Office, notes, and personal productivity
Start here for documents, personal information management, and everyday planning. These tools do different jobs, so a note app should not be treated as a full office suite or project tracker.

Project management and team work
These projects can cover tasks, issue tracking, roadmaps, or documentation. Check whether your team depends on a specific workflow—such as sprint planning, custom fields, or automation—before importing a live project.

Design, diagrams, and publishing
For creative work, compare file compatibility and export formats as carefully as features. A tool that opens a format may not preserve every effect, font, or collaborative workflow.

Websites, analytics, and customer tools
Analytics and customer platforms handle sensitive data. Compare data collection, retention, access controls, integrations, and hosting responsibilities—not just dashboards or feature lists.

| 41 | Matomo | Web analytics |
| 42 | Plausible Analytics | Website traffic analytics |

Software development and data work
Developer tools are rarely interchangeable on name alone. Check repository compatibility, CI integrations, extension support, language tooling, and whether the project’s license applies to the edition you plan to use.

|---|---|---|
| 51 | GitLab Community Edition | Git hosting and software development workflows |

AI, local models, and automation
Some projects in this category are interfaces or infrastructure rather than models themselves. A local interface does not make every connected model local: check where inference runs and what data is sent to any remote API.

Media, photos, and games
Media libraries can involve large collections, mobile backups, codecs, and hardware acceleration. Confirm supported devices and formats, storage needs, and backup behavior before moving an archive or replacing a daily-use app.
| # | Project | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| 71 | Immich | Self-hosted photo and video management |

Browsers, email, and personal devices
Browser and email choices affect extensions, sync, account services, and compatibility with sites or organizations. “Open-source browser” does not necessarily mean every bundled service or every part of a vendor’s distribution is open source.
| # | Project | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| 81 | Mozilla Firefox | Everyday web browsing |
| 82 | Chromium | Chromium-based web browsing |
| 83 | Tor Browser | Browsing through the Tor network |
| 84 | Mullvad Browser | Privacy-oriented web browsing |

| 89 | Syncthing | Peer-to-peer file synchronization |
| 90 | RustDesk | Remote desktop, with self-hosted server options |
Servers, security, and infrastructure
Infrastructure projects may replace a hosted service only if someone takes responsibility for setup, updates, backups, monitoring, and security. Self-hosting is an option for some tools, not a requirement for every open-source alternative.
| # | Project | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| 91 | Vaultwarden | A self-hosted password-manager-compatible server; check client compatibility and security needs |
| 92 | KeePassXC | Locally managed password vaults |

How to choose an alternative that will actually work
Use the list to identify candidates, then compare each against the workflow and constraints that matter in your case. Directory listings can help surface possibilities, but they do not establish a complete ranking, product parity, or that a project’s terms and capabilities remain unchanged.
Best Value
- Write down the must-haves. List the tasks, collaboration features, integrations, import/export formats, and accessibility or platform requirements you rely on today.
- Check the project and edition. Read the current license and documentation for the exact app, edition, and components you would deploy. A project can offer open-source software, paid hosted service, or both; source availability alone does not establish that a product is open source.
- Choose a deployment model. Determine whether you will use a hosted service, install an app locally, or operate a server. For self-hosting, identify who will maintain updates, backups, access controls, and recovery.
- Test the migration path. Check whether the old tool can export the data you need, whether the alternative can import it, and what may not transfer—such as comments, permissions, automations, or history.
- Run a small pilot. Try a representative project or a copy of non-sensitive data. Check the important workflows, collaboration, performance on your devices, and export from the candidate before making a full switch.
- Estimate total cost and effort. Include hosting, storage, support, administration, training, and the time needed to maintain or migrate the system. A no-cost download does not by itself mean a lower total cost.
What the examples do—and do not—establish
Directories cover many software categories and map familiar products such as Jira, Notion, Slack, Linear, and Google Analytics to possible alternatives. A curated list updated September 29, 2026, also names Ollama, Open WebUI, Immich, RustDesk, Godot, and Excalidraw as examples across local AI, self-hosted services, remote desktop, games, and diagrams. These listings are useful starting points, not independent product evaluations. Confirm current project details in the project’s own documentation before committing to a replacement.
