SK hynix’s Optimized eSSD Virtualization Technology Explained

SK hynix’s eSSD virtualization puts part of multi-tenant I/O management in the SSD. Here is how PCIe multi-physical functions and ATS are intended to reduce hypervisor overhead, which PE9010 and PEB110 products use the technology, and why independent benchmarks are still needed.

SK hynix’s eSSD virtualization extends virtualization into the enterprise SSD: one drive can present I/O functions to multiple virtual machines and tenant workloads. The company says PCIe multi-physical-function support, Address Translation Service (ATS), firmware work and power-management techniques can reduce virtualization overhead and help keep service quality predictable. The cited material is company-authored or based on a company interview; it does not provide independent benchmarks, quantified savings or a named customer list.

What is eSSD virtualization?

Traditional virtualization divides server CPU, memory and other resources among virtual machines (VMs). Storage I/O still has to pass through the host and hypervisor, where requests are scheduled, translated and isolated. SK hynix describes eSSD virtualization as moving part of that work into an enterprise SSD so several VMs can share the device while retaining separate access paths and quality-of-service controls.

The target environment is a cloud or data-center system running mixed, multi-tenant workloads. AI and other data-intensive applications increase pressure on storage I/O as well as on host servers. In SK hynix’s account, an SSD that participates in I/O management can reduce work left to the hypervisor and make latency and throughput behavior more consistent when tenants compete for the same drive.

This is storage I/O virtualization for enterprise platforms, not software that runs virtual machines on a consumer PC.

How can an SSD help reduce hypervisor overhead?

PCIe multi-physical-function support

SK hynix identifies PCIe multi-physical-function support as a central mechanism. A PCIe device can expose multiple physical functions, allowing the platform to assign distinct interfaces or queues to different VMs or services. The company says this reduces the amount of mediation the hypervisor must perform when directing requests. The cited articles do not publish an architecture diagram, supported-function count or measured reduction in CPU utilization, so the benefit should be treated as a design intention rather than a quantified result.

Address Translation Service (ATS)

Virtualized devices must translate addresses between a VM’s view of memory and the host system’s physical addresses. ATS allows address-translation work to be requested from the platform’s translation structures instead of being repeated entirely in software. SK hynix presents ATS support as a way to offload translation overhead and shorten the path for I/O requests. Actual behavior depends on the processor, IOMMU, firmware, hypervisor and operating-system configuration.

Throttling and power behavior

The company also points to improved throttling and low-power characteristics. It says the design combines enterprise-SSD techniques for stabilizing performance with client-SSD experience in power efficiency. Throttling can help prevent one workload from consuming all available device resources; its usefulness must be assessed against the latency and throughput targets of the specific service.

What did SK hynix change during development?

SK hynix says its enterprise-SSD and client-SSD groups formed a cross-functional effort. Enterprise engineers contributed performance stabilization and optimization, while client-SSD engineers contributed power-efficiency experience. Design, verification and validation, and firmware personnel built an I/O-virtualization test environment that the company says it initially lacked.

The company also describes adapting firmware to customer requirements and increasing customer communication with Solidigm. Gijo Jeong, a technical leader in SSD design at SK hynix, summarized the engineering approach: “The key to success was our team’s flexibility and collaboration.” This is a company engineering perspective, not an independent assessment of product performance.

Which SK hynix SSDs use the technology?

SK hynix names the PE9010 and PEB110 as commercialized flagship enterprise SSDs equipped with its I/O-virtualization technology. The company says global technology companies operating cloud platforms adopted them, but the cited accounts do not identify those customers.

Neither account establishes current marketplace availability, pricing, a retail compatibility list or support for a particular hypervisor. A deployment decision therefore requires confirmation from SK hynix or the platform provider for the exact drive firmware, server, PCIe root complex, IOMMU, hypervisor and orchestration stack.

What benefits does SK hynix claim?

  • More predictable shared service: device-side functions and throttling are intended to keep mixed-tenant performance and quality of service more controlled.
  • Less host-side work: multi-physical-function PCIe support and ATS are intended to reduce hypervisor and address-translation overhead.
  • Potentially lower system expansion: SK hynix says device-side offload may help customers maintain service quality without adding systems.
  • Potentially lower cooling demand: the company links its low-power characteristics to possible cooling-cost reductions.
  • Isolation for multi-tenant use: separate device functions can support workload separation, but the security properties depend on the complete platform implementation.

These are vendor-reported outcomes. The cited sources contain no numerical performance uplift, energy-saving measurement, cooling-cost figure or independently verified comparison with a conventional enterprise SSD.

How should you evaluate an eSSD virtualization design?

Use the following checks when comparing this approach with another storage-virtualization implementation:

Evaluation area Questions to ask What the cited material establishes
I/O virtualization Does the SSD expose the functions, queues and provisioning model required by your hypervisor and orchestrator? SK hynix says its PE9010 and PEB110 include I/O-virtualization technology.
PCIe functions and ATS Do the server, IOMMU, firmware and hypervisor support multi-physical-function operation and ATS together? SK hynix identifies both mechanisms as ways to reduce software overhead; compatibility details are not stated.
QoS and latency How does the device behave under mixed read/write, burst and noisy-neighbor workloads? The company claims improved control and service quality, but publishes no workload results or latency figures in the cited accounts.
Isolation and security Are namespaces, functions, queues, resets and access controls isolated across tenants, including during faults and firmware updates? The articles frame shared multi-tenant operation as a goal but do not provide a security model or certification.
Power and thermals What are active, idle and throttled power limits in your chassis, and how do they affect sustained performance? SK hynix cites client-SSD power-efficiency expertise and possible cooling benefits; measured savings are not stated.
Firmware flexibility Can firmware policies be adapted to tenant requirements, and how are upgrades tested without disrupting workloads? The company says it adapted firmware to customer requirements.
Platform compatibility Are the exact drive firmware, PCIe generation, CPU, motherboard, hypervisor and guest drivers supported as a combination? No compatibility matrix appears in the cited sources.

Request vendor documentation and run representative tenant-mix tests before production. Useful measurements include host CPU consumed by storage I/O, tail latency per tenant, fairness under contention, reset and failover behavior, sustained power, and thermal throttling.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The SK hynix Newsroom account dated November 27, 2024, and the EE Times interview dated February 4, 2025, describe the development effort, mechanisms and claimed deployment benefits. They do not report a benchmark methodology, competitor comparison, percentage improvement, energy-saving amount, customer identity or independently reproduced result.

Accordingly, the strongest supported conclusion is that SK hynix has commercialized enterprise SSDs designed to participate in virtualized I/O, with PCIe multi-physical-function support and ATS positioned to reduce host-side overhead. Whether that translates into lower latency, fewer servers or lower cooling costs in a particular data center remains an implementation- and workload-dependent question that requires platform-specific testing.
