A five-minute setup for an AI coding agent is possible on paper, and some projects now publish one. But “five minutes” usually measures a narrow finish line: a command-line tool installed, project configuration written, a health check passed, and perhaps one small task completed. Whether that finish line matches your machine, your repository, and your tolerance for changes you did not write depends on details that a headline leaves out.
What a first-run setup should include
The documented examples share a common shape. A first run is more than downloading a tool. It has four stages:
- Install the command-line tool that the agent or setup flow runs from.
- Add project-level agent configuration so the agent knows the repository’s conventions and instructions.
- Run a health check that confirms the configuration loads and the tool can see the project.
- Try one small task in the real codebase, so you can see the agent do actual work before trusting it with more.
If a guide stops after step one, it has not finished the job. If it stops after step three, you have verified the installation but not the agent’s behavior in your code.
Files a setup will write into your repository
Setup flows that persist configuration write files into the repository itself. Before you run one, know what it will create or change. The reviewed sources name these:

- AGENTS.md, an instructions file. Agent OS documents adding it as part of its installation.
- Hooks and workflow files, which control automated steps around agent actions. Agent OS also documents adding these.
- Local project configuration from the initialization step in the 0dai flow. The reviewed page does not list every file name, so check the diff rather than relying on a summary.
- Agent wiring for supported agents in universal-agentic-setup. The reviewed page does not list the exact files for each agent.
Commit or stash your current work first. Then run git status after setup and read every new or modified file before you commit it.

The three projects below publish different levels of detail. “Not stated” in the table means the reviewed page does not say; it does not mean the feature is absent.

How to read the five-minute claims
- 0dai presents a five-minute sequence on its page. It is a vendor statement about its own flow.
- Agent OS gives five minutes for a new-project install and two to five minutes for the autonomous existing-repository setup, which it says depends on network conditions. These are the project’s estimates.
- universal-agentic-setup does not publish a duration in the reviewed page.
No independent timing has been published for any of these projects. Treat each figure as the publisher’s own. Your clock will depend on download speed, whether you need to create accounts or tokens, and whether the required runtime is already installed, none of which the pages measure for you.
Prerequisites and side effects to check first
- GitHub access. The Agent OS autonomous flow for an existing repository can require GitHub credentials and permissions. It can also create a branch and a pull request. Branch-protection settings may require someone with admin rights, and the project names cases where a human still has to act.
- Network. Check whether the step you are running needs a connection. The 0dai local initialization does not, but its network features need an optional activation.
- Version. Confirm that the version you installed matches the version of the documentation you followed. The 0dai page identifies v4.6.1.
- Operating system and shell. The reviewed pages do not establish supported operating systems for every flow. Read the README before running a shell script.
- Existing files. Check whether AGENTS.md, hook, or workflow files already exist in the repository before applying anything, and keep your own version under version control so you can compare.
Configuring one repository for several coding agents
A repository used by more than one agent needs one set of instructions that each agent can read, rather than a separate copy for each tool. The universal-agentic-setup project describes an agent-neutral sync command for this purpose, and it distinguishes agents it can wire automatically from agents that receive printed instructions. A practical sequence looks like this:

- Not including the Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB), the Crowpi advanced version comes with the Raspberry Pi 5
- ELECROW Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5, CrowPi is equipped with a 9-inch HD touchscreen along with a camera; All the regular components used in DIY electronics are packed into the CrowPi development board, such as LCD, LED matrix, buzzer, light sensor, PIR sensor, ultrasonic sensor, IR sensor, etc
- Raspberry Pi Sensors: The Crowpi raspberry pi 5 programming kit is jam-packed with lots of buttons such as 19 different sensors in a tidy easy to use package; You don't have to wait and wire things
- Build Quality: Solid ABS shell and well made components in one place make it strong and convenient to travel
- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
- Choose one shared instruction file as the source of truth. AGENTS.md is the name Agent OS documents, so it is a sensible starting point.
- Run the sync or setup command in its preview mode first, because the project’s default is dry-run.
- Read the proposed changes and apply them only after they match what you expect.
- Run the same small task with each agent, so differences in behavior show up early.
- Record which agents were wired automatically and which need manual steps. For the eight agents in the printed-instruction group, the manual steps are yours to complete.
Why the WordPress phrase is a useful model, with limits
The name “Famous 5-Minute Install” comes from WordPress’s installation wording, and it is a useful precedent. It promises one clear path, few decisions, and a visible result at the end. That is the standard agentic tooling should aim for.
The comparison has limits. WordPress installs a self-contained application. An agent setup changes a repository, may touch hosted accounts and permissions, and depends on which agents you run. The phrase is a naming model, not a description of how current WordPress installs work; for those steps, use WordPress’s own documentation.

A genuinely famous install for agentic development would show its file list before writing anything, state its prerequisites, define “done,” and make its changes reversible. Among the three projects reviewed, universal-agentic-setup comes closest on preview and reversibility, Agent OS is the most explicit about credentials and repository side effects, and 0dai is the most specific about its local-first initialization and its finish sequence. None of them yet offers all of those at once, which is the gap the title points to.
