Silicon Catalyst’s £1.3 Million ChipStart UK Incubator: What It Is and How the Programme Evolved

ChipStart UK is a DSIT-backed semiconductor startup incubator delivered by SiliconCatalyst.UK. Here is what the £1.3 million pilot funded, how cohorts changed and what results the operator reports through March 2026.

ChipStart UK is a government-backed incubator for early-stage semiconductor-design companies. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announced it in October 2023 as a two-year pilot with £1.3 million in funding, delivered by SiliconCatalyst.UK. The pilot’s original nine-month cohort model has since been extended: SiliconCatalyst.UK reported 12-month terms for cohort three and for cohort four, which launched on 19 March 2026.

What ChipStart UK does

The programme is aimed at young companies working on semiconductor design rather than at consumer electronics buyers. DSIT said the first cohort included startups developing technologies for areas such as healthcare, artificial intelligence and data-centre energy efficiency.

Who launched and runs the incubator?

DSIT provided the pilot backing, while SiliconCatalyst.UK delivered the programme. SiliconCatalyst.UK is the operator responsible for cohort announcements, applications and reported outcomes. The £1.3 million figure refers to the original two-year pilot announcement in 2023; it should not be read as a newly announced 2026 budget.

How the cohorts changed over time

Programme point Published details What the figure means
Initial pilot and first cohort (October 2023) £1.3 million; two-year pilot; 12 companies selected from 27 applications DSIT’s launch announcement and first-cohort selection
Second cohort (announcement 22 February 2024) Nine-month cohort beginning 1 June 2024; applications closed 19 April 2024; applicants had to have raised less than £1 million privately Historical application dates and threshold for that round, not a permanent eligibility rule
Cohort three (announcement 27 March 2025) 12-month programme; 10 companies, according to DSIT’s 2024–25 annual report A later format change from the nine-month model
Cohort four (operator report, 19 March 2026) 11 companies selected from 42 applications for a fully funded 12-month programme SiliconCatalyst.UK’s latest reported cohort information

How the first cohort was selected

DSIT said 27 companies applied for the first cohort and 12 were chosen after two rounds of panel interviews. The announcement framed the offer as a combination of technical infrastructure, business support and financing connections rather than a cash grant to each startup.

What is known about fundraising results

Fundraising totals are reported programme outcomes, not proof that ChipStart UK alone caused the investments. On 27 March 2025, SiliconCatalyst.UK said the first two cohorts had raised more than £45 million in private venture-capital and angel funding. DSIT’s 2024–25 annual report described private investment raised by those cohorts as over £40 million. The amounts differ because they come from separate publications and should remain attributed to their respective sources.

For the latest reported update, SiliconCatalyst.UK said in March 2026 that alumni from cohorts one through three had raised close to $100 million in equity funding. That is an operator-reported cumulative figure, covering a different set of cohorts and currency from the 2025 statements.

What “fully funded” means in the latest report

SiliconCatalyst.UK described cohort four as a fully funded 12-month programme. The available announcement does not establish that every cost a participating company might incur is covered, nor does it publish a universal cash award. Applicants should rely on the current programme and application materials for the exact support package.

Who the programme is for

ChipStart UK is most relevant to an early-stage company whose core work involves semiconductor design and that needs access to specialised tools, IP, prototyping, commercial expertise or investor networks. The published eligibility details have changed by application round: for example, the second-cohort call used a less-than-£1-million private-funding threshold. That historical limit should not be assumed to apply to cohort four or future intakes.
