Yes—X now supports AI-generated Community Notes, but an AI system does not get to decide what the public sees. X documents two related mechanisms: enrolled AI Note Writers can submit proposed notes through an API, while its experimental Collaborative Notes feature generates a draft after a contributor requests one. In both cases, human contributors rate the note, and those ratings determine whether it is considered helpful enough to display.
The wording “X introduces an AI bot” refers to an evolving rollout rather than one single product launch. TechCrunch reported a pilot on July 1, 2025; X’s current guides describe the AI Note Writer API and Collaborative Notes as separate capabilities.
What X’s AI Community Notes actually do
An AI Note Writer is an AI contributor connected to X’s Community Notes system. It can find eligible candidate posts and submit proposed notes, but it cannot rate notes. X says AI writers must earn the ability to write, just as human contributors do, and can gain or lose that capability based on how helpful their contributions are.
After submission, regular Community Notes contributors provide the ratings. A note’s visibility depends on the community’s rating system, including agreement among contributors with different past rating patterns—not on an AI bot unilaterally publishing it.

How the two AI-assisted workflows differ

These are connected ideas, not interchangeable names for one bot. The AI Note Writers guide describes an API-based contributor, while the Collaborative Notes guide describes an in-product request-and-draft flow.
How an AI Note Writer submits a note
- Identify an eligible post. X says the initial candidate pool includes posts for which someone requested a note. The company expects that pool to expand.
- Generate a proposed explanation. The connected AI system writes the candidate note using the developer’s implementation.
- Submit through X’s API. The proposal enters Community Notes rather than appearing automatically as a public annotation.
- Undergo human rating. Regular contributors evaluate the note. The AI writer has no rating privilege.
- Earn or lose writing capability over time. X says an AI writer’s ability to write depends on helpfulness, so access is not a permanent guarantee.
This answers the practical question “Can an AI bot publish a Community Note automatically?” It can submit a proposal, but the documented design leaves the visibility decision to human raters.

What Collaborative Notes adds
Collaborative Notes starts with a contributor rather than an independently enrolled AI account. When a contributor selects “Request a Note,” X generates a draft. Contributors can then rate that draft and suggest improvements. X describes the feature as experimental, so labels, behavior and availability may change as feedback accumulates.

- An X account that is not already registered as a Community Notes contributor.
- A trusted-carrier verified phone number.
- A verified email address.
- An X API account with an app configured for read/write permissions.
- Enrollment in the AI Note Writer API.
- A connection between the API app and Community Notes.
There is also a data-use restriction. X says Community Notes API data may be processed solely for AI note writing and may not be used to train or fine-tune a foundation or frontier model. Developers should therefore treat the API permission as a narrowly scoped production capability, not as a general-purpose dataset license.
What the 2025 pilot report established—and what it did not
On July 1, 2025, Amanda Silberling reported in TechCrunch that X was piloting a program allowing AI chatbots to generate Community Notes. The report said AI submissions would receive the same vetting as human submissions and that a wider rollout depended on testing.
That report is useful rollout context, not proof that every capability was broadly available on that date or that the headline maps to one fixed launch. X’s later documentation is the better source for the current distinction between AI Note Writers and Collaborative Notes.

What early field evidence says about quality
A field study by Haiwen Li and Michiel A. Bakker evaluated one LLM-based writer over three months, from November 1, 2025, through January 31, 2026. The paper, published on arXiv on April 3, 2026, analyzed:
- 1,614 LLM-written notes on 1,597 posts;
- 1,332 human-written comparison notes on those same posts;
- 108,169 ratings from 42,521 raters.
The LLM notes received more positive individual ratings across rater-viewpoint groups. At the full note level, however, results were mixed: human notes more often reached “Currently Rated Helpful,” while LLM notes had fewer “Currently Rated Not Helpful” outcomes and similar average helpfulness scores.
When the researchers compared notes using raters who evaluated every note on a given post—reducing differences in exposure—the LLM notes had higher helpfulness scores. The authors caution that submission timing and which notes received ratings complicate direct comparisons. These results describe one implementation and deployment, not a guarantee that AI notes are more accurate or useful for every subject, model or prompt.

Why human ratings remain the key safeguard
Community Notes is designed around distributed human judgment. A generated note can be fluent yet incomplete, misinterpret a claim, miss context or confidently repeat an error. Requiring contributor ratings creates a second stage in which people with different prior rating histories must find a note useful before it is shown broadly.
That design also creates trade-offs. Human review can limit an AI system’s reach and slow publication, while uneven exposure can affect how the system’s quality appears in measurements. Conversely, keeping the rating decision outside the writing model prevents an AI contributor from both making and approving its own claims.
