100 Open-Source Alternatives to Popular Software

A category-by-category discovery list of 100 open-source software alternatives, with practical checks for licensing, hosting, compatibility, and migration.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single open-source replacement for every proprietary app, and “best” depends on the job you need done. This 100-project discovery list groups candidates by use: it is an editorial shortlist, not a tested ranking or a guarantee of feature parity. Before switching, check the project’s current license, supported platforms, deployment options, and migration tools.

Office, notes, and personal productivity

Start here for documents, personal information management, and everyday planning. These tools do different jobs, so a note app should not be treated as a full office suite or project tracker.

# Project Consider it for
1 LibreOffice Desktop documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
2 ONLYOFFICE Office documents and collaborative editing
3 Collabora Online Browser-based office editing, often alongside a self-hosted platform
4 CryptPad Online documents, spreadsheets, and collaborative workspaces
5 Joplin Notes and notebooks
6 Logseq Outlines, linked notes, and personal knowledge management
7 AppFlowy Documents, databases, and workspace-style organization
8 Vikunja Tasks and personal or team planning
9 Standard Notes Private note-taking
10 Nextcloud Files, calendars, contacts, and collaboration in a self-hostable platform

Project management and team work

These projects can cover tasks, issue tracking, roadmaps, or documentation. Check whether your team depends on a specific workflow—such as sprint planning, custom fields, or automation—before importing a live project.

# Project Consider it for
11 OpenProject Project planning, task tracking, and team coordination
12 Taiga Agile project management
13 Plane Issues, projects, and product planning
14 Wekan Kanban boards
15 Kanboard Simple Kanban task management

17 Leantime Project planning and task management
18 Focalboard Boards and project tracking; check current maintenance before choosing
19 Forgejo Self-hosted code collaboration and project issue tracking
20 Documize Team documentation and internal knowledge bases

Chat, meetings, and communication

Communication tools vary in account model, federation, hosting, and encryption. Decide whether you need public channels, private team chat, voice calls, or a service your organization operates itself.

Design, diagrams, and publishing

For creative work, compare file compatibility and export formats as carefully as features. A tool that opens a format may not preserve every effect, font, or collaborative workflow.

# Project Consider it for
31 GIMP Raster image editing
32 Krita Digital painting and illustration
33 Inkscape Vector illustration and SVG graphics
34 Penpot Interface design and prototyping
35 Excalidraw Diagrams, sketches, and wireframes

Websites, analytics, and customer tools

Analytics and customer platforms handle sensitive data. Compare data collection, retention, access controls, integrations, and hosting responsibilities—not just dashboards or feature lists.

# Project Consider it for
41 Matomo Web analytics
42 Plausible Analytics Website traffic analytics
43 Umami Lightweight website analytics
44 PostHog Product analytics and feature management
45 WordPress Web publishing and content management
46 Ghost Publishing and newsletters
47 Drupal Content management for structured websites
48 Strapi Headless content management
49 Directus Content and data management on SQL databases
50 SuiteCRM Customer relationship management

Software development and data work

Developer tools are rarely interchangeable on name alone. Check repository compatibility, CI integrations, extension support, language tooling, and whether the project’s license applies to the edition you plan to use.

# Project Consider it for
51 GitLab Community Edition Git hosting and software development workflows
52 Gitea Lightweight self-hosted Git collaboration
53 Forgejo Community-led Git hosting and collaboration
54 VSCodium Code editing based on the VS Code source tree
55 Vim Terminal-based text editing

57 Eclipse IDE Integrated development environments and language tooling
58 Apache NetBeans Java and other application development
59 JupyterLab Interactive notebooks and data exploration
60 Metabase Business intelligence and database exploration

AI, local models, and automation

Some projects in this category are interfaces or infrastructure rather than models themselves. A local interface does not make every connected model local: check where inference runs and what data is sent to any remote API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
# Project Consider it for
61 Ollama Running supported open models locally
62 Open WebUI A self-hosted interface for local or API-backed models
63 LocalAI Serving AI models through compatible APIs
64 llama.cpp Running supported language models across different hardware
65 vLLM Serving language models for higher-throughput workloads

67 Flowise Building visual workflows for AI applications
68 n8n Workflow automation and integrations
69 Node-RED Visual automation and event-driven integrations
70 Home Assistant Home automation and device integrations

Media, photos, and games

Media libraries can involve large collections, mobile backups, codecs, and hardware acceleration. Confirm supported devices and formats, storage needs, and backup behavior before moving an archive or replacing a daily-use app.

# Project Consider it for
71 Immich Self-hosted photo and video management
72 Jellyfin Personal media streaming
73 Kodi Media-center playback and library management
74 VLC Playing a broad range of media formats
75 Audacity Audio editing and recording

77 OBS Studio Live streaming and screen recording
78 HandBrake Video transcoding
79 Godot 2D and 3D game development
80 OpenRCT2 Open-source reimplementation of a classic theme-park game; original game assets may be required

Browsers, email, and personal devices

Browser and email choices affect extensions, sync, account services, and compatibility with sites or organizations. “Open-source browser” does not necessarily mean every bundled service or every part of a vendor’s distribution is open source.

# Project Consider it for
81 Mozilla Firefox Everyday web browsing
82 Chromium Chromium-based web browsing
83 Tor Browser Browsing through the Tor network
84 Mullvad Browser Privacy-oriented web browsing
85 Thunderbird Desktop email, calendars, and contacts
86 K-9 Mail Email on Android

90 RustDesk Remote desktop, with self-hosted server options
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Servers, security, and infrastructure

Infrastructure projects may replace a hosted service only if someone takes responsibility for setup, updates, backups, monitoring, and security. Self-hosting is an option for some tools, not a requirement for every open-source alternative.

# Project Consider it for
91 Vaultwarden A self-hosted password-manager-compatible server; check client compatibility and security needs
92 KeePassXC Locally managed password vaults
93 Bitwarden Password management, with deployment and edition details to verify
94 OpenVPN Virtual private network infrastructure
95 WireGuard Modern VPN connectivity
96 AdGuard Home Network-level DNS filtering
97 Pi-hole Network-wide DNS-based blocking
98 Proxmox VE Virtual machines and containers on a server
99 TrueNAS Network-attached storage management
100 Immich Self-hosted photo and video management; included here as a server-hosted use case

How to choose an alternative that will actually work

Use the list to identify candidates, then compare each against the workflow and constraints that matter in your case. Directory listings can help surface possibilities, but they do not establish a complete ranking, product parity, or that a project’s terms and capabilities remain unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the must-haves. List the tasks, collaboration features, integrations, import/export formats, and accessibility or platform requirements you rely on today.
  2. Check the project and edition. Read the current license and documentation for the exact app, edition, and components you would deploy. A project can offer open-source software, paid hosted service, or both; source availability alone does not establish that a product is open source.
  3. Choose a deployment model. Determine whether you will use a hosted service, install an app locally, or operate a server. For self-hosting, identify who will maintain updates, backups, access controls, and recovery.
  4. Test the migration path. Check whether the old tool can export the data you need, whether the alternative can import it, and what may not transfer—such as comments, permissions, automations, or history.
  5. Run a small pilot. Try a representative project or a copy of non-sensitive data. Check the important workflows, collaboration, performance on your devices, and export from the candidate before making a full switch.
  6. Estimate total cost and effort. Include hosting, storage, support, administration, training, and the time needed to maintain or migrate the system. A no-cost download does not by itself mean a lower total cost.

What the examples do—and do not—establish

Directories cover many software categories and map familiar products such as Jira, Notion, Slack, Linear, and Google Analytics to possible alternatives. A curated list updated September 29, 2026, also names Ollama, Open WebUI, Immich, RustDesk, Godot, and Excalidraw as examples across local AI, self-hosted services, remote desktop, games, and diagrams. These listings are useful starting points, not independent product evaluations. Confirm current project details in the project’s own documentation before committing to a replacement.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
