TensorFlow Lite QNN while the iPhone’s reported score uses a different runtime/backend context. Do not read that single comparison as a general ranking of on-device AI. For separate context, Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max models under Apple’s test conditions; that manufacturer figure is not directly comparable to Tom’s Guide’s Galaxy-versus-iPhone battery test.

Before buying, compare the same storage capacity, unlocked or carrier-locked status, trade-in value, payment terms and local offer. Taxes and regional pricing can also change the total; the cited starting price is not a guarantee of what you will pay.
