Wireless audio is sent through one of five Bluetooth codecs that Sony documents, and LDAC is the highest-quality option for high-resolution listening. LDAC is still a compressed codec, so it improves the wireless path without making it bit-for-bit lossless. A wired connection through the headphones’ stereo mini jack is the other route, though Sony’s documentation does not establish that its analog path is bit-perfect. Getting the best result depends on the playing device as much as on the headphones.
Why a lossless file does not mean a lossless Bluetooth link
Audio passes through several stages before it reaches your ears. A lossless file or streaming service supplies the source. The phone, computer or player decodes that file, then encodes it with a Bluetooth codec for wireless transmission. The WH-1000XM3 decodes the codec stream and plays it. Each stage can narrow what the next one receives, and the codec is the stage that determines what travels over the air.

That is why a lossless source is necessary for the best possible wireless playback but not sufficient for lossless wireless playback. The headphones cannot override the source device’s choice of codec. If the phone does not support LDAC, or does not negotiate it for the current connection, the headphones will fall back to a codec both devices share.
The five Bluetooth codecs Sony lists
Sony’s WH-1000XM3 Help Guide lists five codecs for music playback over an A2DP connection. The table below shows what Sony’s documentation states for each one. Where Sony’s cited material gives no figure, the table says so instead of filling in a value from another source.
#1 Best Overall
- HD Noise-Canceling Processor QN1
- Smart Listening by Adaptive Sound Control / SENSE ENGINE for virtual surround sound
- Hi-Res audio / 1. 57" LCP drivers for up to 40kHz frequency
- Bluetooth 4. 1 LDAC connection / Connect to the Sony Headphones Connect App
| Codec | Listed by Sony for A2DP music playback | Detail stated in Sony’s cited material |
|---|---|---|
| SBC | Yes | Bitrate and sampling detail not stated in the codec guide or US specifications. |
| AAC | Yes | Bitrate and sampling detail not stated in the codec guide or US specifications. |
| aptX | Yes | Bitrate and sampling detail not stated in the codec guide or US specifications. |
| aptX HD | Yes | Bitrate and sampling detail not stated in the codec guide or US specifications. |
| LDAC | Yes | Described by Sony as enabling Hi-Res Audio transmission over Bluetooth. Sony’s US specifications list a 20 Hz–40,000 Hz frequency response with LDAC at 96 kHz sampling and 990 kbps. |
The codec list is documented in Sony’s WH-1000XM3 Help Guide: Supported codecs. The frequency-response and bitrate figures come from Sony’s WH-1000XM3 specifications page for the US market.
What LDAC does, and what it does not prove
Sony’s help guide describes LDAC as “an audio coding technology developed by Sony that enables the transmission of High-Resolution (Hi-Res) Audio content, even over a Bluetooth connection.” That is the strongest claim Sony makes for the codec, and it is a claim about higher-resolution transmission, not about bit-perfect reproduction.

- DIGITAL NOISE CANCELING: Industry leading ANC lends a personalized, virtually soundproof experience
- PHONE CALL: A built-in mic enables you to take hands-free calls.
- VOICE ASSISTANT: Alexa enabled for voice access to music, information and more. Activate with a simple touch
- QUICK ATTENTION MODE: Cover the right ear cup to turn down your music for instant, easy conversation
- PERSONAL NOISE CANCELLING: Adjusts ambient sound to your activity for the best noise cancellation
Two points keep the figures in proportion:
- The 40,000 Hz upper limit is a frequency-response specification. Sony lists 20 Hz–20,000 Hz for the standard Bluetooth response at 44.1 kHz sampling, and 20 Hz–40,000 Hz with LDAC at 96 kHz sampling and 990 kbps. It describes what the connection condition is stated to support. It does not show that the transmitted signal is identical to the source file.
- LDAC needs cooperation from the source. Sony notes that depending on the connected device, settings may be needed to use a higher-quality codec instead of SBC. The phone or player must support LDAC and negotiate it for the connection. Without that, the headphones will not use it, whatever the headphones themselves support.
Choosing the connection priority
The WH-1000XM3 offers two modes that trade off sound quality against connection reliability. Sony documents them as “Priority on sound quality” and “Priority on stable connection,” selectable in the Sony Headphones Connect app.
- Confirm that the playing device supports LDAC, aptX HD, aptX or AAC, and check its own Bluetooth audio settings for a higher-quality codec option if one is offered.
- Pair the WH-1000XM3 with the device and start playback from a lossless or high-resolution source.
- Open the Sony Headphones Connect app and select “Priority on sound quality” for a compatible AAC, aptX, aptX HD or LDAC source.
- If audio breaks up, especially at a distance or in a crowded radio environment, switch to “Priority on stable connection.” Sony says stability can suffer in challenging conditions when sound-quality priority is active.
Sony also notes that playback time can shorten depending on the quality setting and conditions of use. Expect shorter battery life when you run the higher-quality mode continuously, and monitor it if you rely on long listening sessions.

Wired listening as an alternative
The WH-1000XM3 supports wired listening. Sony specifies a stereo mini jack, a detachable cable and passive operation, and includes a headphone cable in the box. A wired connection bypasses the Bluetooth codec entirely, which makes it the only route on this model that avoids Bluetooth compression.
Sony’s documentation, however, does not describe the internal signal path of the analog connection or certify bit-perfect output. The jack and cable establish that wired playback is possible. They do not establish that every wired chain delivers a lossless signal to your ears, because the source device’s output, the cable and the headphones’ amplification all contribute to the result.

- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
If the cable is damaged or missing, a compatible stereo mini cable can restore wired use. A replacement cable affects only the wired connection. It does not change what the Bluetooth link can carry.

- No independent listening test or measurement in the reviewed material shows a specific audible improvement from LDAC on the WH-1000XM3. Any figure for how much better it sounds would be unsupported.
- Sony does not claim that its Bluetooth link is lossless. Its own wording is that LDAC enables Hi-Res Audio transmission, which is a narrower claim.
- Sony’s documentation does not say whether the analog wired path is bit-perfect. Treat the wired option as a supported connection rather than a guaranteed lossless one.
In practical terms, the strongest reliable setup is a lossless source, a playing device that supports and negotiates LDAC, and the sound-quality mode in the Sony Headphones Connect app. For the highest fidelity the model’s specifications allow, a wired connection is the option that avoids the Bluetooth codec, though Sony does not certify that path as bit-perfect.
