Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ask when the user can see the value of notifications—not automatically on the first launch. Android’s official guidance gives the third or fourth app launch as an example of waiting until people know the app, but it does not prove that session three is universally best or produces a specific opt-in increase. On iOS, the first explicit authorization request is decisive: the system records the response and does not show the same prompt again.
Why wait until the benefit is clear?
A permission dialog interrupts the user before they know what they are agreeing to. A better trigger is a relevant action: for example, tapping an alert bell, following someone, scheduling a reminder, or submitting an order. At that point, explain what the notifications will do and let the user choose.
Android Developers says an app may wait until the third or fourth launch to give people time to become familiar with it. Treat that as an example of delayed timing—not a proven conversion rule. The right moment depends on when your app first makes notifications useful.
How Android permission timing works
Apps targeting Android 13 or later
For apps targeting Android 13 or later, the app controls when to display the notification permission dialog. Newly installed apps on Android 13 and later have notifications turned off by default until permission is granted. Use that control to ask in context, rather than showing the system dialog without explanation. See Android Developers’ notification runtime permission guidance.

Apps targeting Android 12L or lower
The flow differs for apps targeting Android 12L (API level 32) or lower. The system ties the permission prompt to notification-channel creation and activity startup, so it may appear around app startup rather than at a moment chosen by the user. Android’s guidance and the Android Open Source Project’s opt-in notification documentation describe distinct fresh-install, upgrade, and target-SDK cases; do not treat all Android devices as following one launch-time rule.
How to handle the first request on iOS
Ask in context
Apple recommends requesting authorization when the user understands why notifications are relevant. Its example is a task-tracking app asking after someone schedules a first task. The first explicit request prompts the user and records the decision. A later authorization request does not display the prompt again, so avoid spending that one opportunity before the benefit is clear. See Apple’s notification permission guidance.

Consider provisional authorization
For supported notification flows, provisional authorization lets an app deliver notifications quietly to Notification Center before the user makes an explicit keep-or-turn-off choice. If the user keeps them, they remain quiet unless the user changes notification settings. Check the current authorization and notification settings because people can change them at any time.
React Native’s PushNotificationIOS API exposes iOS permission requests for alerts, badges, and sounds. It is an iOS API surface, not a way to bypass Apple’s authorization behavior or a shared cross-platform timing strategy.

Watch notification-channel timing when using Firebase
Firebase documents an Android edge case: if the first notification channel is created while the app is in the background—including when the Firebase Cloud Messaging SDK receives a message—the notification may not display, and the permission prompt may wait until the app is opened again. Check when your app or SDK creates its first channel and test the foreground and background flows. See Firebase’s Android Cloud Messaging setup guidance.

Official platform guidance establishes that delayed, contextual requests are possible; it does not establish a quantified opt-in advantage for asking on session three. Evaluate the flow with your own users and the value of the messages you send.

- Track permission acceptance by the in-app moment that triggered the request, not just by launch number.
- Measure downstream engagement and whether notifications deliver the intended value; a grant alone is not success.
- For iOS, account for the fact that the explicit system prompt is not shown again after the initial decision.
- Test Android separately by target SDK and install or upgrade path, including notification-channel creation timing.
Use the third or fourth launch as a starting hypothesis only if users need that much time to understand the app. If a clear, user-initiated action establishes the benefit sooner, ask there instead.
