Instagram launched a dedicated iPad app on September 3, 2025, in the United States, through Apple’s App Store. Unlike the older iPhone-oriented experience on an iPad, the new app was redesigned for a larger display: it opens on Reels, puts Stories across the top, and keeps messaging close at hand. Apple’s current US App Store listing says the app requires iPadOS 16.3 or later.
When did the Instagram iPad app launch?
Instagram announced the dedicated iPad app on September 3, 2025, US time. Meta’s regional newsroom announcement was published on September 4 in Japan time, while contemporaneous US coverage described the App Store rollout on September 3.
The release followed requests from users for an experience designed specifically for a tablet rather than an enlarged iPhone interface. Instagram characterized the redesign as being built for “lean back entertainment,” meaning content that is comfortable to browse on a larger screen.
What is different about Instagram on iPad?
Reels is the opening view
The iPad app opens to Reels instead of the familiar feed-first view. That choice reflects Instagram’s emphasis on video viewing on larger screens. Meta said more than 50% of time spent on Instagram was spent on Reels in 2025, and that users reshared Reels more than 4.5 billion times per day. Both figures come from Meta’s own launch announcement, not an independent measurement.

Stories stay at the top
Stories appear across the top of the interface, preserving a familiar way to reach recent posts while leaving more room for the main content area.
Messaging is easier to reach
Direct messages are readily accessible from the larger-screen layout. Launch coverage also described layouts that could let users check messages or notifications without fully leaving the content they were viewing.

Following offers more feed choices
The Following area was reported with three views: All, Friends, and Latest. These options give users more control over whether they want a broad following feed, posts from friends, or the newest posts first.
More content can remain visible at once
Reports from the launch described expanded or side-by-side layouts. For example, comments could remain visible while a Reel stayed at a large size, reducing the need to switch repeatedly between the video and its discussion.

Is Instagram available on iPad now?
Yes. Instagram is distributed as a free app with in-app purchases through Apple’s App Store, and Apple lists iPad as a supported device.
For a current installation, use the requirement shown in the App Store listing: iPadOS 16.3 or later in the United States. Some articles published around the 2025 launch cited iPadOS 15.1 or later. That was a launch-era requirement and should not be treated as the current minimum.

What you need to install it
- An Apple iPad model supported by the App Store listing.
- iPadOS 16.3 or later, according to the current US listing.
- An Apple ID and enough available storage to download the free app.
- An internet connection for downloading and using Instagram’s online features.
If your iPad cannot update to iPadOS 16.3, the App Store may not offer the current version. Check your model’s software-update screen and the Instagram listing on your device before considering new hardware; owning a compatible iPad is not, by itself, a reason to replace it.
What Instagram said about the redesign
Instagram’s launch statement, as reproduced in contemporaneous coverage, said: “With Instagram for iPad, we’ve redesigned the experience to reflect how people use bigger screens today – for lean back entertainment.” The wording describes Instagram’s design rationale and is not an independent assessment of how people use the app.

Bottom line for iPad users
The September 2025 release is a genuine iPad-specific Instagram app, not simply the old phone layout stretched across a tablet. Its defining choices are a Reels-first start, Stories at the top, easier access to messaging, additional Following views and layouts that use the extra screen space. For current compatibility, follow Apple’s US listing and its iPadOS 16.3 minimum rather than the iPadOS 15.1 figure reported at launch.
