It helps keep the bump from resting directly on tables, but it is not a guarantee against scratches or drops. Clean marks gently with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth; avoid abrasive materials and cleaning products that can wear down the phone’s coating.
Choose a raised-edge case for everyday contact protection
A raised perimeter around the camera area creates clearance between the lenses and a flat surface when you set the phone down. Belkin says its raised camera edges help keep lenses elevated to reduce everyday scratches; Mous describes a similar everyday-scratch barrier and limits its claim to minor damage rather than extreme drops. Check the case listing for your exact iPhone model. Camera layouts and dimensions differ, so a case designed for another generation may not fit properly or provide the intended clearance. Decide whether a separate lens protector is worthwhile
A lens protector covers the lenses directly; a raised-edge case instead creates a barrier around the camera area. The choice depends on which kind of coverage you want and whether the accessory works with your case. Neither option is established here as a way to prevent discoloration of the surrounding camera-bump finish.

For example, OtterBox lists a glass camera lens protector for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus and claims scratch and dust defense. The product page showed the item out of stock when accessed: OtterBox. That listing does not establish that the protector covers the surrounding bump or prevents color changes. Check compatibility and case fit before buying. An added optical layer may affect images, but no independent comparison of image quality or failure modes is established by the cited material.
Clean the camera area without damaging its finish
- Power down and disconnect cables where appropriate. Follow Apple’s device-cleaning guidance for the exact model: Apple: How to clean your Apple products.
- Remove loose dust gently. Avoid abrasive polishing and compressed air.
- Wipe with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth, such as a lens or microfiber cloth. Apple warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish the phone’s coating and may scratch it.
If a mark looks like a scratch, try the gentle cloth method before treating it as permanent damage. Apple notes that material transferred from objects such as denim or pocket contents can resemble a scratch on textured glass or Ceramic Shield, and that it can be removed in most cases. That guidance concerns those surfaces; it does not mean every mark on every camera bump is removable.

Know when a color change may be temporary
Apple says skin oil may temporarily alter the color of the outside band on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple recommends wiping it with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth to restore the original look. This note applies to the named models and their outside band; it is not evidence that discoloration on other models or other camera-bump finishes has the same cause.
Keep magnetic accessories clear of the rear cameras
Magnets are not a scratch-prevention issue, but they can affect camera function. Apple advises: “For the best camera performance, avoid accessories that use magnets or magnetic metal near the iPhone rear camera (or cameras).” Keep magnetized accessories and magnetisable metal away from the rear camera where practical, and consult Apple’s guidance: Apple: Using magnets in iPhone cases and accessories.
